Pogba, Varane, Reus... These are the signings we were all hoping for this summer to get to the level of Barca, Bayern, Madrid, etc. So far things haven't looked particularly promising.

The biggest weaknesses are in central midfield and right wing. Last time Mourinho spoke of surgical improvements. All was done precisely and without wasting time. Seems to be a lot less clarity this time around.

Exactly. Does Jose really expect to challenge for the CL title with finished players like Falcao? How can we match our European rivals? Maybe FFP has truly taken an effect and we just can't spend big anymore, even though Platini said FFP restrictions may be lessened.

In any case, if we want to step it up in the CL stage, we need young, hotshot talents in the mold of Hazard around that 22-24 age. Griezmann is one that really fits the bill, Lacazette and Fekir are others that would be great signings.

Just watched the game too, thought Falcao looked like Torres on a bad day and even less mobile. Mark my words this will be a disaster of a signing and that we can all see it a million miles away makes it all the more baffling.

I'm not one for conspiracies, but I wouldn't be surprised if Falcao's agent was whispering in Jose's ears, begging him to take his client Falcao on. As others have stated in this thread, the two share the same agent. Maybe there's some incentive in there -- you rub my back, I'll rub yours. Perhaps in the near future, Jorge Mendes will help us sign some young South American talents for a cut rate price. With all the shady deals in football, who really knows.

He's sh*t in one game for Colombia and now he's an awful signing...my god. Did anyone watch England last night? The whole team was sh*t. I don't know about the other copa teams, but what about messi, sanchez, di maria, and the other south american EPL players? Can't judge players on international games. Messi isn't the best for Argentina and look at their team? Yet for barca he is magic.

No, he's been sh*t for over a year, that is why i think he will be a bad signing if we do end up actually bringing him here.

Except it's very obviously just not one bad game is it?

If we 'can't judge players on international games' (why not incidentally?!) then it's down to their club form which doesn't help your argument one bit when it comes to Falcao. He's been woeful at Utd.

All the signs currently point to him being finished and washed up - and we know them better than anyone having been through it all before.

Who to buy? A striker reaching his peak or a striker who is past his best days. We've tried both and most of the times left crying on the latter case. I just don't get why we keep doing these deals.

No it's a case of people not wanting a player who has played sh*t for well over a year now and a bad game only reaffirms people's position on him. You're acting like people said they wanted him and are now saying they don't cause of one bad game. The majority don't want him anyway, it's as simple as that.

I cannot see what Jose is seeing in Falcao and i would unload Cuadrado asap.Hope to be proved wrong but wont hold my breath.

I thought Cuadrado was good today

But he always fits well with the national team.

He deserves a second chance. The teams that are interested now will probably be interested then. It's not like his value is going to plummet.

Falcao on the other hand, is coming off of a major injury and has showed no glimpses of what he was before. Not even a peak. He's just looked sh*t for a while. If Remy and Costa were consistently fit players, I wouldn't mind. But we need something reliable. It's not the time for a gamble.

Based on one game?

No it's based on 16 months of being a very average player.

Yesterday was the same Falcao as last season, it's no coincidence a United couldn't wait to shove him out the door, he's finished as a top level striker.

In terms of options available, I'm not too sure if this Falcao deal is that much of a gamble.

We seem to be getting a reasonably good deal for an experienced international striker. It'd take massive money to attract someone capable of making our strongest XI, and the option of being 2nd/3rd choice here isn't going to have that many top players knocking on the door.

It's not a position for a young/developing player, and we already have a pacey/direct option in Remy.

I'm not Falcao's biggest fan, but in terms of giving us well-rounded strikeforce options he's probably one of the better options available.

it would have to come with absolute minimum risk for me. And even then we need to look at the opportunity cost

That's a reasoned balanced view and exactly where I'm coming from on this issue. If we all agree that we need to replace Didier in the squad then who do we go for?

We could invest in someone younger, like a Benteke or Griezmann, but that's a five-year commitment. Five-year commitments have knock-on effects when it comes to future spending but also young players, or which we have a few extremely talented ones.

Contrary to popular belief, they aren't guaranteed to be successes either. People like to invoke Torres's signing when talking about Falcao, but the greatest problem with Torres wasn't that he was so bad but that he was so bad and there was no way to get out of the deal. He cost us £18 million per season and we not only had to pay that but also hamstring ourselves (pun intended because let's not forget the hamstring injuries killed his pace) by trying to get him back into form.

Falcao is a one-year deal. If it works, great. If it doesn't work then he leaves. Either way, our number one striker is still Diego Costa.

And if it doesn't work then next season we make another decision. We then have the possibility of calling on a 22 year old Patrick Bamford who may well have a successful Premier League season under his belt, or an 18 year old Dom Solanke who may have continued his phenomenal development in the academy. There may be other strikers on the market, possibly a restless Harry Kane, possibly a want-away Cavani or some other player.

It's one thing to say Falcao isn't good enough but what would be helpful is if people continued that sentence but that's actually quite tricky. It's much easier to say 'he's past it and he's been sh*t for 16 months' (when did this 16 month thing start? Was it started by the same chap who got the dates of his injury completely wrong too?) than to make suggestions about what we should do instead.

In the grand scheme of things, this is actually a fairly risk-free signing. It's a one-year deal that if it works out means we're a stronger squad and if it doesn't allows us to cut our losses after 12 months. It's sensible work by the board.

I agree that Falcao is a one year trial and not a block on our developing youngsters.  My only worry is if next season the league is a lot closer (which I think it will be) and we are in a similar situation towards the end with injuries/tiredness as we were this season, relying on a Drogba/Falcao could cost us the league.  I'm not saying we need 3 Costas but an improvement is needed, the league will be tougher and we weren't good enough in the Champions League.

I'm not sure of this one but I'm willing to see how it turns out and hope Jose knows what he's doing.  Remember this won't be the only new player we buy, I'm optimistic that there will be some better signings this summer.

It's funny cause you talk to some neutrals who blame United's tactics for his poor form yet how does that effect his pace that's clearly gone and his poor finishing?

I personally think well it's a year loan so might aswell go along with it. I reckon at least he'll get a similar amount of goals to Drogba last season so he's not a downgrade on an aged Didier Drogba. I do think though with us wanting to push on in Europe we'd better hope we hang on to Remy. We'd also better hope that his and Diego's injury problems don't persist otherwise I can see us falling short in Europe.

I reckon keeping Remy is the most important factor in the Falcao deal, if we manage to keep Remy and have Costa-Remy-Falcao as our strike force it could definitely be an upgrade on last year.

However if we lose Remy and have to bring in a 2nd new striker alongside Falcao than that definitely will be a disaster

Yeah.

If we lose Remy for Falcao it will be a disaster of a deal and we would suffer.
