Mourinho's signings since he came back have been impressive

Featured Replies

I think this is something that is rarely discussed but I've been very impressed with the signings he's made since his second stint at the club. I've rated them fantastic, so so and terrible.

Fantastic

Matic

Fabregas

Costa

Willian

Remy

Zouma

So so

Schurrle

Eto'o

Van ginkel

I should probably mention both schurlle and van ginkel were signed just before mourinho came to the club so they're probably not his signings but I included them anyway.

Terrible

Salah

Cuadrado( I still think he needs time and at least a full season with us to show his worth)

Felipe Luis ( not a bad player but clearly not good enough for our team)

Special mention to azpi. I know mourinho didn't sign him but he's responsible for making him the player he is today. Let me know if I've missed any and what you guys think of his transfers so far.

Felipe Luis is obviously being limited by our tactics. He's a much better player for Brazil, and was very good for Atletico. It's disappointing to know we're wasting such a good player. As for Azpi, it's actually kind of tiresome every time I see him as a left back. His attacking game is decent but limited on the left, he's essentially an inverted left-back -- think we'd find more pleasure if we played players in their correct position (defenders anyway). Well that's just what I think as some fan with limited football knowledge.

Sorry to say but I don't think Cuadrado will ever improve.

Hmm, i think that's a bit harsh on Luis. I actually think he is an excellent full back. I love the way he makes a tackle and can put in a cross from anywhere. Azpilicueta is a lot more solid than Luis but i don't for a second think Luis isn't good enough for us. He was one of Atletico Madrid's best players when they won the league and got to the Champions League final. I think if he got more game time and was more of a regular then we would see the best of him more often than we do.

Like i said, Luis is a good player but unfortunately not for us since he can't dislodge azpi. But he'd be great for most teams. Not really his fault.

The Luis signing still baffles me a little bit not because he isn't good but just don't see the point in paying £20M for a 29 year old and put him on the bench for most of the season.

Brazilian and was with Costa last year so maybe a part of it was to help settle him here and because he is a top left back.

Was strange though

But we already have a top LB in Azpi, could of saved £20M and just kept Bertrand or played Ake there. Not that i don't like Luis because i do but seems pointless when he didn't het many games and when he did he always did well for me.

I think Luis has been good almost every game he's played in.

The only bad signings have been Salah and Cuadrado, the rest have been spot on.

Don't agree that Jose made Apzi into the player he is, he's been putting in these performances ever since Rafa gave him debut.

It was actually Di Matteo who gave him his debut.

This. I remember watching him before he came to us when he was at Marseille, was a terrific player there as well.

Like Chelsbear said I don't think Willian can be classed as terrific quite yet, if he improves his end product then certainly.

I think the major gripe people have with JM's transfers are the amount we've blown on the RW and still don't have a world class player to compliment Hazard on the other side and then there's also some of the transfers out which people don't necessarily think were great, for me KdB & Mata could have still done a good job for us as we miss assists/goals from AM and that's what those to bring to teams, oh and the ability to take a set piece. As for their defensive liabilities, are they worse than Cesc? I'd argue no.

I think Luis is suffering from the same problem as Zhirkov to be honest, finding it impossible to dislodge two excellent players (Ashley Cole, arguably the best left back we've ever had, and Malouda at the peak of his form). He's clearly an excellent player and an excellent defender, but those in front of him in the pecking order are so formidable that he doesn't really stand a chance. Azpilicueta is arguably the best full-back in the division (just as Ashley Cole was when Zhirkov was at Chelsea), it's not really any knock on Luis that he can't get into the side.

Maybe all our midfielders will get injured again and we'll end up playing him in the middle with Mikel and Ramires.

Full debut? I know he made one or two subs under RDM but he didn't seem to trust him enough to start him.

Either way, point is Apzi has always been class.

Willian is too old to improve imo. How many players really step up their game that much after 26? He is almost 27 and has yet to show we can rely on him to create when a hazard or fab is absent. He is a great back up, for sure, but we need someone of higher quality to be starting games. We all know about the cuadrado signing, but apart from those two, i think the signings have been good. Salah would be better in the squad than cuadrado in all honesty.

Only if you never saw Graham Wilkins or Dennis Rofe in the number 3 shirt.

Our transfer dealings have been very good overall. Definitely not perfect but as the video with Gary Neville demonstrates we have improved with our dealings over the years and we've adapted to the FFP rules extremely well where some doubt was cast over us a few years back when it was introduced.

Cuadrado concerns me but if he's staying, there can't be any more excuses from him now and he needs to justify the price we bought him for for him to remain in the squad beyond next season.

Matic, Fabregas and Costa have been huge signings. I doubt we would have won the title this year without the three of them in the squad so that in its own right demonstrates that Jose's transfer dealings have been largely positive since his return. I wouldn't call the signing of Willian or Remy 'fantastic' but they've been solid and serviceable players for us nevertheless. Zouma is a fantastic signing because he has so much upside for a young defender and naturally he'll be considered the long-term replacement for Terry when he retires.
