John Stones

Martinez wasn't attacking Chelsea, he is attacking the way the transfer window overlaps into the season, and asking the football authorities to look at it. Regardless of club loyalties, many people would agree with that. Obviously whether that can be changed to fit in with other leagues is another matter.

Yes, we are buying people late into the window, because unless we get real bargains (like Deulofeu for £4m), we generally have to watch every single penny, and a lot of deals don't become viable for us until late into the window. We can't generally say 'add another few million onto the price and get the deal done early'.

So yes, he's criticising the window overlapping into the season whilst still buying players himself late in the window, during that period, but we would always be buying late in the window, with our finances. He's asking for it to be changed, so that when we and other clubs are buying late in the window, it's still before the competitive matches start.

I don't think that's remotely unreasonable, hard to understand or hypocritical. Once again, he specifically didn't attack Chelsea (and journalists were trying to goad him to do just that in his press conference today), he was specifically attacking the way the transfer window is structured.

Yes the bullying comment from peanutheadrammy is laughable.

It's the transfer window. He's a player that is desired. He's been bid on. Who cares what they said about him being not for sale, what if that was a tactic to drive the price up? We step back and a team like United swoop in and make us look complete mugs.

I've got no problem with them knocking us back, but they bought it all into the media, not us.

Quote me so I see it next time pal

They said he wasn't for sale, we kept bidding, eventually so much that he put in a transfer request, if that isn't bullying in football terms then I don't know what is.

Of course in some eyes Chelsea can do no wrong though, there are people at the club who are employed to find out what price teams will accept for players and we shouldn't just be taking random stabs in the dark at it like it's football manager.

We look like proper mugs now, need to leave this one well alone.

Martinez has been moaning about chelsea from day one of the whole saga, whether his latest point is a general one or not, what he said yesterday was more of the same about how nasty cfc dared to make a bid for his player, who is now unsettled...

Point is if roles were reversed, he'd be doing exactly the same as cfc are now....the guy is an idiot, who will never hack it at a big club

Don't think we look like mugs at all...what have we done wrong? We tried to sign a player, rightfully thought he wanted to come to the club but Everton said no...conveniently kenwright doing this just days after Everton fans turn on him over lack of investment and fly a plane with a banner demanding his removal...using stones to save your own skin, nice work

My last word on this....if I was Stone's parents I would be absolutely furious with Martinez and the Everton Board who have effectively blocked the progress of their sons career and limited his earning potential perhaps over the remaining years of his contract, not only in wages but endorsements also.  And I am not pissed that he didn't come here, it could well have been another high profile club trying to buy him, but let's say it was Barcelona or Real, would the response from Everton and Martinez still be a resounding 'No', I very much doubt it, and if it was they are more stupid than I thought, so is there something untoward going on between CFC and Everton where they can't stand to do business with each other, if there isn't, there surely is now.

If I were Stones I would be absolutely pissed towards Everton FC for not giving me the opportunity to play for one of the top clubs in the world, (yes Evertonians Chelsea are on the world stage unlike yourselves.) where I could learn my craft from one of the best managers and best CB's on the planet.

You see these opportunities do not come along every day of the week and it will be interesting to see what effort Stones puts in for Everton against Tottenham, because his head is surely elsewhere at the moment and will be for weeks to come; mine certainly would be.   Clearly he has a weak agent representing him and one of the first things on Stones's agenda after the deadline day, if not before, should be to fire him.

It's not a sad day or a loss for Chelsea, its a sad day for young footballers like Stones and Berahino who want to progress in their careers, become better footballers and learn from the best and ply their trade on the footballing world stage, but their jealous puppet masters hold them to heel, stunt their progress and effectively diminish their earnings which spans only a few years.  It will also be interesting to see how contracts will be crafted in the near future to prevent this type of thing from happening again.

I feel for John Stones, he has been caught up in the darker side of professional football and he will resent Everton and Martinez for a long time to come.

I am all for Stones and Berahino moving onto bigger and better clubs to further their career, but unfortunately neither of them will get as much playing time at the clubs (us and Tottenham) who are trying to sign them.  They are better off playing week in and week out at Everton and West Brom, and then moving to a bigger club where they will get that same opportunity.

Stones won't displace Terry, Cahill, Ivanovic or Zouma for CB duty just as Berahino won't displace Kane, Lamela, Erikson or Chaldi on the attack at Tottenham.

If we're willing to pay almost 40 million for someone they are going to be getting significant game time.

Let's keep in mind that we played Torres over Drogba, Sturridge, Eto'o, Anelka and Ba for 5 years because he was 50 million, regardless of how sh*t he was.

He doesn't have to displace all of them to get regular playing time though does he. Ivan rarely plays at CB anyway, this could in all honesty be JT's last season, depending on how various things pan out.

For me if he signed, him and Zouma would be the future of our central defence, not too distant future either.

Will we go back in 3 years when there's only 1 year left on the contract and it is up for renegotiation?

I'd be surprised if Stones wanted to extend with Everton after this fiasco.

"Chelsea will never be bigger than Everton"...haha. Really? Why is Stones begging to come to Chelsea then? Sure, Everton used to be a big club, but not any more. They've been mediocre for a long time. No league title since 1987, no trophy since 1995. They haven't won in the league at Stamford Bridge since 1994/95...a long time before Abramovich turned up. In fact, it's only 2 league victories at Chelsea since they won the league in 1987. They haven't finished above Chelsea in the league since 1995/96. Woeful.

Confusing saga really imo, it's my belief that although young and without doubt potentially a very good player, the idea that Stones could be the next JT is a bit of a stretch...why because he happns to be English and quite good at his early age would that be a pointer to him becoming the best in the league by far because he plays the same position with the same colour shirt as the man a lot of people think he can emulate?

For me Stones has lost out of this big time, the obvious higher wages, bigger profile and better experience with the likelyhood of CL football and longer runs in competitions and there's also the bigger picture in if he has really got what it takes to be any where near as good as JT the Manager he would be playing under.

Mourinho is a fantastic coach as we all know, yes there's good and bad with the bloke but if I was as CFCCAN mentioned the parents of John stones I would want him to be coached by the best, Jose rekindled JT at his age after he'd been almost written off, got him focused after he suffered at the hands of the media and the fat waiter and is a the best at building a great team with a great defence.

If the boy had a hope of being the next JT, he would have benefitted from Mourinho...can anyone even imagine he'll learn much from Martinez?

I really feel nothing about if he did arrive here as I've got little confidence that he would be anything like as good as JT is now let alone has been for the best part of his playing time here, JT is not only a great defender but a great leader and I don't think replacing him with a good young english player will mean we have magically unearthed another such player.

From what I've seen he wouldn't get in my team ahead of JT, Cahill or Ivan as a CB unless I though I could afford to risk points to try to bring him through, he'd be on the bench for me with games here and there when our defenders were playing like they have at the start of this season which is in no way guaranteed.

Just my take on it and as I say, not bothered at all if he came here or not.

Stones would be in the team for me (ahead of Cahill). If anyone he should be compared to Ricardo Carvalho imo (fwiw I think Zouma is JT's long term successor).

From a tactical perspective I don't think it can be underestimated what a key player Stones may have been for us this year. Gutted, but hey ho - maybe in Jan...

Mersey Millionaires.

where have i heard that before? hmmm

Same with the Red scousers, they won a tonne of stuff when they were able to sign up players with a bigger budget than the rest.  I guess it is just not allowed these days by ourselves, City and PSG etc because there are too many egos getting bruised.

Stones makes a lot more mistakes than Cahill atm and that's with Cahill playing badly, they also have a very similar style of defending to me he's a younger currently worse version of Cahill and will never be a defender like JT, he does however have time on his side and looks to have the potential to be better than Cahill but that is just potential it's anybodys guess how good he will be. For me Zouma is the better prospect out of the 2 but I will admit Stones along side Zouma likes to be a very good potential partnership and they seem to suit each others game. However there are lots of others out there who also suit that partnership, a couple who are currently much better players Varane springs straight into mind there are a couple of young Italian prospects who look more composed Romagnoli for example or there are a couple of our own Youth talent Kalas seem a very suitable partner as well as Christensen admittedly they have a lot of improving to do before they get there, but then again so does Stones.

I'm not fussed ether way with this transfer if we get him that's great for the future, if we don't thats a lot of money saved and there is plenty more fish in the sea.

I think our fans should cheer every time he touches the ball when we play them soon. Since the Everton fans are turning on him, let him know he's welcome here if he can force his way out.

Mark Lawrenson, get in! On Stones, ' He wants to play for a better team. A bigger team. The top team.'

Not sure I would have ever expected Lawro to come down on Everton's side anyway, tbh. ;)
