Guus Hiddink - New (old) Chelsea-manager

Featured Replies

So apparently Eddie Newton will continue to be involved with the first team until the end of the season with a view to assist with the younger members of the first team squad.

Not sure exactly what the club thinks it can achieve in six months with regards to youth?

If the goal is to get players such as RLC more first team minutes then the club should stop handing out four year contracts to the likes of Ramires.

The club send out mixed signals with this sort of thing all the time.

My take on that is they are basically using the next 6 months as a scouting mission for our youngsters, which to keep and progress into the first team, which to let go, which to loan etc. Hopefully this is because they want the next permanent manager to integrate the chosen young uns into the first team proper, that will possibly be a big part of his remit.

Gary Neville said that Fergie used to tel the youngsters that they would get a run of 5 games and it didn't matter how they performed. The pressure was off and told them to enjoy it.

Compete difference to how Jose tried to introduce them. He really let the club down on the youth front. He said he would be a failure if the 5 youth players weren't playing for England. Well them 5 players are so far away from the first team, never mind England

I hope that's true for me a few of these youngters deserve a chance in the first team.

I've got plenty of respect for Guus after how well he did for Chelsea in 2009 and the Australian National Team in 2005-2006, but he'll have his work cut out to get these pea-hearts playing to an acceptable standard on a consistent basis.

Short-term this is a good option but it doesn't resolve our long-term issues yet even though there's been hints of Guus being encouraged to play the youth on a more frequent basis.

All the best to him and I'm willing to get behind him because I hold him high regard as a coach and a person despite the general bitterness and resentment I harbour towards those in charge on the board and towards some of the squad players who put in poor efforts under Jose earlier in the season.

It was a pleasure listening to him speaking.

Probably better than a lot of our native English-speaking managers.

Interesting point about having a spine of leaders through the centre of the team who can manage in-game.

This has been one of the problems this with this squad compared to the previous one. Not enough players who really grab hold of the game in bad situations.

Yeah, quite different from hauling off a player after being subbed in at half time in a meaningless friendly

Id like to see this quote. I read one of his books but I find it hard to imagine he's actually given them 5 games

I'm struggling to find a written quote as I think he mentioned in a MNF discussion.

Ive read one of his books and I do remember something similar about how he liked to give them chances with no fear of repercussions but 5 games seems like too much to ask of any manager

Came across well I thought...won't be getting many negative headlines from him...you just know the media will start missing Jose soon, unless he ends up at old trafford

I don't think Guus will use too many young players. His remit will probably be to steady the ship then get it going forwards and try to progress in Champs Lge. Whilst Jose was here I firmly believed top 4 was impossible, now I'm not so sure. There's not a great deal of quality above us, if we can start firing on all cylinders then it just might be possible.

I admire your optimism and hope you're right I just worry there's been to much damage done

I don't see Gus making too many changes system and tactic wise, his main task is really to get players playing again, rediscover the confidence and flair. We aren't going to win matches with some fancy formations and super tactics, it's about getting back to what we were capable of last season. I think he will go about his business quietly, don't expect some cool quotes or harsh words on players in public. I think he will give the RLC etc more of a chance than Jose, he's the boss' man.

I would also like to see what traore has to offer, as well as RLC. If the established players still aren't performing I hope he gives other players more than fifteen minutes here and there.

It was quite refreshing to have a press conference without any hostility in it.  The press asked their usual questions, probing for something to incite a reaction, but Guus gave them nothing.  Merely, he replied in a respectful manner, and answered the questions directly.

I did pick up that it sounds like Youth could be a part of his tenure, but not until we steady the ship.

I think it'll be interesting to see what team he puts out.  More of the same?  I don't think so.  Right back's at Left back?  I hope not.  Formation?  Wasn't he keen on 4-3-3 in the past?

Jose perhaps let the fans down in that regard, but I don't think he let the "club" down.

Ive stated a few times that we have seen the "club" force players on managers and even appear to force play time for those players despite their form..... to my knowledge, none of those players have been youth.  I don't know about directly, but (in my opinion) through actions the "club" has sent a clear message that youth development takes a back seat to first team success.

When success is demanded as it is at CFC it makes the promotion of youth, at best, a very distant second thought/goal.

On that premise, perhaps we are seeing a rare opportunity for youth at CFC in the Roman era.

No, an interim manager is nothing new here and yes I still believe that success is firmly goal #1.....but, in previous interim situations the qualifications for success were much higher expectations than now.  This is an assumption but I feel it's safe to assume the expectations of Hiddink in this interim role will be vastly reduced from the expectation of his first tenure here or that of even RDM, Grant or Rafa.  Think it'd be damn near miraculous to finish this season as we did back then with Hiddink (FA cup, top 4 and CL semi's) or the other interims.

So while I firmly believe first team success is still #1, the level of that expected success might now be low enough that goal #2 (assuming that it is the promotion of youth)  is now within touching distance of goal #1.  That goal # 1 and 2 can be achieved at the same time as they are now on the same path and no longer is the manager faced with a fork in the road where the path to youth promotion could barely be seen.

Perhaps, after all, Jose will leave a legacy of youth....but in that unique Chelsea fashion where an interim gets the job done.

and no, this is no attempt to give Mourinho any credit if Hiddink brings youth through.  Merely that it will of been Mourinho's (and others, to me) failings that created the environment for the youth to get a chance to succeed.  If Hiddink succeeds with our youth, he will merit all the credit that any first team manager can claim in that regard.

Thats always the problem when you fly through managers like we have. Theres no reason to gamble with young players. Thats one reason I was disappointed to see Jose go. Would the lease have been longer if RLC or Traore were starting games? I dont think so
