August 26, 20169 yr ^ Not the greatest lover of stats to prove a players worth, Baba reputedly had good stats but anyone watching him good see he was defensively poor even in his Budesliga days. Truth is if he fits the team and does a good job for us, he will be judged soley on that. Only question I would ask though, if this is the player Conte wanted why the f*ck wasn't he signed before the season started? I'd hazard a guess he is about fifth down the line of targets after all our other efforts have failed. After this window questions have to be asked about first team recruitment, maybe an overall in that department is required.
August 27, 20169 yr it would be interesting to see how current posters would react if azpilicueta was signed this window instead of a few of seasons back. i didn't know much at all about azpi but he's turned out well. we can't control the signings/sales so it's the board and conte's who work together to figure out what's best and we as fans put our trust in them. It's a bit different though. Azpilicueta wasn't crap at his other clubs like this guy has been.
August 27, 20169 yr It's a bit different though. Azpilicueta wasn't crap at his other clubs like this guy has been. Alonsos been good at Bolton, Sunderland and Fiorentina.
August 27, 20169 yr Alonsos been good at Bolton, Sunderland and Fiorentina. I didn't think he was that great at Bolton or Sunderland, looked pretty average from what i can remember.
August 27, 20169 yr I didn't think he was that great at Bolton or Sunderland, looked pretty average from what i can remember. I see he won Boltons player off the season while he was there and apparently played a big part in Sunderland staying up. I dont think he was crap there. His form at Fiorentina has been very good too. A few judges have him as one of the better LBs in the league. If Conte wants this guy im more than happy for him to join us.
August 27, 20169 yr Hmmm... Was being linked with Barca. That's something at least. Remember thinking he was a very average (weak?) defender for Bolton. Few years ago, now though. He would at least add some extra height. Never a bad thing when it comes to set peices. Azpi Zouma De Vrij? Alonso ^ The backline?
August 27, 20169 yr It's a bit different though. Azpilicueta wasn't crap at his other clubs like this guy has been. You've watched him regularly I assume ?
August 27, 20169 yr I didn't think he was that great at Bolton or Sunderland, looked pretty average from what i can remember. At Bolton he was a youngster still learning the game, first time out of Spain, in a new country and league, and done well there, got voted Bolton's POTY, and then got signed by Fiorentina. They loaned him out to Sunderland so he could play regularly and continue his development, and again done very well for Sunderland, their fans love him and Sunderland were desperate to keep him after his loan but Fiorentina wanted to see Alonso in pre-season he impressed and now is one of the best LBs in Serie A. August 27, 20169 yr Author cant say im excited if we got him right now, but i'll try to reserve my judgement after two or three games
August 27, 20169 yr Compared to Ivanovich at RB I'd take an asthmatic donkey with cataracts and a club foot...sorry hee-haw gets me going... Edited August 27, 20169 yr by doctorblue
August 27, 20169 yr Its funny because i guarantee if Alonso had never played in England before and instead had spells at teams like Osasuna and Getafe before going to Fiorentina then people would be excited about this transfer.
August 27, 20169 yr I didn't think he was that great at Bolton or Sunderland, looked pretty average from what i can remember. I watched a lot of him at Bolton and of Bolton in general when they were still in the league and he was pretty good towards the end of his time there. No idea about Sunderland, heard good things about his time at Florentina but only saw him play twice and one of those occasions he was at centre back in a back 3. August 27, 20169 yr why after spending over 15mil on Luiz another 20mil on baba and if this player is secured for the reported fee of 17mil why the hell didn't we sign Luke shaw. At the rate of getting through left backs we will probably spend 100 million in the next ten years were as shaw would have cost 3 million a season.
August 27, 20169 yr why the hell didn't we sign Luke shaw. We tried, he didn't want to join us. From yesterday's Guardian interview: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/aug/26/luke-shaw-manchester-united-fit-happy Mourinho, he says, has changed the entire atmosphere within the club and the admiration is mutual given this was the manager who tried, unsuccessfully, to gazump United’s initial £27m deal for Shaw and sign him for Chelsea instead. “We’ve had a little joke about it,” Shaw says. “He’s a cool manager. ‘Why didn’t you come?’ he wanted to know. I just felt I had more opportunity of first-team football here.

From yesterday's Guardian interview: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/aug/26/luke-shaw-manchester-united-fit-happy The club probably wanted to send him out on loan. I can't believe they wouldn't have told him he wouldn't have been first choice since we didn't have a left back. Maybe it could be a blessing in disguise if we don't get a left back in and have to use someone like jay de silva if we get Injuries. The kid looks like he could be the left back for the next 10 years or more if given a chance.

August 27, 20169 yr Gutted we sold Felipe Luis tbh. Don't think we could have had a better back up LB.
August 27, 20169 yr Marcos Alonso... Desperation signing. Not bad, but it puts Luis, Ake and Baba transfer under terrible light.
August 27, 20169 yr "The club probably wanted to send him on loan". Just wow, can our board ever do right? Well if the young lad didn't think he would get first team football here after probably meeting with the club what else were they going to do with him? Sign him for 30mil and have him occasionally on the bench. The transfer policy the last two summers have been a shambles.

When he joined Utd, he was asked why he didn't join the club he always supported and he said he and his family weren't convinced when they had a meeting with Jose when he was Chelsea's manager. Now same Jose coaching him at Utd, he's singing a different tune, the bi-polar twat. Edited August 27, 20169 yr by summer is coming

Was harsh on him but I don't think it was the board's fault he decided to join Utd. Surely one of the board members wouldn't have called he and his family into his office and told them Shaw wouldn't start or would be going on loan.
