This guy would keep a fully fit chilly out the side would he? didnt want to be number two so has gone to Germany. good luck to him

Think he'd have been more than happy being number 2 this season. The problem was he was number 4 or 5 behind Chilly, Colwill, Cucurella and Gusto when opportunities arose.

We need to remember that the Bundesliga and Premier League are very different. Bundesliga teams play open with a high line, it suits Maatsen perfectly. It's very similar to the reasons why Sancho didn't work out in the Premier League. Some players are more suited to different leagues, this has always been the case in football. I would have liked to see more of Maatsen in a different system though, he was never going to work in our sh*te system.

Plus the BL has none of the speed, physicality or intensity of the PL. I've watched Maatsen's games, very little defensive pressure, it's basically Burnley Mk 2. He has found his level. Good on him. No egg on face. None. Zip.

Did he even get a chance to play LB for us?

This is the problem - you've already written him off.

Tbf whether you think Maatsen was sh*te or you don't, this is good for us. Because he's still got two years left on his contract, if we want to sell him we can now get a decent fee. I'm sure Dortmund would happily buy him if he keeps this up. Orrrr he could find himself back here rotating with Chilwell.

Win bloody win I say. I never liked the look of Maatsen on the wing, no idea why Poch kept playing him there, I also bought into the narrative that he must be horrendous defensively, but his form at Dortmund is making me think otherwise.

Because Levi was never good at LB, neither is Cucu, so Maatsen should've got a chance there.

Totally agree with everything you said there.

Maatsen is a means to an end in compling with FFP in my opinion.

Same as Chalobah, Broja, Gallagher and maybe other like Gilchrist, Matos, Hutchinson etc.

Aye, can't see anything other than Maatsen being sold. Gilchrist, Matos and others will be with us for another year or two so they get more games, more exposure, and an increased selling price.

Actually I'm arguing for context. It's all very well posting reviews of his game and stats. Key is the standard of the oppo, and, in the BL, it's way below Prem level. The CL, if they get there, will be the test.

Ian Maatsen wins Bundesliga rookie of the month...

https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/vote-rookie-of-the-month-award-2023-24-best-young-player-sorare-24683

Winner  Ian Maatsen (Borussia Dortmund)  January was a whirlwind month for Maatsen. Within 24 hours of joining Borussia Dortmund on loan from Chelsea, the 21-year-old was handed his Bundesliga debut. Stepping in to fill the void left by Ramy Bensebaini – away with Algeria on Africa Cup of Nations duty – he has made an immediate impact. Maatsen was one of three players, along with Marcel Sabitzer and Thomas Meunier, to start all three of BVB’s fixtures in January. The left-back averaged 88 touches per 90 minutes, found a mark with 89 percent of his attempted passes, fired off two attempts on goal and laid on three shots for his new teammates. He even produced an assist on just his second Bundesliga outing, teeing up countryman Donyell Malen with a superb cross-field pass.  Defensively sound with an attack-minded disposition, Maatsen is the best of both worlds, often moving from the left-hand side into a central role. “His abilities are reminiscent of Raphaël Guerreiro, who was always moving between No.6 and 8 positions. It’s a lot of fun to watch him deliver across the board,” said Dortmund head coach Edin Terzić of Maatsen’s versatility. The energetic all-rounder’s arrival has coincided with something of a resurgence at BVB, who are the only team that won all three of their Bundesliga fixtures in January, scoring a league-leading nine goals and conceding just once. Their new flying Dutchman has been everywhere, putting in 11.6 kilometres and 33 sprints per game, whilst reaching a top speed of 21.6 mph (35.1 km/h). Only Alphonso Davies and Justin Njinmah were faster in January.
