Oscar - Little Diamond

Featured Replies

We should definitely be looking to move him on. He's had enough time to prove himself here and he's never been consistent. I guarantee if he stays he'll play well for a short while before turning to dross like he does every season.

Mkhtiryan - 298 appearances, 104 goals, 83 assists (27)

Gotze - 278 appearances, 91 goals, 81 assists (24)
James Rodriguez - 270 appearances, 76 goals, 89 assists (24)
Oscar - 255 appearances, 53 goals, 55 assists (24)
Isco - 238 appearances, 41 goals, 46 assists (24)
Coutinho - 227 appearances, 39 goals, 35 assists (23)

Stats can be funny like that.

Oscar has been a below par footballer for more than half a season....every season since he has been at Chelsea.

Maybe we should send that to every other team in Europe in the hope they haven't actually watched him on a consistent basis like we all have.

Oscar scored 8 goals and had 5 assists. Does not look that bad, right?

Well, in CL:

Oscar's 2 goals and 1 assists were against the world beaters Maccabi Tel Aviv

In PL:

Oscar scored against Swansea (1), Sunderland, Palace (1). The aforementioned team ranked 12th, 17th and 15th in the PL last season, an average of 15th position.

In League Cup:

Oscar scored a hat-trick against another world beating team in MK Dons.

Considering the quality of opposition against whom Oscar scored his goals and assists last season, it gives me a pretty good idea about his level of performance and standard.

Well, this is the thing with stats: you can literally mould them anyway to make your point. Should rather trust one's own eyes regarding a player's performance. And Oscar has been sh*t.

Stats only tell half a story. I have been watching the guy play for 4 years at this club now and he's gotten progressively worse with each passing season. This season he has been that bad at times that he has struggled to even get on the bench, he barely featured at all towards the end of the season.

Inconsistent player who we would be wise to sell with or without a replacement.

A deep midfield three is the way to go to bring out the best in Cesc and Hazard.

I am by no means a fan of Oscar or want him to stay, but I'm sorry but it annoys me when people rip into stats like that.

If it's so easy to sweep up vs those opponents then I assume a lot of #10s in the country have them stats? If it's so easy to score a hat trick vs MK Dons how come Costa and Willian failed to net and Hazard needed the spot to do so?

I think we'd be stupid to sell him. Was no worse than about 10 other players this season and has plenty of ability. Could well go somewhere with a better attacking manager than Jose and make us look like chumps (once again). Let's see what Conte can do. I've said this before but there's no way Jose was training attacking, all our attackers got progressively worse and looked like they didn't know what was happening at times. Yes, the season before last we had a good 3 months attacking wise but in Jose's first season back we actually played better football, we had to, we only had Torres up front so needed to be more than the sum of our parts, hence I still feel 4 points off the top with Torres was a better achievement than the league win.

Going out to PSG when they had 10 men and we were at home tells you everything you need to know about Jose and modern football. No one knew what to do, how to react, and looked dead.

So are we blaming Jose for Oscar's form?

I was one of his proponents before this season and now Im starting to think its make or break for him under Conte. He just hasn't been good enough to continue as anything other than a bit part player

And what about Oscars form the previous seasons?

I think anyone still expecting Oscar to suddenly become this great player are deluding themselves. He is inconsistent as hell, always has been. Stupid to sell him? I actually think we'd be stupid to keep him.

I think he will flourish under Conte. He will suit well being asked to press intensely.

Its when we have the ball thats the issue. NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!

No one else provides the movement Oscar does for us, still contributes well defensively even when playing poorly and his goals and assists are still pretty decent considering how badly people talk about him.

I will only entertain the idea of selling him when he starts failing to do the above. Until then he's still a useful member of the team.

Dear oh dear

Costa netted 16 times and assisted 11. And he did not need to have a hat-trick against Mk Dons to do that. Willian is not a goal scorer, thats not his USP. Oscar literally lives off his "goal-scoring stats".

Hazard had one of the worst falls from graces I have ever seen in football, Oscar did not. This was pretty much a "proper" Oscar season. This was not a anamoly for Oscar, it was the norm.

Care to expand on that?

I'm expecting plenty of people to disagree but I would at least like to see well presented arguments.

3 Goals and 3 Assists in 26 PL appearances? Thats not 'pretty decent'. Each goal against a bottom half of the table team. Don't let a HT against MK dons distort the stats.

In addition, his overall play is way below what is expected. Its easy to hide behind false stats. But most fans accept that in most games he literally has no impact. Its' not good enough to be average at Chelsea. Which is exactly what he is.
