Willian

Again he sets up ( or is pivotal in) the opening goal.  He really has contributed a lot more to putting goals in the back of the net since Christmas.  He just needs to start bagging them himself though by today's performance it would appear he has been told to shoot more.

Not great shots today but worth taking a pop regardless, perhaps could have aimed for the far post?

Nice assist for the opener and was a well worked goal by all three attacking midfielders.

Good game, but I don't see how this surprises anyone really.

All he really needs is competition, he's always working hard, that's what you will get from him, he is also a good footballer. Now that he has competition though he knows he has to bring more to the matches, hence why he was trying to beat the fullback a few times and went for the shot when he was in a decent position.

The first 4 months Willian was here was the best of his Chelsea career, when he had competition. He is a very useful player, he might not be worth the price tag but I hope he stays here, he is a real asset to the side we just need more variety and I think Cuadrado might be able to bring that. Obviously it wasn't working out with Schurrle and Salah.

Another good performance from Willian. He must be putting in the extra hours on the training ground. Has been looking very good the last few games. Passing better and dribbling well. Keeps possession of the ball so well for a tiny guy. If he can keep this up and just bag a few goals, this thread could be renamed 'the Willian Appreciation Thread' or something instead of just plain old 'Willian'.

Willian MOTM today.

I love him.

he's on borrowed time mate, I know a thing or two about the game and let me tell you, once we re-sign schurrle he'll be back on the bench double quick.

I could probably post this in the Oscar or Willian thread, as both seem to get equal criticism of the “must be replaced, not good enough” variety pretty quickly. We are currently sitting top of the league because of these guys, not inspite of them. The work that Willian gets through game in game out is incomprinhcibale… I’m not sure if I have ever seen anything like it.. Check out every time Ivan is forward, and we our contender, who is covering right back, the clue is he has an afro!  He drives us forward with the ball is able to take possession of it under pressure and release us quickly.

On to Oscar, getting compared with Errickson and Corzola, neither of them are asked to put in the same defensive shift, neither of them tackle for toffee… and furthermore, neither of them are watched by you and me with such scrutiny week in week out. I guarantee they have sh*ty games and spells, otherwise there teams would be in the top 4 perhaps? Fact is Oscar is not the second coming of maradona, he’s a dam good player who ticks in our system and is still only 23. Consistency will come with age

I can’t understand how people want to swap two players who work their asses of for us week in week out, our handpicked by our manager (because he had options, most of us would have gone with Mata) and have been ever present in a team that is now 7 points clear at top, for players who can’t get their respective teams in to the top 4!... every one looks good on MOTD

I agree, but remember the league isn't over.

I still think we have to raise the bar if we are to win the league, we have overcome some hard places, Villa for example just then. But we can't approach every game in that way we have to do better in the future, we have had moments when we just aren't clinical enough or creative.

City will get stronger at one point, not negativity it's just true, going to be a difficult challenge until the very end the way I see it. I just hope Cuadrado most of all has influence because if he does I'm sure Willian will also.

Seemed to step up yesterday but he had a good game at home to Villa. Maybe the Cuadrado signing had given him a kick up the arse or maybe this is just his level. Fact is he's on course to achieve the same number of goals and assists he normally does.

fact is the best manager in the world keeps playing him despite many other options. surely that suggests something?

He also just spent £26 million on someone who plays in the same position.

He also player Mikel a lot up until signing Matic. All that's beside the point though. None of Willian's detractors would be of the opinion that he couldn't produce what he did yesterday.

alternatives to mikel given ramires was a first choice last season:

-david luiz out of position

-frank lampard

alternatives to willian mourinho has had available to him:

-salah

-mata

-de bruyne

-schurrle

-remy

-ramires

yeah, congratulations on a fair comparison there fella.

tell us again how once schurrle is back willian will be out of the side. preferably whilst wrongly guessing my age and using that as a reason to not engage with the argument.

I think I said your posting style was indicative of a certain age but don't remember it too well. Apologies for that seeing as it apparently stuck in your head for a while.

My point was that Mikel was pretty well established in the team until Magic's arrival. I hope the same happens with Willian and Cuadrado. I think Willian can have a role as a squad player but I've seen nothing in his time here or before that to suggest he's what we need at the highest levels if competition.

Ok fella?

everyone knows you don't really rate willian. that's fine.

its just amazing that you seem unable to accept mourinho does. instead we have to read the logical acrobatics from you where;

-he has no other choice but to pick him

-or that once schurrle is back he'll be out of this side

-or that schurrle was sold because we'd not get enough money for willian

-if he gets an assist then the cuadrado signing has given him a kick up the arse

it is all a bit unedifying.

Salah was never good enough but I think the situation with Schurrle is more complex than you're pretending. The illness seems to have really affected him and the offer from Wolfsburg was impossible to turn down.

As for Willian I accept that Jose rates him but that doesn't mean he can't be improved upon. A decent game against Villa doesn't change that but it's a good start. Let's see how he builds on that or if its a false dawn like it was with Mikel a few months ago.

Unedifying as it may be to you (apologies to your delicate sensibilities) I'll be delighted if he turns into a top class player with a decent end product.

A good start due to a "decent" game vs Villa?  See I thought you mean building on top of being one of the most important players in January.  Well, lets see what Willian did in January that's already being discredited, as I predicted (well, to be fair, kind of like predicting that if you jump in a lake you'll probably get wet. Im not exactly Nostradamus here.) in the Swansea thread.

You know,

-Scoring opener vs Watford

-Setting up opener vs Newcastle with his quick/short corner

-Pivotal in setting up the only two goals against Swansea that werent basically Swan OG's, whilst he was on the pitch.  Including an amazing solo-run and curving throughball for the 4th.

-Assisted game winner vs Liverpool

-MOTM, atleast in my mind, vs Aston Villa with an assist for the opener, again.....but already downgraded to a decent shift by others.

Thats off the top of my head for January.  Pivotal in opening the scoring in 4 games in a month.  Not bad for a player who apparently has no end product.

Doesnt seem you are too happy when he has a decent end product.   If he has an even better February, will we be talking about a "good start after one decent game" or will some people accept the fact Willian is starting to improve in that area?  When did beloved Schurrle put together such a month?  You seemed delighted for Schurrle but I cant think of a month, or eve a string of games, where his end product matched that of Willian this past month.

We'll see how he fares in the next few games don't have any problem with his recent performances.. but none can deny that he had been absolutely underwhelming for most of the season and had showed almost no sings of improvement from last season.

Certain aspects of his game may of been underwhelming but as a whole, no he is not.  He is a pivotal player in a side that's playing a Cup Final, leading the league by 7 points and in the knockout stages of the CL. In fact, the one competition we have been knocked out of occured in a game where Willian didn't start. Willian's contributions to that have been immense even if not in a manner that's recorded in the Goals or Assists column.  Or do you claim this was done by a team who fielded 10 players and 1 passenger named Willian?

Aside from Zouma, who was here at CFC last season and have upped their game substantially since last season?  The changes of the team have come from new additions because they represent what we were missing last season.

Have you taken a moment to consider that, season prior to last we were no where near being title challengers, yet with the arrival of Mourinho and a few players such as Willian, CFC almost won the title last season without a form striker?  Did you consider that perhaps that feat was only made possible by players like Willian who can massively contribute to a game without a goal or an assist?

There are very few players who would be a definite improvement upon Willian, very few and I cant think of any who would be realistically attainable.  Bringing in a player whose better offensively and worse defensively could make the team worse just as likely as it being an improvement.

If anything I would point to how the team improved when Mata was removed despite him being a great goal scorer/creator.  This is a special manager with special techniques and I suspect we can all agree he is the type of manager who will sacrifice goals and assists for points on the table.  Personally, I think he has found a swell formula for that this season and one Willian is integral too.

I deny it.

I don't think he's unimprovable- I think his and cahill's places in our first 11 are where we could realistically improve, but I think he's been a very important player for us this season.

I think jose would deny it too- which is why he's picked him all season despite other options.
