Juan Cuadrado, exactly why did we sign him?

Featured Replies

We binned off André Schürrle who had a record of a goal every 4 games (11 in 44 appearances), who was playing for one of the best international sides and was only 24 and also Mohamed Salah who is flying at Fiorentina, both of whom have our team a more direct option and in Salah's case with bags of pace, for what exactly? A guy who has been given 6 appearances that have varied between anonymous and rubbish.

Does anybody know why on earth we'd do this?!?

May be because Jose expects Willian / Oscar will need to sit out some time due to injury

The same is with Dave / Luis

We are very fortunate this year to not have many injuries beside Costa hamstring and Remy.

What was your opinion of Salah BEFORE he went to fiorentina and decided to remember how to play?

I know your not addressing me, but personally I thought he could do a job for us, just needed a chance to settle and feel confident

i personally thought salah was atrocious and still think he has a lot to proved

didn't mind andre but genuinely thought cuadrado was going to prove he's a superior player....been proved wrong on that end so far but i'm willing to wait till next season

some people have defended juan using the old, 'bought mid season, he needs time to settle' - you don't buy players for that kind of money mid-season unless you expect them to make an immediate impact....so on that front, i think jose would be disappointed with his performances so far.

still plenty of time for him to prove me wrong but i feel like perhaps this was a step up too much for him? time will tell

Andre had a difficult few months and was sold. An awful decision, especially after the World Cup.

Next season, he'll be top class again and we'll be regretting selling him.

You say 6 appearances yet i bet the total amount of minutes doesn't add up to half hour.

I was a fan of Schurlle, I liked his directness and as you say his scoring tally was half decent, We don't know if it was his decision to leave for more football either.

Jose has 13 players he fully trusts, Even back up players rarely get a decent amount of game time when we are winning by a 2-3 goal margin.

I didn't think the Cuadrado deal made sense but you know what, Give him a bit of time to at least gel with the team, He isn't going to achieve that getting 5 minutes every other game.

213 minutes in all competitions, two games plus a half hour.

On the one hand, that clearly isn't enough time to fully judge a player. Seemingly he is going to be here next season so we should probably give him a proper chance.

On the other hand, I suppose the onus is on the player to actually earn a starting spot and earn more minutes than just coming on to secure a lead or to fill in for Willian when he gets knackered.

I never really wanted us to sign him in the first place, but now he is here i wish he would be given a few starts. Hopefully if we can get the title wrapped up soon he can get a few starts. At the moment, i can't see any reason why we signed him, we should have just stuck with Schurrle until the end of the season.

i very much doubt that. i think we will regret selling KDB, he will end up at one of europes top teams. Schurrle, hell spend the best part of his career fighting for CL places in the buli

I ask myself the same question every weekend after his cameo off ( or on) the bench. I guess we only got a few games left, and Jose will play his best 11 while possible ( and Juan isn't part of that). If we do wrap up the title with a few games to go, let's see how much Jose rates him. I remember Ivanoic didn't play a single season in his first half season, so there's hope for Juan. The problem is Ivanoic was a low key signing at the time, not the 25M major signing.

Agree with you, and I guess Jose would have kept Andre, but Wolfsburg were ready to pay an insane amount of money for him, so it was a no-brainer.

Schürrle hasn't done wonders in the Bundesliga thus far so he probably wouldn't have helped us a lot. But I still think that he would have been an asset especially in games against PSG, United etc.

I am very disappointed with Cuadrado and with hindsight I wouldn't have bought. But as some other pointed out, he might have been helpfulf if Willian or Oscar had sustained an injury. So, most probably he was always meant to be a makeshift option in the case injuries hit us hard.

Once we seal the title I expect Cuadrado to get a few starts and then we will be better placed to cast him out (or not).

I can only think something happened between Schurrle and Jose or that Wolfsburg were going to look at other options if Schurrle didn’t move in the winter window.

Salah made sense in that he was terrible every time he played (although that wasn’t much).

The faith Jose has shown in Cuadrado makes it mind boggling as to spending the best part of £30 million on a guy you aint going to use for half a season.

Considering we have spent £70 odd million on our right hand side and still don’t seem to have a winger capable of scoring and stetting up on a consistent basis is pretty poor given options like Sanchez were available.

I’m not sure I’d want Jose picking another player for that position tbh, he is struggling badly in that area of the park.

At first glance, Cuadrado seemed like an excellent signing and a prototypical Mou transfer. At Fiorentina, he was fearless and direct, a fine crosser, a goal threat who was unafraid to shoot from distance, hard working, fast and an excellent dribbler.

However, he is more lightweight than I had realised. In a less physical, more tactical league like Serie A it doesn't matter so much, but here it does. To his credit, he has tried to bulk up but in his initial appearances he's been too easy to bully.

Also for the reasons I've already outlined, Serie A has a different football culture to the Premier League and so Cuadrado hasn't found it easy to adapt - something he's admitted.

Schurrle would probably have done a bit better (though his form for Wolfsburg hasn't been sparkling), but Salah very much strikes me as the sort of player whom a system needs to be built around. That was never going to happen at Chelsea.

I expect Cuadrado to improve next season once he's familiarised himself with the PL.
