Agree with all 5 reasons as to why it stopped.

Winning is the main thing, for sure. I just believe with our players (most anyway!), we can formulate a winning system whereby we play with good intent and a solid forward thinking structure. And it can be even more successful than right now where we are grinding results. To do so would need constant work, and bedding in. Which needs to be gradual. Not sure if you watched MNF with Roberto martinez but Jamie Carragher was asking him about when his team gets left open, after pushing FBs high up the pitch. He said, we will concede the odd goal, but every team does. Its a matter of playing to our principles, and trusting that we are good enough, and believing in the system they are playing. I have to agree with him. Of course, against stronger teams, we will have to defend well at times. And deeper. But if in the main we work on the principle to play, push forward and press well (win the ball back high) then I think in time this will be beneficial for the club, both in terms of results and style. Because in time Chelsea will be known for that philosophy.

I wont harp on anymore about this. Everyone has got the jist. One thing I would add is that JT is much more suited to playing with the game in front of him, and with him in the XI we will be more solid with that tactic.

I didn't see MNF with Martinez and Carra but it sounds like it was interesting to hear all the tactic talk.

It would be nice to gradually improve our attacking prowess but whether we do or don't, I'll be watching all the same. KTBFFH!

I am sure everyone would love to see attacking winning football but it does take time to embed into a squad, especially if you our still out to win things. However I did think we saw in the first half of last season that we were making strides to play that way and it was just a shame that half way through the season sh*t hit the proverbial fan and we had to start grinding out results and got us stuck in a bit of a rut when it came to attacking football.

But I thoroughly agree that it would be great to see our team play attacking pressing football weak in weak out but I'm not convinced that we have a squad capable of consistently playing an attacking pressing game and I think it will be very hard to do over a whole season in a very demanding Premier League, a league which is far more demanding and competitive than la Liga, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1. Giving teams like Barca, Bayern, Real and PSG the chance to rest players and play weakened teams and still comfortably win games. Look at how jaded our team looked in January after playing a more expansive brand of football, I'm just not sure we could maintain our performance levels over a full season.

You will get shot down in flames for that sort of comment on here!

Everyone is happy with us nicking 1-0s, having only 30% possesion it seems.

This is what I have a problem with. What games have we ever had 30% possession? Thats not frequent by any means. You make it sound like we are inept. Every once in a while and against certain teams its better to let the game come to you.

The Gerrard slip game is a great example. Some teams thrive on open games. Theres a difference between letting teams hang themselves and playing negative football.

In the end theres only one stat that matters, the score

I really think we need to introduce a festive break like other leagues have during Decembers/January. It would probably give the teams a chance to rest and be less ragged for the remainder of the season.

I'll toss in my opinion that if we are talking entertaining football, I'd rather see our team defending 10 deep in our own box against a team actually trying to attack for most the game with the occasional lightening counter rather than watch our team dominate possession due to the back 4 and the defensive mids passing sideways and backwards for a third of the game, as seems to be the trade mark of what many consider to be beautiful attacking football. Just my two cents when talking about being entertained. One gets the blood going, the other does not.

See mate. I get that and agree 100%. It definitely would be nice, really would be nice.

I guess the free flowing nature of us last season stopped for a number of factors such as:-

1. Injuries

2. Tiredness

3. Suspensions

4. Lack of depth in squad

5. José's tendency to be pragmatic

It seems when it comes to Chelsea we can't sustain free flowing goals, goals, goals football.

Sometimes the team DNA is just one way and it's really hard to break that. I would argue we have

been this way since Jose 1.0 a decade ago.

I'm not sure we will ever be as free flowing as the first part of last season consistently. Whether we have the tools

to play that way or not Josè only cares about winning. Winning in the way he knows best, pragmatic counter attacking

football.

Ancelotti's first season saw us break the record for most goals in a bpl season, Lampard and Drogba scoring close to 50 of them ( and Rooney somehow winning POTS lol).

True but then as soon as he left we reverted to type pretty much.

Ancelotti played a superb brand of football. The board f**ked him over in the end, the never invested properly and signed donkeys like Torres instead of going after class young players.

Ohoh, will there be parties?!

People forget that season also had a bit of a wobble in it, seeing us HAVING to win away at united, and then having to win on the last day to win the title by a point I think it was.

Yeah we blew a huge lead at the top and were barely top at Christmas. We also let United go ahead of us at one stage.

It is my favourite season ever though, the football we played in the second half of that season was phenomenal and winning it by a point was exciting. It was great winning the double but the FA Cup final against Pompey felt kind of hollow which I think was because Frank missed the pen and we really should have won by 5 or 6 that day.

But, but, if we had another break we'd have to put up with more petty squabbling and doom and gloom in this forum that no football brings in July!

For half the season our football was heading in the right direction. Why did we abandon that Philosophy when it was working so well, because we lost one game to Spurs?

I am not happy with that.

Notice philosophy being spelt with a capital P. Brainwashed by LVG Manure fan perhaps?

If not then you are that arsehole BlueDaze.

Does have a very 'not arrogant, just better' ring to it.

I'm not wrong. Everyone who disagrees is just simple minded.

I have to confess that I've got bored with football. There are two reasons I can think of:

1. I've been watching too much of it, e.g. Yawned my way through some of the supposed classic Barcelona/Seville match the other night. Suarez waving an imaginary red had me reaching for the off button.

2. Sorry to say this but Chelsea seem to have become stale and I can't remember the last match I really enjoyed. I'm hoping a longer run with Costa and Hazard playing himself into form will improve things.

Just on point 1, I came home from a stag do on Sunday and was in need of a little afternoon nap. I used the Stoke vs Liverpool match like how I used to use Snooker when it was on TV at night, into bed, volume on really low and off to sleep. Super

It's weird cause lately I've been disinterested in football and I to feel bored. I am abit like this with everything though, I get into stuff so much that eventually I lose interest or a little while. Also with recent things going on in my personal life the importance of it has changed for me.

In the 2010/2011 season I completely lost interest and put it down to the whole Rooney saga and how he got that ridiculous £250k a week contract. I also don't enjoy games as I can't afford to go to matches so I'm stuck watching it on TV or reading reports... it's just not the way to enjoy football. I'm also too nervous to watch our games most of the time and end up pacing in and out of the room. The pressure of winning seems even more apparent with sponsorship deals, TV/CL money etc now-a-days too, where’s the enjoyment factor gone? I like to go to my local conference league games rather than watch any games on TV.

To be honest Gem I am starting to think that the coverage of Football has reached a tipping point.

My Football = a cozy old Will Hay film

Media/Sky/BT Football = a soulless Hollywood blockbuster with lot of car crashes and explosions, instantly forgettable after you leave the cinema/switch channels.

I don't think the football has got worse, in many cases its got better, but the way it is presented and served up to us, is taking all the fun out of it. I hate to sound all "jumpers for goal posts" but the hype is starting to turn me off.

Isolating yourself and becoming disinterested in things you generally love is not ideal.

Sometimes you have to mentally force yourself to get through it.

I'd like football TV coverage to include a "no commentary option" with just the ambient sound of the crowd (so I don't have to listen to the inane twaddle).

I watch on mute. Can't handle most of the commentators I get.

I use the term philosophy because its a key word in football. I like to see teams showing and executing a clear way of playing. Although every team has to defend deep and play on the counter at times, I feel we do it a bit too often. When we are trying to press and go forward, we seem to lack coherency and clear direction. As for BlueDaZe, haven't got a clue what you're on about.

Agree with you Pedro, both re the Winter break and being able to keep it up for a full season. This is why I'm baffled as to why we haven't improved our squad, in order to rest players for certain games. At the mo, JM has around 13-14 players he genuinely trusts. As we saw last year, will struggle to go through a season like that.

Of course the result is most important. I'm trying to look past that though, as its not always reflective of the game.
