So what is needed to win the league this year

Featured Replies

Apart from getting more points obviously!

Last season if we had played better against the bottom half of the league we would've pushed mancs much closer - think of all those points lost. So maybe too many big game players and not enough grafters would be fair, although we did have too many games too. And of course all season we had mis-firing centre forward

Last time Jose was here he wanted to win every game, 1-0 would do and he had the right balance of skill and athleticism to do just that

This time, he has more flair players to blend in, although du Bruyne and van ginkel look strong players and lukaku looks like a Drogs replica, maybe also give essien an enforcer role a bit like Makele - although I am not sure he is up to it

Defence looks powerful but maybe not that quick but plenty pace everywhere else so looks a good blend

So the key this season is to a. Repeat last years good performances against the top 6

B. do not drop points against the bottom 6 at any cost

C. Do not enter 8 competitions or travel to Japan in December

D. Make SB a fortress - fans can help here

E. improve our shooting

Only worried about City as they are bit of a bogey team for us and they are very strong squad but we can pip them to the title

Not sure if this is the best place to post this but i was reading a similar thread on the redcafe about the league title this season.Pretty good read on Us,City and Utd chances of the winning the title. Some of the stuff i read on there particularly from one member about our team was laughable.

its ridiculous how they underestimate chelsea, considering they were outplayed in each and every game against us last season

we may not win the league next season, but theres no way theyll finish above us

I honestly feel if we can get one of our strikers to score goals that will be the difference, for me that is all we are missing. Between the 3 strikers we had last season we only scored 10 league goals, nobody is going to win league titles with figures like that. We just need 1 regular goal scoring striker and the others strikers to get the odd goal here and there.

Oh, and no November blip this year would be nice

Have got to agree completely with Scott.  We really don't need an RVP or a Suarez but if our three strikers combined can score at least 30 goals next season that would be a major help!

And of course the mid-season blip always seems to rock us. We are always strolling along nicely and are a handful of points ahead of the pack and then slip in November and tend to never get back up completely. Hopefully with the experience our young lads have and the determination and winning spirit Jose has and will instill in the players, that mid-season dip in form will be a thing of seasons past.

And lets all take a moment to comment on how much nicer of a page Shed End is compared to redcafe!  ::clap2:: KTBFFH!

Well they won the league comfortably last season. Won the necessary games and as some wrote in their forum they have a better CM with Carrick and miles ahead in strikers dept with RvP leading the line.

Bring in De Rossi or Khedira and we are lot closer. Snatch Rooney away from them and we should beat them.

Certainly mixed opinions on there, some are saying that they have us as favourites for the league.

Yours obviously going to get a lot of biased opinions because that's the nature of football fans.

A recurring opinion seems to be that our squad looks light and lacks depth. Not sure what to make of that, I can only assume that rival fans may not see that a lot of our players are quite versatile and don't have set roles within the squad.

However my favourite post so far was one fan commenting about Jose:

"I don't even think he's particularly tactically astute."

I know im going to sound like a broken record and please dont shoot me for it but i think our problem last season was playing Torres too much when he was clearly out of any kind of form.

I hope that Jose will be able to drop him if he is unable to perform at a decent level. I have hopes that we sign Rooney (never thought i would say that) and that Lukaku can really take the step up to be our front man.

Scoring goals wins games and last season we didnt have a striker who did that enough in the league.

Going into the season with only two strikers last yearly was a massive mistake by the club especially as Sturridge would happily of joined Liverpool during the summer.

Moses was never an option to play as a striker and so Torres was basically automatic pick by default which just didn't make sense, regardless of his form you can not rely on any player that much.

Even though I think there is room for improvement with regards to the quality of our forwards I think going into the season with 3 players who could all lead the line will make us a better team over the course of the season because if nothing else there will be options on the bench to change things.

We had Benitez as coach, Torres as our only choice for striker and Benayoun as the impact player. Winning the title was practically handed to ManU last season.

2 out 3 sorted. 3 out 3 + De Rossi/Khedira and we are set.

I'm with both of these... I think last seasons most of the games we lost we could have won had we had a decent finisher - Torres was never in that form last season (and hasn't been since he joined us) and sadly neither was Demba Ba for the second half of the season, especially not in the league.

Call me stupid but I'm not writing Torres off yet either - maybe I'm just hopeful but maybe Jose can bring something out of him that no other manager has yet at Chelsea? It just depends whether like Uno said Jose will be prepared to drop him if he doesn't perform as a Championship winning striker should...

To be fair, most of them thought Jose was an advantage and one even said "if Moyes wasn't our manager and someone said that he's as good a manager as Mourinho is they'd probably be laughed at by everyone."

I don't often read other fans' forums but once in a while it makes quite interesting reading.  A real mixture of over-confidence and thinking they haven't strengthened enough.

In truth this forum reads exactly the same.

Either almost blind confidence in the team or doom mongering saying we need to improve X, Y, Z.

It's just the nature of football fans and the internet seems to bring the worst in all of us.

Oh and laughed as well when one said they didn't want the media circus that came with Jose!  Yeah SAF was so low-profile and didn't court controversy at all did he?

If you consider in 10 years with Everton Moyes never once won vs a team that finished in the top 4 and when you add that to their average midfield then I think next season is going to be very enjoyable!
