Guus Hiddink - New (old) Chelsea-manager

Featured Replies

It doesn't really say anything. None of the youth players from his time broke in

Something we are in dire need of. If we havent halved the gap from us to 5th or 6th by the end of January the rest of the season needs to be about youth development. Play the big boys in the CL, but once Europe is realistically out of reach the kids need to be featured front and center

Hiddink: "It was important for me I could have one-on-ones with a number of people, there is a lot of work to be done for the near future"

Now all that disappointment and excitement of getting a 2nd win in 8 is over

Pleased that Hiddink is back at the helm as interim,

Done with the drama and polarization of opinions it all caused, just want  to see the team steadily improve form starting on Boxing Day

good luck uncle Guus, make us all proud of our team again please !!

In theory I agree with you, but in practice its not so simple, first of all you can't just play a bunch of kids week in week out and then senior players in the CL. Players do need some consistency. Also blooding like 8 kids is not going to end well.

I do agree that RLC, Kennedy and Traoure should all see many more miniutes

Not true, we won the FA youth cup that year

They were 18 and under and unlikely to break through unless exceptional. I was meaning more the 18 to 21_age group which the majority of young players get the break through at.

I don't think an interim manager is ever gonna give youth a chance. That's a long term plan.

I agree, and we shouldn't expect them too use youth either. Hiddink's job is basically about getting us back on track for the future. I am actually very grateful that he has come in and is going to do the interim job for us once again without anything at the end of it. Obviously he is getting paid nicely, but not many managers would come back twice just to be an interim manager.

Doesnt getting us on track for the future mean using the top youth players? There are no repercussions for Guus if we dont win anything and finish 9th. He's got no future interests sure but he's clearly Romans man and I find it hard to think we'd go on playing the older players when/if we're not able to win trophies anymore. That would be a waste of a season, no youth comes in, no trophies and no managerial continuity

The youth talk is getting so old. The big difference between Chelsea and lets say Arsenal is that we have already 1-2 international level players waiting for their chance if the main man gets injured, Arsenal don't. They buy their best youth from other cities just like Everton bought Stones 2013. We currently have one of the best youth setups in the country.

Guus is here to get us out of relegation and to stabilize the team. If Kenedy or RLC impress him they have a chance to play.

So what part of the youth talk are you fed up with? I dont think anyone is suggesting to play them for the hell of it straight away. Its pretty reasonable to say they should be thrown out there when silverware and a CL place are out of sight however. If we continue down the road we've been going down for 10 years we may as well scrap the academy because its only losing us money.

Traore is a player whom should be getting games, he will be absolute quality in the future. After him RLC and kenedy, then musonda. Give baba more chances and bring back christensen and ake, that would be a solid foundation for the future.

Its no accident that the clubs around the world were the manager took a personal interest in the youth development setup, have seen the best results from their academies. Michels, Cruyff , Ferguson, LVG and Guardiola were all actively involved with youth development alongside their first team duties, they were willing to allow the young players to make mistakes whilst developing knowing in the long run that it would be for the clubs benefit. No one is asking for a whole waft of players to be thrown in but giving a youth team player more than one half when starting should be expected. They learn from playing alongside the established stars, not all will be a success, some will play a couple of times and never seen again. There is though just the chance that you might unearth a potential gem that takes the league by storm, saving the club money that can be used to strengthen other departments. With this in mind I'd hope any new manager is given this brief, yes there is a kitty available for transfers but we do have to use the full resources we have.

Few articles floating about that one of Guus' conditions as Manager is to play more youth.

To what extent I don't know, but the club and manager aren't stupid and I don't think anyone is suggesting to play 8 all at once... But who really knows.  Wouldn't even surprise me if the same team went out and we had even less youth on display boxing day with Ake not being eligible.

Hope RLC + Kenedy feature much more for the next few months

Agreed, in light of how everything has gone down we couldn't have asked for a much better candidate for an interim role. Don't expect him to perform miracles but I'll absolutely back him all the way.

A big problem at Chelsea is that there seems to be a huge gulf between the first team squad and the youth players. This was blatantly evident in the friendly at the end of last season when Chelsea played Sydney FC. Jose brought on a bunch of youth and fringe players like Loftus Cheek and Ake and they looked clueless as to what their role was and where to fit in. Only Boga was the least bit impressive (and I haven't heard of him since). On the limited opportunities this group has had this year in the BPL it's been the same. None of these lads look like they're going to really light up the League. All this is puzzling as these guys are supposed to have been training with the first team squad. It doesn't look like it when they get on the pitch. Maybe they just practice bench-warming. This was the exact opposite at ManU in their heyday under SAF when the young players fitted straight in and looked like they'd been doing it for years.

This needs to change if we're ever going to see any product from the Academy at any stage let alone this season.

I think it's not so much a quality issue, as a confidence one. At Utd under Ferguson, they had some very average youngsters come through, but they knew they would be given a fair chance, and if they made mistakes, it wasn't the end of the world.

As opposed to 45 minutes and then hailed off at HT, never to be seen again, whilst being criticised numerous times in the press by your manager.
