Oscar - Little Diamond

My labrador runs around a lot too, better first touch than Kuyt also.

Liverpool used to win a lot of games because of his workrate. I find a lot of people really underrate how instrumental a hard working player can be to a result. They might not score all the goals but you can bet they stop a lot of attacks from the opposition turning into goals.

Unfortunately the point of football is to score more goals than the opposition.

"Work rate" is pointless if it doesn't result in goals. It defeats the point of winning the ball back if chances are you will lose it shortly after. If running was everything, Jordan Henderson would have a Ballon D'or.

Post-Mourinho, the football world had to accept that an attacking player is no good unless they are able to contribute defensively. Fast forward a decade and now many fans and managers overrate the defensive aspect and wondered why their teams can't break two banks of four.

I'm not saying players who have solely work rate deserve to be winning awards like that but you can't deny that they can be extremely beneficial to teams when they win games. Also I never said that he lost the ball, I'm saying that he wouldn't necessarily go up the pitch and score. But to win the ball back and give your team the ball shouldn't be overlooked.

Totally Agree with the above 2 posts.

1. If you are an attacker, workrate should not be your biggest asset.

2. Players with a good engine on them (park-ji-sung, essien, kante etc) are always essential to the team.

Now the main question, what is oscar's role in the squad. Is he their simply for his workrate when our first 11 boasts Kante, Matic, willian in the midfield. If he is in the team as a goal scoring midfielder then sorry, he is light years away. If its for "energy", then i feel its overkill and Conte might be slightly overdoing the workrate thing.

Just dont find a use for this guy. He simply is not good enough for Chelsea.

You can't have too many players in one team who have work rate as there biggest asset. Willian and Oscar come to mind and there's only usually space for one.

That's why Fabregas should be in the team.

If Oscar is ever going to make it at Chelsea ( I doubt he ever will), this is the kind of game he needs to take control. He got Kante and Matic to cover the defence, it's on him to run the midfield and setup our attack, instead he contributed very little apart from the 'good work rate'.

Good decision. If you go there, most likely you are not coming back - meaning coming back to any decent team or league.

It's something good to do at the end of the carrier.

I don't blame him even he's been very unreliable for last 3 season. Maybe this season he will shine with Conte as a manager.

He was pretty good today. Created three or four quality chances, and honestly if Costa puts away that sitter in front of goal most are praising him. His work rate again proved very valuable. For all the flack he gets he's an incredibly useful squad player imo.

sadly, we've been here before

when he's good he's amazing but when he's bad he's a waste of space that offers literally nothing

for a player that has all the talent and potential to be amazing week in and week out, only be able to showcase this once or twice per month with this very weird inconsistency with him that seems like it can't be fixed, very frustating really

I like him in the deeper midfield role Conte is using him for.

He's pressing and tackling ability is winning us back possession a lot.

By not sticking him right behind the front man the pressure is off him slightly to be a creative focal point and he's playing decent simple passes in the opposition half and he's overlapping runs have been decent too.

Like most of the team it's a promising start to the season and I'll be hoping for it to continue.

Ok, he played well...against Burnley at home in August...play like that in a win over the big boys in the new year and I might consider a public apology

why not give it a fresh start like oscar has been given by a new manager and a new position?

'might consider a public apology', i mean come on. how self entitled and spiteful can a person be.

Eh?

He has played under 5 different managers at Chelsea and we have gotten the same inconsistency and poor performances and we have used every excuse in the sun for him for it. How many chances do we need to give him?.

first of all i don't think inconsistant play warrants abuse, at least not when the player is a loyal guy who always works hard. second of all, it's a new manager with seemingly different ideas to our previous ones. this has resulted in a deeper, more box-to-box role. thirdly and lastly, a fan giving a player who's trying his best a public apology on a forum, just listen to that. you couldn't sound more like a knob even if you tried.

You're taking my post far too seriously...it was actually a tongue in comment as I have been a very consistent Oscar critic on here for a few years now...but I still stand by what I said about Oscar needing more than one good performance against a newly promoted side to prove he is any different from the very disappointing signing he's been over last four years

One of his good games, no real highlight moments as far as I could remember. My opinion still remains unchanged, if this is his good game, I hate to see his sub standard or bad games.

+1. I used to really rate him and defend him a lot. I just feel like he has never developed since we bought him. Honestly I watched Burnley, he played decently but I struggle to remember a specific play or pass. I feel that's basically how he plays on his better days. This may just be me but I just feel like in comparison to Willian and Hazard his play lacks incisiveness.
