He played well under Tuchel, I think it was Fraudball under Potter he was talking about.

Back to goal? I think the one who play him as st was TT. His first start with us he was playing as st with Mount and kai as Out n out wingers.

Where has it been stated he was going through the motions and since he has been here and not trying?

Oh - so you think he has actually been trying during the sh*tshow we saw last year? That would probably be even worse!

Poch has him playing between the channels far better than he had under Potter. Receiving the ball in far greater areas and on the turn too. No more of his back facing the goal.

Makes the Potter wingback experiment looking like a Class A Felony

I am not sure as a wb you get the ball a lot with back to goal. You mostly get those playing st.

Winger and wb in offensive phase play almost similar role. The biggest difference is during defensive phase, wb have to defend the box.

It is very difficult for Sterling to do all this mazy run playing as wb because when we lose the ball he need to sprint 80 m back to defend the box.

Did he really say this?

If he did, this is one of the problem of TT perfect football.

He played like 3 games for Tuchel. Obviously he was burnt out by Potter’s merry go round formations, pretty much the whole team phoned it in last season

He said back to goal. Sterling was playing false 9 mostly for Potter

He said a lot of things including playing with his back to goal but you chose to zero in on “playing with back to goal”. He played back to goal for 2-3 games, under Potter his performances were far worse including being asked to play at wingback. It’s pretty clear he started losing motivation when Tuchel left.

You can’t determine if he was trying or not no one outside of Sterling can confirm that. To just assume he wasn’t trying is laughable.

Entire operation last season was a sh*t show.

Absolutely. Such is the folly of internet availability to all.

Except when at wing back.

In one of threads on here I was discussing this with @OriginalS. I went back and checked all the team starting lineups and formations that Potter used in his time as manager. From memory Sterling was used as a wing-back twice, maybe three times. It wasn't a regular thing. RLC played wing-back far more when James was injured. Someone had to!

CHO was shifted from left winger to right back by Tuchel, yet that doesnt seem to be mentioned very often for some reason.

I don't remember many times last season when he fronted up the defender and tried to take him on - running at his man.

We have already seen him try to do that more times this season than he did in the whole of last season.

Defend him all you wAnt, but IF he was "trying" last season - then I would hate to see him if he ever downed tools.

He literally stated he was playing in a different role the managers asked him to do something different last season to play with his back to goal.  Even in the Liverpool game at the start in was in the pocket. He said he asked Poch to move him wide and since that moment he’s ripped both teams apart West Ham and Luton 🙄🙄

He did quite well under Tuchel in his first few games to be fair.

It may well be the case that he was playing a different role. However, I refuse to believe that all 4 managers last season banned sterling from being able to take on a player.

Not saying this is what he did but Raheem did play like he couldn't give a f**k last season, early in the season it looked like he was the only light in the darkness, afterwards, completely different.

It's not as if he was the only one mind, it's just I understand why Boehly singled him out. He was a big signing with a lot of PL experience. Raheems been playing consistently from a young age where he's basically as experienced as many 30 year old PL players. So it was disappointing to say the least, and I can't say I was expecting anything great from him this season either but so far he is proving me wrong and I'm happy about that. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Yes he did. But nowhere near the type of performances he has delivered against West Ham and Luton.

Obviously we are getting some posters saying they ALWAYS knew he would come good, and those of us who were vocal in saying we didn't think he was the player he once was have egg on our faces. OK fair enough, footballs a game of opinions, but many of them weren't saying that every week last season. Why? Because he didn't play well and he has admitted that himself. Some of it can be dumped at Potter's door, Lampard's door, weak players around him etc. But some of it also is down to him.

Anyway, personally, truly I never mind when I'm wrong on a player. Because if they do turn it round and start delivering consistently, it benefits Chelsea. And that's what we have had from Sterling in the last two games. Long may it continue.

PS. On the subject of opinions and wingers, when we were in for Antony Gordon the other season, several of Sterling's backers on here were quickly ridiculing the very few of us who thought he had the talent and it could be a good move. I wonder what they think now watching how he is playing for Newcastle?

Excellent post @just. My sentiments exactly. I couldn't be happier that Sterling is currently proving me wrong. Long may it continue.  All the time he is at Chelsea and wants to be here and plays like he has been he is adding to the benefit of the team. I'm all for that.

So which players played like they wanted to be here last season, which players showed up?

I would be keen to know.

I'm not sure if this is aimed at me? If it is I've never even entertained the thought that Sterling didn't want to be here. My own view is, with a couple of exceptions, he didn't play well last season, despite being one of the most experienced players we had. I also don't think he was playing well at the end of his time with City.

Who mostly played well last season? Well, Silva for sure. Badashile, Kante every match when he was fit, Hall when he got games, Madueke when Frank threw him in. Enzo and Chalobah also had more good games than bad ones IMO.

Did you think Sterling played well overall? Do you think no players had more good games than bad ones?

Good question. If Sterling phoned it in (top scorer and top assister) then everyone else did too.

Personally I think Sterling was a easy scapegoat and many that wanted Potter initially projected his faults ontu Sterling, Tuchel and the other new signings. They couldn't excactly be overly critical of Potter two months into his tenure as they were dying for us to hire him in the first place so they had a go at specific players instead.
