Willian

The points being made about FFP are kind of irelevent because we have covered our selves in this regard by ofloading the players that management feel don't add to our cause.

It would be lovely if that were true but FFP is about managing every penny and it comes down to assessing whether you are using the resources as well as you can. A better point to make in regards to Willian's FFP value is that his wages are relatively low.

Even then this season Willian is the FIFTH most expensive player (fourth currently playing) on the books. He costs us about £10 million per season which is not something that can be easily written off (for comparison sake, Matic costs us roughly £7.5 million).

And following this logic, which is infact very logical, Willian is then worth what we paid for him because he has helped us fulfill the objective laid out

And logically speaking, Fernando Torres was worth the £18 million he cost in 2011-12 because we won the Champions League?

And Filipe Luis (a player that I actually quite like) is worthy of being the fifth most expensive current member of our squad?

Its sunk cost though, even if you lay it out over the duration of his contract. As such, it is irrelevant when it comes to judging a player. Would you have zero expectations of a player who came on a free transfer? Yes, I know people expect more from big money signings but it's really not a fair way of judging a player when there is so much that goes into deciding the transfer fee, and none of it involves the player himself.

The money we spent on players has always been important to me, irrespective of FFP, because it's vital that we conduct business in a sensible manner, even if Roman is always going to be around. But once a transfer is done, I try not to look at the fee when judging a player's performance.

^ He's just being modest. To be honest his first touch and close control are both very good, plus he's basically two-footed.

Love this bit though, clearly he's been studying Dennis Wise:

What you can do sometimes is just kick them!

I said something similar on the Villa game thread - The signing of Cuadrado is very interesting because not only does he provide direct competition for Willian on the right, but he could also allow us to play Willian in Oscar's position too. Willian's been at his attacking best in central positions for us, whether that be due to him drifting in or being deployed as the designated no.10, and I'd be really intrigued to see him in that role on a more consistent basis. We all know he's got the workrate as well to press like Oscar can from the front, and from what I've seen he'd be more of an attacking threat then he normally is on the right.

I feel as though Oscar hasn't had enough competition to this point this season and surely this has been a factor in some of his more mediocre displays. I think he needs to regain his focus a little more, and Cuadrado's arrival could indirectly help him do this.

Oscar would be the one I would drop for tomorrow. As hopeless as Wilian can be in front of goal he brings more to the game overall than Oscar does at the mo imo.

I think he could be good in front of goal if he would just develop a bit of composure. There doesn't seem to be any fundamental flaw in his technique like in the case of Ramires, but even Ramires is a better finisher. Has to do with composure I think. And that comes with confidence in front of goal, which will come when he gets a few goals, which will happen when he develops composure, ermm..

I like what Oscar brings us in midfield and I think that trio of him, Fabregas and Matic works well. Plus he's on course to get into double figures for goals for the third consecutive season with us, something that Lampard didn't manage until his third year and something that Willian has never managed despite playing as a number 10 in the Ukrainian league.

That's not a slight against Willian whom I hope has a good game for us if he starts tonight as I always do, simply a comment on how good Oscar has been despite also being wildly inconsistent at times. The fact is that Oscar probably has to sacrifice a lot of his attacking/playmaking instincts more than anyone else in the team because he's got Hazard and Fabregas around him. I think he compliments these guys' attacking play whilst also backing up Matic's defensive efforts and also helping Costa with the press.

Good point about Oscar complimenting Fabregas. They dovetail nicely in the middle, sometimes alternating roles when Oscar drops back and vice versa. Would like to Willian at no.10 though at some point, not necessarily to displace Oscar from the team entirely but just to try this out at the very least. An FA Cup game would have been ideal, but then Bradford happened didn't it lol.

Thrived at number 10, especially in the 1st half.

The goal might have taken a deflection, but the technique was sublime. Most would have lashed it into the upper.

Nothing to do with where he was playing in my view (worth noting his goal came from when he was playing on the right). He's played in the middle quite a few times already and didn't look any better than he did on the right.

I just think he's been in really good form in the past few games, most likely down to him having real competition now for his spot.

I think he looked better once he moved back to the right, I'd prefer Oscar and Fàbregas to continue in the number 10 role for the remainder of the season.

Superb finish, hopefully he starts hitting those with some more regularity, he's singlehandedly kept the title push alive with that strike.

Everton have tightened up a lot and today was a real grinder. There always seemed to be far too many White shirts up against a solitary blue one in the box tonight. Good that he scored the goal, although it was an okay(+?) performance overall.

Hopefully it will keep the stat-happy Willian-bashers at bay for a while. :)
