Learn the language and it should go well.

I went there for six weeks in the 90s and had a good time. 

Like anywhere if you make a go of the language you are more accepted.

Agree strider. Learning the language, (even if it is just the basics), helps wherever you base yourself. I do make the effort. We have had a place out there since 2013 and as years have passed by, we have spent more and more time out there. Nowhere is perfect, Spain included. But our lifestyle out there is totally different, and I have to say, far more enjoyable than the UK. We are aware we are reaching a time in our lives where we probably only have a few laps of the track left, and so we are excited to be starting a new chapter in our lives in a place we love.
