Diego Costa to Chelsea

Some of the comments on Gary Neville's article beggar belief. People honestly thinking Costa should be banned for 10-12 games. I would wager the majority of these people haven't even seen the incident in normal speed, just looked at slow motion videos or static images. No matter how many times they insist it was a stamp, it was not. There was no aggression in it, he simply trod on his leg as he ran to get the ball. Intentional? Yes, I think so. A stamp? Not even close.

If people honestly think that what happened on Tuesday deserves the Suarez-esque ban then they're either liars, or the British education system is in more trouble than we first thought

Adrian Durham on TS, vehemently defended Costa, Gave pelters to the FA, asked the FA to name the members of that panel , saying they had wrecked a showpiece of the season,  completely defended DC, also Paulo ferreira was on giving some views!!

It's a 3 match ban nothing more, people who say it is more than that are definitely scousers who thought the Luis Suarez bans were harsh.

What has been conveniently forgotten in all this was how another match official gave a terrible performance...it is happening every week in games up and down the country and yet little is being done about it...Costa's stamp or non stamp, and Mourinho's subsequent decision to ignore the press, is a convenient distraction for what the real problem in the game is...the woeful standard of our match officials...unfortunately that doesn't make as sexy a headline, much to the relief of the tosspots in charge of the sport...job done then

..........The FA keep setting precedents, because this is purely a media driven witch-hunt, with the outcome they wanted, when the Co-commentator on the Game, the excellent ex pro, ex Scouser, ex top player Danny murphy said it was a nothing tackle, then how did it/why did it escalate it some mob frenzy????.

Retrospective action and suspension by the FA means the Premier League’s top scorer with 17,Diego Costa, is out of this game, and also our matches against Aston Villa and Everton.

It is quite instructive to see how selectively the media hue-and-cry builds up around incidents such as those during our thrilling semi-final victory over Liverpool. That is especially the case when the current furore is compared to the low-key handling, last February, of Toure kicking out at Norwich’s Ricky van Wolfswinkel, unseen by officials, or Sergio Aguero’s two-footed studs-up jump onto David Luiz’s thigh in our FA Cup semi-final the season before.

Aguero was reprieved because referee Chris Foy ‘saw’ the lunge and awarded a free-kick – a principle changed following Wigan winger Callum McManaman’s studs-up challenge on Newcastle's Massadio Haidara.

In Toure’s case the anonymous three-man video review panel was reportedly split on the seriousness of that incident. Without unanimity the charge was dropped and the Ivorian played the next three matches – including the FA Cup against Chelsea.

No one would complain were the retrospective disciplinary panel to view all incidents equitably rather than in the current arbitrary and opaque fashion. Otherwise the risk is that the perceived seriousness of an offence appears influenced by the level and vehemence of its media coverage.

Refereeing is certain to be under scrutiny again this weekend, especially as there were several other controversial issues during our beating of Liverpool. Michael Oliver appeared to miss a penalty offence by Martin Skrtel on Diego Costa (as well as a retaliatory kick-out later by the Slovakian) and several off-the-ball strongarms by Lazar Markovic on Filipe Luis.

Great to read an insight into him...we have heard little from him all season for obvious reasons with the language barrier...comes across very humble and puts all the bs written about him into perspective

I was very interested and more than a bit surprised to read on a Q&A twitter session with Thibault that, when asked who was the most entertaining member of the squad, he answered Diego. I had visions of him just standing in the corner of the dressing room glowering, I was quite warmed to think of him being a joker!

Quite a few players have referred to Costa as the joker Beery, I'll have to find the interviews but I'm pretty sure Hazard and Fabregas have said it...

I think you're right and I do seem to remember seeing footage of him mucking about on a motorised golf cart type thingy now I think of it.  I guess his looks just have formed a stereotype in my head of mean and moody! (and scary!)

When Thibaut was asked that question Diego might have been in the room doing exactly that  :laugh2:

I have a question. Now, when he is punished, can he get more 2 match punishment when he gets 10 yellow cards?

I think if he got another red card offence his ban would become 4 games.

For totting up of yellow card offences I think he would serve a 2 game ban.

Christ, it's like Dennis Wise all over again isn't it?
