The regret thread

On a different note, I think we should have moved heaven and earth earlier to retain Zola.

If the rumours are true roman nearly did, was supposed to have tried to buy cagliari so he could get him back to chelsea. Zola and his bloody word, damn him for being nice and a gentlman ha ha....

Chris Sutton, I remember being excited as a kid, given his reputation at Blackburn and....oh dear.

I was on a European tour holiday when we signed him and there was another Chelsea fan on it. We were sat in a pub in Germany somewhere where he phoned his dad who told him we had signed Sutton. We spent all night talking about how he would fit in, best partner for him etc. Bugger.

Going off topi here an I might be wrong but didn't Zola score the goal against Liverpool that won us the match, got us 4th place and champions league for the next season which was suppose to have been a big decision in Roman buying Chelsea that year. Anyway my main regret was mata going would have been cool to see him William and hazard behind costa

In no particular orders:

Hire Scolari. After coming so close to win some major honours in previous season, instead of strengthening the team and hire a proper manager, we went for someone with no experience at club level. If anyone read Drogba's book, the Scolari fellow had no idea what he was doing.

Fire Carlo. Fire a manager who finished second in the league ( pretend his first season didn't happen) was just madness, set us back another 6 months.

Not playing Crespo enough. He was no flop, just neither managers gave him the proper runs in the team. Crespo VS JFH and Mutu was no contest, Tickerman just tinkered too much and never gave him the games he needed. One year wasted on loan, after winning the league the following year, we some how decided to let him go, when he still had plenty to offer.

Signing players a couple of years too late, see Sheva, Torres, Falcao..

Well I thought it was well known that he had home life issues and he or his wife hated england and wanted to go back to italy

Situation regrets....our missing CL trophies.

No players are to blame but when you come so close it's hard not to think of what could have been.

JT's slip and the way we were robbed in that Barca semi final - I think we would have been too much for United in the final.

Going back to 1977, the way Eddie Mac was allowed to leave the club having got us promotion and looked like he, if given time and backing could build a really good Chelsea team.

Not giving more game time to players like Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Bertrand Traore and Kenedy in what has been a disastrous season. Delle Alli has come out of nowhere and is one of Tottenham's key players in a season that could push them towards a Premier League title. The kind of faith he has received is the same kind of faith our youngsters should be getting, especially when some of the older more experienced players have been pretty awful throughout the whole season so far.

I don't even think it would be a risk playing them, i don't see how they could be worse than some of the players that have played so far this season. I thought this was going to be Loftus-Cheek's breakthrough year, he has barely even played though.

That maybe true, but De Gea's GF wanted to go back to Spain and somehow they still convinced him to stay. The other thing is neither managers played him enough, Raneri was too busy tickering his team to make sure JFH/Mutu are happy, Jose was never bold enough to play with 2 strikers consistently.

De Gea HAD to stay back because Madrid screwed up. And United forced him to sign a new contract or he would have stayed on the bench in a Euro year. I loved Crespo and he was the reason I started following Chelsea. But he was always frustrated in London. But he always played well when called upon so I doubt that had anything to do with his decision.

The biggest regret is most definitely allowing Cech to leave for Arsenal. I fully agree that he was entitled to move to anywhere he wished after the outstanding service he provided the club, but allowing anyone leave for Arsenal borders on heresy.

I wish I could wish him all the best for his career, but I hope he fails miserably now.

I was gutted when Ray Wilkins was sold to Manchester United, who promptly turned him into a crab. Top attacking midfielder when he was our captain aged 18 and scoring 8-10 goals a season.

Crespo, for me, is the best striker I have ever seen play live. Such wonderful movement, technique  ... and instinct for goals.

Selling Robben was a pity as well.

Speaking or Wilkins,  I regret when he got the sack out of nowhere as Carlo's #2 when the team looked like it would walk another title and give the fans a second set of back to back titles.  Not only that, but winning titles with some of the most beautiful football seen at this club and the highest scoring team this league has ever seen.  The team mysteriously lost form and struggled to finish second whilst Carlo got sacked despite never finishing below 2nd on the table (albeit with disappointing European adventures).  Still not aware of the real reason he got sacked (Wilkins).  I am aware of why Carlo did but feel it was unfair considering the circumstances the board put him in with a weakened team then meddling into how he ran the team right after winning the double....

It's a very weird, murky one.

Throw in the fact that Wilkins was initially replaced by a scout on the bench (a Mr Emenalo, wonder what happened to him) whose last coaching assignment was an under-12s girls team in Tuscon, Arizona.....before Paul Clement was appointed to the position.

Big regret.

All this nonsense how lukaku, de bruyne and mata didn't want to fight for their place is a load of rubbish. Mourinho had his favourites, and sold the players that didn't like rotting on the bench. These players had the quality, yet were unfairly not given a chance.

This right here is one of the reasons why Mourinho cannot sustain success with a team for more than a couple of years.

Azpi is probably someone that you'd consider a Jose favourite, even keeping out Luis and Rahman who were established left-backs.

Yet he got fewer chances than De Bruyne in that first season, but when he did (in the league cup I think) he took his chance with both hands. Jose isn't as black and white as some people say.

Tell that to a succession of decent enough left backs who have had to watch the best right back play in their position ... :)

I think one reason Costa was so disgruntled and distracted in the first half of the season is that he was angry and isolated at seeing his best mate Luis sold back to Atletico ... having been marginalised the previous season ...

We'd have been so much better as a unit with square pegs in square holes ...
