Guus Hiddink - New (old) Chelsea-manager

Featured Replies

Not sure why we keep going over old ground re. Jose in this debate...his mistakes and failings have been talked about time and time again...what I'm talking about is Hiddink's failings, which seem to be ignored by a lot of people because he wasn't Jose, when he should be judged just as much as Jose was...sure he didn't create any negative headlines, he didn't create any positive ones either

Because a lot of folk are comparing Guus & Jose this season and even saying we should have kept Jose so just giving a reminder of why we didn't keep him.

Happy to draw a line under it now and move on. Lets just say neither coach lived up to expectations - Season 2015 - 2016 is definitely one to forget.

He fell short of minimum expectation.. top 10 finish and poor run in cup competitions is below expectation.. I don't think he managed to lift up team spirit, sure it got better after jose was sacked but it's almost by default.. Most importantly in term of team performance, his effect was minimum..

Well, he came under difficult situation after all so can't be too harsh but review must be honest without bias.. I can undertstand why he was picked though but if I can rewind, I'd rather the club to save the money and just stick with steve holland as caretaker, yeah hindsight is a wonderful thing i know..

gonna stay at the club as an advisor apparently.

Guus Hiddink will remain as advisor to Chelsea. He said Sunday at the Kees Table on Fox Sports. He would leave at the end of the season at the London club, but do now know yet stay longer in a different role.

Hiddink will give advice to the academy that trains the talents, because he thinks that some things can be improved. For example, the flow of talent to the first team. "You often see that the young players are not always easy to link up with the first team. You have to bring them sparingly, otherwise they will go bankrupt. I have done including Bertrand Traoré and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, but it has often happen. "

Hiddink also would like to recall legends to the club, such as Didier Drogba and Petr Cech. "They have had much impact here. Once they are really finished their playing career, they can be of great value to the club, such as assistant or scout."

Hiddink took over in December as interim coach over from the sacked Jose Mourinho. Which experienced a dramatic season half and stood at the end of the year a few points off the relegation zone. Hiddink managed to lead the tenth, the champion of last year. Next season the Italian Antonio Conte succeeds him as coach.

Well that seems more then a bit silly doesn't it.

Advicer for bringing youths through the ranks and he didn't give one of them a proper chance even when we had nothing to play for.

Seems like more of a "retirement-gift" to me, and that leaves me less then impressed. Don't need too many cooks and strong personalities in the club.

Haha, typical Chelsea give Hiddink a job involving the academy. After what he did at the end of the season he only made things worse. The youth team is already good enough as proven by results, what's Guus going to do? Give Conte his wisdom on how to sub youth players at half time or give them 1min of game time.

He might bring Cech back who has longer playing career left than Hiddink has left in football full stop lol.

So his job will be focusing on the youth players transition to the 1st team, which is absolutely insane.

We had so many dead rubbers at the end of the season and the youth players barely got a sniff.

I'm sure Conte will love having the ex-manager in the background too. Shambles.

I'm just shaking my head at the decisions that the club has made recently. I like Guus and appreciate everything he's done for us but it should have been time to move on from him.

A boys club mentality continues to engulf the club.

Guus will be retired so we needed to give him a job that basically meant we wouldn't have to do anything. Seems like the perfect job under that specification then.

I get a strong feeling that Steve Holland does not want that role. If he wanted to be a manager, I'm sure there would be teams in the lower leagues who would hire him. He had a brief job as head coach (not manager as they had a coach/director of football model) at Crewe Alexandra where his results were fine, but he decided it wasn't for him.

Keeping Guus as an advisor makes sense, but as an academy advisor? That's a head scratcher.

Wonder if Conte is party to this? Guss and Emenalo in the background. Its got disaster written all over it.

I'm pretty sure Guus has the good sense and empathy to not interfere with Conte. If anything, he's more likely to tell the administrators to back off.

I don't think he's a particularly strong personality, and there are many complaints from fans about non-footballing people in the club hierarchy. Despite his obvious decline as a manager, he's still got excellent footballing pedigree and can provide valuable advice imo.

Yeah not like he has decades of experience working with young players.

Oh no, wait, in his temporary spell he didn't play enough kids. More kids than the previous four managers combined, but not enough for my tastes.

Waaa Waaa waa.

Comparing Guus's spell as manager to the last 4 is absolutely pointless, totally different circumstances. Your not even looking at the bigger picture.

The way he used the young players was rubbish. If you think subbing young players at half time helps them then you go with that.

Traore only played at the end because Costa was injured. RLC was no where to be seen for the last 5-6 games. That's great management. With nothing to play for the last 12 games RLC should of been the first name on the team sheet. I tell you what lets get with the classic Mikel and Matic, like we havnt already learnt there s*** together.

Kennedy and Traore could of also got more minutes. Also a young right back at times instead of Ivanovic. Opportunities like this don't come round often specially with teams normally fighting for the prem.

Guus was useless at the end.

is the bigger picture when judging hiddink's suitability to have an informal behind the scenes role at the club

a) his entire career, where he has shown to know a thing or two about football and bringing through young players or

b) the final few months of his career where he was brought in as a troubleshooter in a club with a split / demoralised dressing room?

if it is the latter then yes, I'm not looking at the big picture. I would have liked him to play certain young players a bit more, but I'm realistic. he couldn't have done it LOADS more because it sends a bad message to the first team players and to prospective first team signings. my opinion is if you don't want him here because it could undermine the manager then that is fine. it is a legitimate concern. if you don't want him here because player x didn't start or play in every game once we were out of the running for all competitions then no, I don't accept that. I think it is a completely stupid, snide position to assume.  In my opinion it is an excuse to moan and personally I'm a bit bored of it.

Guus did an okay job in the end. Jose had already made tue damage and the team never recovered to fight for anything really.

Guus gave the youth a chance and that is good. No young player is still not actually any more ready for next term though. Traore and RLC are the players you could see breaking into starting eleven but is Conte really going to use them, time will tell.

Playing youth for just playing youth is stupid. You can say anything about Pato, Remy and Falcao but these three are quality players. Why didn't they get to play? Were they that bad? The age-card works both ways IMO.

Rely and Falcao was mostly injured and Pato was just on loan. I would rather see someone play who might have a future at the club than a loan signing.
