In view of:
1. England's proud tradition of folding against Germany (preferably after penalties)

Didnt we beat them the last time we met them in a tournament?

In Euro 2000? England won just one match in the group stage and it was against Germany. Germany was even worse and got just a single point, but they both got knocked out.

Franz Beckenbauer believes England made a stupid mistake by failing to avoid a second-round match against Germany at the World Cup in South Africa.

The two sides will meet in Bloemfontein on Sunday after England failed to win Group C despite beating Slovenia 1-0.

"Stupidly, the English have slipped up a little by finishing second in their group," said German great Beckenbauer.

"The English look a little tired... they are burnt out. We respect them but we certainly don't fear them."

England's win over Slovenia made certain of their place in the knockout stages of the competiion, but they were denied a meeting with Ghana on Saturday when a late winner by the United States against Algeria put them on top of the group table.

Beckenbauer attacked England's style of play earlier in the tournament, saying they had "gone backwards into the bad old days of kick and rush", but admitted they looked better in their final group match.

606: DEBATE
Anything Beckenbauer says from now to Sunday will only fire up the England players even more

BRFC

"England's first two appearances at the World Cup were paltry, but they improved against Slovenia," Beckenbauer, who won the tournament as a player and a coach, told German newspaper Bild.

"What makes them dangerous is that their key players Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and John Terry sense that this could be the last chance in their career to win a World Cup. And after all, England have been waiting since 1966 for a title.

"After they failed to qualify for Euro 2008, England hit rock bottom. Fabio Capello appears to have brought discipline to the troops, [he] has brought in a new structure."

Beckenbauer said "a game like this [England v Germany] should be a semi-final, not a last-16 game".

However, he believes the German players are fresher than England's, a situation he put down to the rigours of Premier League football.

"The Premier League players have got to play far more games than their Bundesliga colleagues, including two national cup competitions," added Beckenbauer, who scored one of West Germany's goals in a 3-2 quarter-final win against England in Mexico in 1970.

"Therefore, when it comes to a World Cup or a European Championships, they are burnt out. Our players, on the other hand, seem to be in a physically better condition."

Just read a priceless joke :

Rob Green has trained today and in 3 hours he had 4,000 shots fired at him and did not concede a single goal. Tomorrow, he and Heskey will train with the rest of the squad.

As our spanish waiter friend would say, those are facts so how can it be delusion? Germany have played as many good games in this world cup as us, 1.

England will certainly have to improve on recemnt form to compete with Germany. The Germans are the team in form with youth on their side. If Schweinsteiger and Ozil have recovered from their recent knocks Germany will be a tough nut to crack. It will be a tough game for both teams. However, I reluctantly give the nod to Germany!

I have a feeling this is the going to be the match where Rooney and especially Lampard come alive.

Rooney has always publicly stated he has alwas wanted to face Germany in the knock out phases, plus he has to be a bit dissapointed in himself.  He should be super fired up for this!

Lampard has slowly been improving and I think this WC , for him, is going to be a microcosm of last season.... start slow, and then explode into form.

Im going for a 3-2 England victory, I expect it to be a fantastic match and would like to see the same lineup as vs Slovenia.

------------------Defoe---------------------------------------

I like this as Terry can help cover for Johnson, and Cole for Upson.  We put our strongest CB next to our weakest FB and vise verse.  Also Cole will help cover for Gerrard, who I must admit was very disciplined vs Slovenia....but can we count on him to consistantly be so responsible? History would say no.   I know it asks a lot of Cole to be able to get forward, yet help ensure the left side is protected....but if any LB int he world can its him, and he can!  Barry will also make it easier for the other mids to get forwards.  Lampards and Milner are both intelligent players and that should allow them to go forward while the other one drops back a bit.  This should allow Milner to get those crosses in, and Lamps to make those runs into the box that gets him bags of goals for us every season.  Gerrard can get forward due to Cole and Barry.  We have the power and skill of Rooney and the pace of Defoe ahead.

for starters this isn't the same old strong physical and assertive german teams of old.....................well 4 of em arn't even german!

this is a young & athletic team with lots pace in the front 3, and they have some pace and guile and will be dangerous in the last 3rd, so Barry needs to have a good game. In the middle and last 3rd they are very fluent and schwienstirger is key cos he is their best player...............so if he's injured thats GREAT NEWS as he is the glue in their midfield and without him Lamps can push on................and maybe score

at the back they arn't so good, two biggish solid centre-backs who can only pass short - so put them under pressure and get it into feet fast and early

lahm is great going forward but lightweight defending, so gerrard take him on

the leftback is really a centreback, big and strong but not very attacking so we need to push milner well up the pitch and hit crosses early

we can be very powerful team and can definitely out-muscle them if we play PL style, but we mustn't sit back and let them play

piece of cake................england 2-1 win

Good to see someone pointed it out, 4 of them aren't even German   . I agree though this is one of the weakest German teams for a while. It looks as if they are going to rush Ozil through his ankle injury to play which probably means beforehand he'll get an injection, i don't see him doing brilliant but who knows and of course Schweinsteiger & Boateng look likely to both be out. We should really win this match, i can't see how we'd lose it.

What does that mean they're not even German? They play for Germany, they have German passports, most of them were born in Germany - what else do you need to be called a German? You may say they're not of German descent, but that's not what defines your nationality.

Personally not all that confident about tomorrow's gme however I am not sure why anyone thinks Germany are a team in form.  Even their one good result was only achieved aginst an Australian side that put in arguably the worst performance of the entire World Cup so far.

A good point, but the citizenship rules have been relaxed in the past ten years so it's up to them really.

As for what's going to happen tomorrow, god knows. I just hope it's a good game.

I'm slightly erring towards wanting Germany to win, purely because I've got a £10 bet with a mate and I also got them in a sweepstake. Just to be clear, I have nothing against England, honest!
