May 7, 201511 yr Not arguing that he's the greatest. Neuer's still only 29 though and his list of honours is already pretty incredible. hmm - Are they more impressive then schmeichel though. 5 premier league titles (I consider the prem, harder then the German league is now). schmeichel also has a CL trophy and a European Championship with Denmark, beating a holland team containing, Gullit, Vanbastan, Rikard, Kouman, etc and a germany team fresh of the 1990 world cup win. For me that is as great an achievement as winning the world cup as Germany keeper. However I'm judging it what I have seen with my own eyes, not the trophy cabinet
May 7, 201511 yr Think the Messi v Maradona argument will always be flawed due to how the game has moved on and also the coverage these days. There are only so many clips of Maradona compared to Messi. From my own point of view I only really watched Maradona when he was in the World Cup and he had some exceptional games along with many average ones. Messi hasn't done so well on the International stage but his consistency in the domestic game and Champions League are way ahead of anything Maradona achieved. Some folk will argue that Pele & Best were better than both but again, there just isn't the same level of footage to compare fairly. There will always be arguments for and against old v new players. Old had it more difficult on mudbath pitches, old-style heavy footballs and tackles that would be a straight red card today. But new have to deal with better, quicker defenders and be a lot fitter and disciplined themselves. Taking all that into account, you can only form an opinion on what you have actually seen so I find it difficult for younger people not to say Messi when they didn't really witness the others. So it is Messi for me and that comes from someone who practically wrote him off a season ago as looking "burnt out"!!!
May 7, 201511 yr What a f**king prick, what did he say to deserve both those comments?I'm really glad you noticed this because I was wondering the same thing. What's with the insults?
May 7, 201511 yr Got to say I cheered them on when the beat Man United2009 or 11?2009 final was unwatchable for me. I didn't want United to win it twice in a row and Barcelona didn't deserve it.
May 7, 201511 yr Looks like Depay has gone to Man U. I'm genuinely worried about that signing!! Just what United needed, another winger/attacking midfielder. Until they start signing quality centre backs I don't think it changes anything about their team.
May 7, 201511 yr Just what United needed, another winger/attacking midfielder. Until they start signing quality centre backs I don't think it changes anything about their team. Agreed. An unproven winger is the last thing they need to challenge again.
May 7, 201511 yr Agreed. An unproven winger is the last thing they need to challenge again. I'm not saying he isn't a good player but they bought Di Maria for £60m and he's been on the bench for the last quarter of the season. Supposedly they're offering Ashley Young a new deal as well so that'll be Rooney, RvP, Di Maria, Mata, Depay, Young, Valencia, Januzaj, Fellaini possibly a new striker to replace Falcao and with Nani and Hernandez returning from loan. That's 12 players for 3 or 4 attacking positions depending on the formation used.
May 7, 201511 yr I know people aren't on here 24/7 so I wanted to re-post this to ensure it isn't missed due to the amount of posts that will come after it. Just waiting for John_Galt to respond when he's available.
May 7, 201511 yr If they play Depay in his correct position, then it's a potentially dangerous signing. In fact it's a very Chelsea-esque signing, young talent with massive upside. Di Maria, Mata, Fellaini - they were all panic buys. But they still need a spine, and that may well include a keeper too. Until they get that then they'll struggle. Exciting attacking winger for the same price we paid for Willian and Cuadrado though....Disappointingly sensible.
May 7, 201511 yr Get in! Was getting nervous about this one! Do you think this affects your chances of getting Bale? If you think it was ever a possibility at all.
May 7, 201511 yr Do you think this affects your chances of getting Bale? If you think it was ever a possibility at all. Never saw it happening after the Di Maria transfer, if we ever did sign him (you can hold me to this) it would be a risky and an unwise transfer, we've just seen the risk of trying to fit Di Maria after spending 60m and throwing him in a possession-based philosophy and Bale who I'd say is even more of a counter-attacking based player than Di Maria would be even more problematic for our system so it would just be reckless to splash the apparent 90million on him. Also bear in mind we now have; Depay, Di Maria, Young, Mata (W/CAM), Januzaj, Nani. So again there's no real need for Bale. Depay rather, is a safe signing and more potential based. He's played under LVG before in a possession based Netherlands and showed he suits it, he played in a 4-3-3 for PSV as a LW, he's quick, strong and a pretty solid goalscorer and I reiterate a signing based more on potential than the finished article. Depay's going to be the first of quite a few signings who are surely going to be more defensive based. We lack a defensive minded midfielder, right back and a center back and potentially dare I say it, a goalkeeper. Alot to do but I'm just happy we're dealing with it early. May 7, 201511 yr I genuinely think Depay could push on and become a top, top player. At 22m considering his potential, successful world cup, and by far the best player in the Dutch league I think they've done really well to get him at that price. He's an athletic/strong type of forward that will get on the end of anything with his pace and has a monster shot. I liken him more to Ronaldo than the likes of Hazard - but obviously no where near that level of quality yet! I wanted us to sign him - but i'd take Isco instead.
May 7, 201511 yr as amusing as that meme is, that angle also shows how even more useless Boateng was against him than I originally thought...know I sound a bit alan hansen (remember him?) to focus more on the defending, but messi actually didn't have to do that much to send boateng crashing to the floor...move ball one way then the other, albeit at speed...would not expect JT to put up the white flag so easily
May 7, 201511 yr The more I see boateng's defending, the worse it gets...great skill from Messi obviously, but that was pretty weak what do you mean "weak"? the fact that he fell? when your ankles got twisted like that you just automatically fell you can't do anything about it
May 7, 201511 yr Depay clearly has loads of potential, I'm glad we didn't go for him though. And as good as his shots seem to be, I don't think he scored even once from outside the box this season. (from open play that is). Judging by his interviews he seems thick as a brick. Now I know you don't need the brain of a rocket scientist to be a footballer, but it's his entire attitude that bothers me. Edited May 7, 201511 yr by CFCholland

May 7, 201511 yr Could be wrong but every time I have seen this Deepay play he has looked average, this is not an after the event thing, Val may be able to confirm my underwealment from the world cup
May 7, 201511 yr Boateng clearly went with the 'i'm not letting you on your left foot no matter what' option. Unfortunately he was marking Messi, not Robben, who is more than capable of scoring with his right and is happy to take the opportunity when so gloriously offered.
