Hang in there, fella.

Lol, I'm just posting an update on how he's doing. Whether he returns to us or it increases his transfer fee it's all good.

Feels like some on here want the kid to fail just so they can say "I told you so". He's a Chelsea player after all, we should be getting behind him.

Ian Maatsen wins Bundesliga rookie of the month...

https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/vote-rookie-of-the-month-award-2023-24-best-young-player-sorare-24683

Winner  Ian Maatsen (Borussia Dortmund)  January was a whirlwind month for Maatsen. Within 24 hours of joining Borussia Dortmund on loan from Chelsea, the 21-year-old was handed his Bundesliga debut. Stepping in to fill the void left by Ramy Bensebaini – away with Algeria on Africa Cup of Nations duty – he has made an immediate impact. Maatsen was one of three players, along with Marcel Sabitzer and Thomas Meunier, to start all three of BVB’s fixtures in January. The left-back averaged 88 touches per 90 minutes, found a mark with 89 percent of his attempted passes, fired off two attempts on goal and laid on three shots for his new teammates. He even produced an assist on just his second Bundesliga outing, teeing up countryman Donyell Malen with a superb cross-field pass.  Defensively sound with an attack-minded disposition, Maatsen is the best of both worlds, often moving from the left-hand side into a central role. “His abilities are reminiscent of Raphaël Guerreiro, who was always moving between No.6 and 8 positions. It’s a lot of fun to watch him deliver across the board,” said Dortmund head coach Edin Terzić of Maatsen’s versatility. The energetic all-rounder’s arrival has coincided with something of a resurgence at BVB, who are the only team that won all three of their Bundesliga fixtures in January, scoring a league-leading nine goals and conceding just once. Their new flying Dutchman has been everywhere, putting in 11.6 kilometres and 33 sprints per game, whilst reaching a top speed of 21.6 mph (35.1 km/h). Only Alphonso Davies and Justin Njinmah were faster in January.

But i was told teams can't defend with someone like Maatsen being such a liability at full back. You mean teams can simply dominate possession/games with Maatsen in defence? hmmm....

100%

I fully understand why we didn't play him as LB. Physically he just didn't seem to be at it. And who knows how he performed in training other than Poch.

But he's an academy player, who was given a great route out and an opportunity to leave in a positive sense.

If I'm at Chelsea and talking to a prospective 16yo debating whether to sign pro terms with us Maatsen is another perfect example of why they should sign. They'll get the opportunity to go first team here and if not they can move away to the right club, and typically a big club. Dortmund, Roma, Milan.

Imagine if Maatsen was signed for Brighton. Maybe he'd be a star for them, and then what? He'd be stuck there until a big club put up a silly amount of money. And if he flopped, where is he going other than a championship level club?

Could just circle back at the end of the season. Under Poch he has no future here and whilst I don't believe he'd be an all around great LB, I'd be interested to see if the potential new manager has any use for him whether at LWB, LW, or CAM.

If Dortmund trigger his release clause he'd be their most expensive signing.

I'm fascinated by what happens if Dortmund don't want to spend the money but let's say, Man United did.

Could Dortmund sign him to sell him instantly. Maybe there's a clause preventing that.

Because of FFP, I think he will be sold regardless.

Under Poch no.

But what about under RDZ? And how would thar affect Conor?

Struggled against PSV in the CL the other night. Left Bakayoko in acres of space, only Bakayoko's shooting incompetence saved one certain goal and another one slightly more difficult. Caught ball watching , too easily forced off the ball, made life difficult for himself with a first-half YC for bringing down a player who got past him too easily. As always, looked so much more comfortable forward. PSV are a decent team, better than Dortmund on the night, should have won.

Are you saying that he is better of playing further forward more as an attacker than a defender? 😱😱😱

As opposed to constantly ridiculing a certain Italian midfielder that genuinely helped us win 2 European trophies and the club world cup.

twerking for a rival player is crazy

Couple of mediocre games for Maatsen. Should be noted the other Dortmund defenders rated between 3-5.

You are always going to see ups and downs due to age/inexperience

Good that he is getting the minutes all the same. He is probably learning more from the tough games vs the easy ones.
