FIFA Officials Arrested

Featured Replies

Just purge the entire administration system and replace it with ex-players, managers, and coaches that love the game itself and are willing to lead it out of this era. Enough with the career bureaucrats.

People are acting as if UEFA aren't corrupt as well. If they get their way things would be worse.

I don't think people are naive to think the corruption doesn't spread to UEFA but the worst of it appears to be centered on  CAF specifically and then CONCACAF and CONMEBOL.

This seems to be where a lot of the backhanders etc are happening and so were UEFA to break away you would shed a lot of the deceitfulness that's been going on under FIFA's watch.

Platini as well is a lot more open to progressive thinking in football but has been held back by FIFA, an example of which is the officials on the goal line, he would like to give them more power to assist the referee but can't because FIFA rulings state that officiating needs to be uniform.

Not that I am denying any shady deals hasn't taken place but Blatter wouldn't need to bribe those federations, he's done so much for them that he would get their votes regardless.

Platini and UEFA have been well aware of all backhanded deals that have been going on, they never said anything because it was always in their favor. Now that Blatter comes in and levels the playing field, they want out? They feel that they have lost control of FIFA and now want to wander off and set up their own federation, big boys closing up the shop and leaving the smaller sides to feed off scraps. That sounds very familiar and last I checked hardly anyone was a fan of FFP.

To me, Platini and UEFA are just as responsible as FIFA are. Also Platini is the reason why Qatar even have the world cup in the first place.

I would be all for mass international effort to crack down hard on FIFA and weed out the corruption but UEFA threatening a breakaway solves nothing and only leads to more conflict. People encouraging them will be in for a surprise further down the line when we start having this conversation again. Better the devil you know, as they say.

Not sure I can agree with the FFP comparison personally.

I can't speak for anyone else but in a sport where we are forever having campaigns such as Kick It Out paraded around every year I find it hard to swallow that the next two World Cups were granted to countries with some of the most archaic mind sets when it comes to racism, homophobia and human rights violations.

How can fans and players respect initiatives such as Kick It Out when Qatar and Russia are being granted the ultimate privilege of hosting the biggest footballing competition in the world?

The whole thing stinks top to bottom.

Just to reiterate the point, Platini voted for the Qatar world cup and has been one of its biggest apologists. Considering that France and Qatar have extremely close and profitable (for France) trade agreements, and Sarkozy and Platini are old chums, you'd be very naive to assume Platini is somehow more trustworthy than Blatter.

Don't disagree with any of that but UEFA threatening to pullout and start up their own tournament isn't the right way to go about things. It doesn't solve anything, just moves the corruption from FIFA over to UEFA.

I'm more of a, if you know it's not working out in spectacular fashion, why not replace them with the next best candidate? Platini is another devil known to us but I hardly see how he could make FIFA more corrupt and even if he could, maybe that's the breaking point that needs to be reached before total reform is called for. Right now Blatter, reelected, has shown he doesn't care what anyone thinks, he has done no wrong and FIFA is awesome and the victim of a campaign etc. Haven't seen a single major sponsor or FA actually do anything. Either fear or a greater respect for money than a clean regulatory body, but nothing is changing under Blatter.

at least the corruption would be on a smaller scale, easier to detect and deal with. You would also find it harder to be a Blatter in a UEFA system as the money that might buy you Togo's vote would hardly buy you a hotel room in most European countries, let alone buy a vote from them. The potential for corruption would lessen due to less members and the cost of corruption would hugely increase ( at the same time as further limiting the organizations ability to afford bribes) as you're cutting out most of the easily bought countries, who are so poor they can be bought with a relatively modest investment.

now go get the bent f*ckers who sold the 18 and 22 world cup's, UEFA had better stand tall in this and as for the Spanish and French FA's who voted for him I hope they feel very proud of themselves and it's a pity we can't ditch them as well.

Well well well... isn't this interesting?

Sadly I imagine Blatter's resignation will change very little. While he is perhaps the head honcho, corruption in football seems to me to be endemic, and I am loathe to believe that it is the result of the actions of just one man.

Like someone said above, despite recent anti-corruption rhetoric coming from UEFA, I think we would be naïve to think that Europe is somehow not involved in any of this. I'm not entirely sure how Platini is making himself out to be innocent; out of one side of his mouth he sarcastically criticised the decision to award Qatar the 2022 World Cup, and then... voted in favour of it out of the other. I think we have a long, long way to go before we can say in any serious way that we are anywhere near winning the battle against corruption in football.

That said, we can only hope that the recent exposure is one of many steps towards the 'purging' of corrupt elements in football. I don't know what real significance finally getting Blatter's scalp will have, but even symbolic measures can be important in implementing reform.

(See you all very soon)

"Although the members of Fifa gave me a new mandate, this mandate does not seem to be supported by everyone in the world.

"This is why I will call an extraordinary congress to be held as soon as possible for a new president elected to follow me with a new election held."

Fittingly vague timeframe of course!

Well, it's a start at least.  Hopefully someone so public being investigated and forced to resign will provide warning to those thinking about filling his future vacancy

I bet that one or more of the officials that the FBI arrested squealed and will stand in witness protection.

One of them had something huge on Blatter and that's what has made him resign. He's in a corner and cannot get out.

Why go through with the whole election then resign a few days later. Weird.

Knows he's about to get caught, he can get someone else elected to collect the backhanders on his behalf.
