August 23, 20169 yr Great footage of the Bridge in 1979. To me 1979 doesn't seem that long ago. But it's 37 years! Where does the time go. I'd just started secondary school in Aug 79.
August 23, 20169 yr ^^ There was something more magical about seeing an old set of floodlights from a distance, especially as you approached an away ground^^ Doesn't seem so long ago either to myself though I met my then to be wife in 79. (should have kept with football)
August 23, 20169 yr Became supporter of the Blues in 79, when in SW6 for the first time. Remember the Bridge quite well - looks a bit like middle-ages for me now; quite a different world. 37 years - unbelievable. Hope they give me 37 years more.

Ersk I think you are about the same age as me. That is exactly how I remember the Bridge best as I started going in the late 70's. I had my first season ticket the 78-79 season. I think we only won 3 games at home that season but I still remember those days very fondly. The crowd and atmosphere more than made up for any disappointment in the results. We did have some decent young players back then though. Might have been different if we hadn't pissed off Eddie Mac.
August 23, 20169 yr I was in the west stand that night for the sunderlandg game and a group called Azect camera being escorted around the ground before kick off Even then you could feel the atmosphere in thea air that if we lose it was going to kick off Then you had the west ham ambush after the game on they way back from Wimbledon I was mates with one of the ticket collectors who worked at Parson's Green tube back then. He hid in the ticket office for an hour while all the bedlam ensued above him. Apparently when the train finally reached Earls Court it was a right mess. Half the doors were hanging off.

Glory hunting scouse lovers taking the p**s that we had just gone down. My reply was at least I go and watch my team! Going to school in Beckenham had to put up with Palace fans laughing about them beating us 5-0 in pre season!! They weren't laughing on the day when Chelsea went through the Homesdale to say Hi!!!!
August 24, 20169 yr Author I dont like Cricket, i hate it!! true it bores the crap out of me & i havent got a clue about the rules, but i saw this & thought some of you might like it.. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/aug/23/the-spin-forgotten-story-first-floodlit-cricket-match?CMP=fb_a-sport_b-gdnsport

Quite a good end take that one, scattered them in all directions.

August 27, 20169 yr Back in 1979 -1983ish. There were a few Ipswich Town and Nottingham Forest supporters in my year at school. I met one a few years ago and he had become a Man Utd fan. Probably about end 1992/93...
August 27, 20169 yr Chelsea 5-0 Derby (August 1983) Division 2. The beginning of one of the very best years, both on & off the pitch ...
August 27, 20169 yr Still to me one of the best season ever John Neil brought well and some of the best away support l ever seen no one could touch us on the pitch and off
August 28, 20169 yr Palace away (1983-84) Division 2 ... I think Palace more or less vacated their ground for us that day. It was like the London marathon on arrival. All CFC.
August 28, 20169 yr So much for Crystal Palace being 'The team of the 1980s' as predicted by a few sports journalists in May 1979 when Palace were promoted to Division 1 .. Picture above shows them in the League Table 5th from bottom of Division 2 in late 1983/84...
August 28, 20169 yr Didn't get to the Brighton away game that year, but going to school near Brighton, a large amount of school mates who were Brighton went to it. The stories they told, one mate knew what was coming that day and sat in their main stand, he watched from a far, and spotted some of our Brighton mates in their north stand who although about 15 were wannabee hooligans, when Chelsea invaded the north stand, they were over the back wall of the stand and seen legginng it up the old Shoreham road, this was denied Monday morning in school, but to be fair they said they hadn't never seen an away turnout like it,or since
August 28, 20169 yr Brighton was a great day out. Got down there early and had a few drinks in the pub, remember some undercover plod walking around in the pub and people whistling "the Sweeney" and laurel & hardy tunes. We had tickets but when we got there thousands of Chels and a massive scrum to get in. Ground was packed, ended up near Hickey and his mates at one point, then they went off somewhere to have some fun. Great day out, would never happen today...
August 28, 20169 yr Chelsea 5-0 Derby (August 1983) Division 2. The beginning of one of the very best years, both on & off the pitch ... if anyone can correct me but that season was the beginning of the end for clive walker wasn't it? don't think he was a regular in that team.
August 28, 20169 yr Apparently someone at the club liked the look of the rugby league 'v' in the 50's! Thank heavens we moved on from white shorts and black socks. That training session looks rather cold. I wonder what became of Warren Tennant, don't think his football career amounted to much after appearing for us in the Southern Junior Floodlit Cup. Team photo from 32/33. Harry Medhurst during the war. Eight goal thrill ride. Edited August 28, 20169 yr by Charles Ryder
August 28, 20169 yr Cambridge away (1983-84) Division 2 ... incredible turnout! We arrived before kick off, joined the *massive queue* and didn't get in until half time. There were still hundreds of CFC behind us. I'd guesstimate 10,000 plus CFC trying to get into a tin-pot ground of just 11,500 capacity? There were 1000s, upon 1000s of CFC milling around the ground beforehand and I honestly didn't see a single Cambridge scarf. I think they just kept their heads down ...
