Robert Sanchez joins Chelsea

I honestly don’t get it.

Some people are making out if we cut out the playing out of the back risks we’ve got a wonderful keeper.

His is an average shot stopper IMO,a very bad decision maker (think of corners we concede where despite being 6ft 6 inches and able to use his hands he looks like a lost little lamb) and he also has conceded soft goals similar to PSG’s 5th goal.

A top goalkeeper can turn possible defeats into lucky wins, I’ve never had that feeling about Sanchez because he isn’t a top goalkeeper.

He isn’t in the same ballpark as the Arsenal, Man City or Liverpool number ones.

I could go on and add Crystal Palace, Brentford etc…

Sanchez will come back in and within 2 matches he’ll do something that will make this thread blow up.

Maybe he had your vote but he never had mine.

I agree, this season he has been better but he is still not a keeper you can truly rely on. Too many rushes of blood, flaps at corners and his passing out is as bad, if not worse than Jorgensen's. I don't want to see either of them in the squad when we go into next season as otherwise you just know we will be having exactly the same discussions again. WE NEED BETTER.

I agree with the overall point that we need better.

We don't have better at the moment so while we are waiting for the summer, it makes prudent sense to stick with the keeper that has shown he can make quality saves that can make up for the bozo moments you get instead of one that has zero upsides.

Did you not watch him under Maresca this season?

He's a great keeper when focusing solely on stopping shots.

I'm assuming that's a joke to be fair.

Yes I did watch him under Maresca.

Great keeper?? Not for me

You can’t even just solely focus on stopping shots, there’s decision making in situations like away at Man Utd in the first few minutes or knowing how to deal with corners and he is poor in both of these aspects. There will also be times he will still have to kick the ball regardless of if we scrapped the keeper sweeper business.

Goalkeeping is much more than shot stopping, we can’t just let the other areas of his goalkeeping slide.

He is not good enough if we ever want to win big trophies again.

A quick example…

Similar situations:

1 - Jarrod Bowen curls a dangerous ball into our box - it ends up as a goal (Sanchez was in goal BTW)

2 - Garnarcho curls a similarly dangerous ball into to box against Arsenal - Raya saves it

My point here is there’s level to goalkeepers and Raya’s reactions are sharper than Sanchez’s and these marginal differences is what separates the average from the best. If we want to dine at the top table again it’s things like this we need to address.

He is far from being a top goalkeeper and it’s not just to do with being asked to be a keeper sweeper.

If you watch the Bowen goal there was an attacker right in front him if he doesn’t anticipate that the attacker gets the ball and he does and scores he will get called out for that. There was nothing he can do about that goal defenders need to do more there.

Sanchez just focusing on being a keeper is one of the best in Europe. Playing out from the back he’s is probably in the top 5 worst keepers for that.

When he does that it also affects his performance in other areas Maresca found that out the hard way and so will Liam

If you watch the Garnarcho one Pedro was right in front of Raya trying to get a touch - very similar scenario with 2 different outcomes.

Sanchez is definitely not one of the best in Europe - how can he be? He’s not even one of the best in the EPL.

He will still have brain fart moments whatever the manager asks or doesn’t ask him to do.

@GarnachoCheese yeah was a joke, I do think he's better than a lot of keepers though we could have instead.

And I definitely think if he was in goal last night we wouldn't have lost 5-2

But I also think if Rosenior didn't decide to bring on Delap, we also wouldn't have lost 5-2. Those two decisions hurt us badly and stem from two ideas that are just thick;

1. Sanchez hasn't been great at playing it short, so lets give the other guy a chance. Momumentally thick decision considering the other keeper has always shown himself to be just as bad and is not as good at stopping shots.

2. Delap is a big lumbering oaf so he must be good at holding up the play when we want to see out a game. When this might be one of the worst aspects of his game

Ah im so frustrated. We had a chance to win that game 3 or 4-2 with some smarter decisions by the manager. It happens rarely we see a major f**k up at such a level from the manager which causes a loss, we've had it happen twice - Maresca vs United and last night.

Going to be funny when in exactly 12 months from now we are still going to be saying, we need a GK, we need a CB, we need a LW, etc.

Nothing, and I mean nothing will be addressed. We all deep down know it.

Quite staggering that the people running this club are so stubborn, so blind, and so stupid ...

It’s the hope that kills you.

The people running the club - the owners - know feck all about football. They have zip experience of the game. Fair enough. Their appointed experts - the Bobsy Twins - have pulled the wool over the owners' eyes.

We need a new keeper simple as that but for now Sanchez is the better of the 2 so play him with instructions to not f**k about with it at the back. Even Maresca had finally come to that conclusion.

They won’t sign a new keeper though, they will bring in Penders and get him as sweeper keeper and to bait the press and what other bo**ocks is on trend and wind up ruining his career when all you need to do is make saves, communicate with your back 4 and command your area.

If anything I feel the back pass rule has slowed the game down, I remember when keepers used to throw it out on the counter attack. Some keepers had great distribution with throws.

  • 2 weeks later...

Making him play with the ball at his feet I feel just kills his and the backlines confidence in every other area. If he was to focus on making saves then he would be a better shot stopper. I don't know what to think anymore tbh.

Sanchez has never been good enough for Brighton, never mind us. The mistakes yesterday weren’t from playing out, they were from being sh*t. Taking three touches so casually when Beto was right next to him is his own stupidness, luckily Caicedo mopped that one up. That just set a precedent for the day.

Sadly next season will be Penders so no chance of getting a serious gk any time soon.

I literally hate the guy. He’s so sh*te it beggars belief

Make that two haters.

Be glad to see the back of him and his annoying gormless expression (the one he uses for every occasion!)

Apparently some of the players have said Shaky Bob was dis-draught in the dressing after the game. He sat on his own, away from everybody, and went to put his head in his hands. But he dropped it.

Do you remember the Gary Sprake jokes in the 70's?
