gojo_ed Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/17566188 Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov has been diagnosed with acute leukaemia, the West Midlands club have announced. The condition was diagnosed following tests after the Bulgaria international, 32, developed a fever following Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Arsenal ."We expect to learn more about the situation in due course," Villa said. "Stiliyan is cherished by many and he will get from Villa every ounce of love and support that we have to help bring this to a positive conclusion."A club statement added: "During this time we ask that Stiliyan's privacy is placed ahead of all inquiries and trust that we will share information as we receive it." Very sad news...Hopefully at his young age he'll be well equipped to beat it.
ant-sw6 Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Awful news announced in the last hour that Villa's captain Petrov has been diagnosed with lukemia. Wish him all the best and hope for a speedy recovery. Poor lad.
ant-sw6 Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Just made another thread the second after this one sorry. Awful news though, hoping he can make a full recovery.
gojo_ed Posted March 30, 2012 Author Posted March 30, 2012 No worries! It is awful news indeed, I wouldn't wish cancer on my worst enemy. Has been quite a bad year healthwise for footballers with Abidal, Muamba and now Petrov. I suppose it serves as a reminder that they're normal people at the end of the day, here's hoping he can make a swift recovery.
2211 Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Awful news. Best wishes to him and his family, and hopefully he can make a full recovery.
Zola's Love Child Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Awful news. I hope with the support of his family and friends he can overcome this. Far too young to be worrying about a serious disease.
wxwax Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 (edited) An aggressive cancer. Such a scary diagnosis. I hope his fitness helps him against this awful disease. It's always shocking when an athlete succumbs, like Petrov or Muamba. These things descend upon our lives out of the blue. One day fine, the next day dreadfully ill. I remember when I was a young boy and one day a fellow student stopped during football, went to the end of the pitch and threw up. He disappeared for a few days and came back with a diagnosis of diabetes. Just like that his life was changed, forever on a needle and a highly restricted diet. We take our health for granted, those of us who have good health. But who knows what tomorrow may bring? Good luck to Petrov. And nice to see Muamba posting a photo of himself... alive. moi Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Very sad news indeed for one so young. I wish him all the best. There is a post from a Villa fan (Holte?) in the Chelsea v. Villa thread, asking any Chelsea fans who happen to be attending the match to join in the applause for Petrov.
Virosh Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 One of the few universally loved, respected and admired Bulgarian players. I wish him a thorough recovery. His whole country and everyone who loves the game are with him. Get better, Stenly!
Chippy Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Lets hope his fitness helps him recover from this, hope he comes through it ok.
BlueBeard Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 That is hellish news, really hope he can overcome this.
mad_mac Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Really hope he can pull through this. I see in teh Villa Match thread, a bloke called the Holte Ender has said they all plan on standing and applauding at the 19th minute (his shirt number) to show their support, and they've asked that those traveling do the same. I hope those that travel do participate.
barak81 Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 To give people an insight in to what petrov is going through, I spent most of decmeber and January around this desiese. The treatment is as bad if not worse the cancer its self. It will be 6 months of nausia, infections like phenmonia, colitis etc, baraly able to get to make it to the bathroom. He will be isolated in a room and it will be advisable that only family visit and not to offten And when he comes through it the chances of relapse or 50-50 if not higher. He will have to be strong and ready to fight and even then it may not be enough. My prayers are with him just like they are with every one that has to go through this destructive illness. I have started to look in to the variouse cancer charities and I am desprate for some one to find somthing easier to take the chemo. We need to be able to beat this thing with out breaking people down like tis
wxwax Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Thanks for that insight, Barak81. 15 years ago or so I briefly went out with a young woman whose leukemia was in remission. She described the hell of chemo and essentially said she probably wouldn't do it a second time. Through her I learned about bone marrow transplants, how hard it is to find donors and matches, and how poor the long term prognosis is for people like her. She was healthy when she dumped me. I have no idea if she's still alive today. Cancer is dreadful.
sals Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Petrov is a player i have always respected, hope he can overcome this. Will always remember this goal
erskblue Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Awful news. Hope he gets through it and makes a complete rceovery.
Ruh Buh Juh Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Had a friend at school who is a huge Celtic fan, he even had the chance of meeting him once on a flight, and he always raved at how good a player he is. Awful news, wish him a full and speedy recovery.
ace Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Just saw that he announced his retirement from the game, for obvious reasons. Always rated the guy, thought he could've been a useful squad member a couple seasons ago. Hope he is able to beat this and live a long and happy life with his family. Best of luck Stiliyan!

EdinburghBlue Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Horrible news, lets hope he can recover from it!
Gem Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Devastating news, really hope he can beat this, no one deserves any form on cancer, such a horrid disease that needs to be beaten once and for all. Fingers crossed, prayers offered - get well soon. For Christ sake I really couldn't give a sh*t about world aid - cancer needs beating NOW.
wxwax Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Indeed Have you ever been tempted to look her up? No, I'm not very good at keeping touch when I change cities.
moi Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 No, I'm not very good at keeping touch when I change cities. And, of course, given that she dumped you...
