August 29, 20169 yr NOt much point basing it on transfer values now. If we signed a player for £12m a year ago it is likely people would have assumed the player was OK but not great. £23m is last year's £12m
August 29, 20169 yr Yep, players values are ridiculous this year so they might as well just be completely ignored.

How much did payet cost last season, he would now likely walk in to any team in the league. At 23 was drogba even playing top level football? Who gave a sh*t about vardy or marhrez or kante 2 years ago... Not saying this fella will be in any way as good as those but I'm not going to judge him on the price tag. Ive never seen him play, never seen the RR character either (that I have taken notice) but last year didn't we buy the best left back or there about a in the bundas league only to send him back on loan ?? I'm just happy we are being pro active in an area we are week

If we signed a player for £12m a year ago it is likely people would have assumed the player was OK but not great. £23m is last year's £12m We have no leverage, because we've left it so late, and we're desperate for a left-footed defender because we're so woefully short. Batshuayi was a coveted player, unlike this guy, he was one of the most promising strikers in Europe and proven in France. Kante was the best player in the Prem last season. Alonso will cost almost as much. I cannot believe the stupidity of our board, I mean we've made this mistake once before, have we not? I'm not saying he's a bad player, I've never seen him, but I'm pretty damn sure he wasn't high on our list of targets, otherwise we wouldn't have left it so late. Will he be better than Ake? Will he be better than Bertrand or Van Aanholt for that matter, and let's not mention Luis. The only thing I feel pretty certain of is that he'll be better than Baba, who cost £20m last summer if I remember rightly, or close enough. I feel pretty sure Fiorentina can't believe their luck. It's starting to make Arsenal's purchase of Mustafi look cheap. Mustafi is younger and a current German international. This is a lot of money we're paying, for somebody without a fraction of the pedigree. Yup, he's a LB and he can play CB, just like Ake, so in a sense I'm glad we've got him, because we desperately needed someone, anyone, but will we see Dave on the right and this guy on the left, or will he just be cover, in which case it's mission failed I'm afraid, as far as I'm concerned anyway. It's so frustrating because without Europe we've been handed a serious advantage in the title race, but this signing doesn't tell me our team has been upgraded, although I hope I'm wrong. I suspect there was a meeting, we had to have a LB Conte said, this guy was attainable and adequate, so we went for him, for no other reason than we were absolutely desperate, we simply couldn't go into the season without getting somebody. Hopefully I'm wrong about this but I doubt very much Marcos Alonso will be our LB for years to come. That's just me adding two plus two and maybe coming up with five. As I say I've never seen him play. Maybe Conte's a big admirer and wants him on the left, but all the signs tell me he's been signed as a squad player, rather than with the belief he's the man we need to solve our problems.

August 30, 20169 yr Fabrizio Romano ?@FabrizioRomano 6h6 hours ago Marcos Alonso has agreement for his contract with Chelsea; but talks between clubs are still ongoing. #CFC #transfers Edited August 30, 20169 yr by pacquiao
August 30, 20169 yr from a fiorentina fan: " He is really good and still young. Has experience in the Premier League but matured as a defender in the Serie A. He has played LWB for us and was really good - he is big, has pace and provides great assists with his left foot. This past weekend he played CB and did really well since he is so tall and physical also. Conte knows what he is doing when buying in Serie A, especially defenders. I will miss him"
August 30, 20169 yr From the Fiorentina SBN page: Quote We're all familiar with Marcos Alonso. A few of us tolerate him. Many of us hate him. Most of us think he's, eh, just fine. As a versatile defender who has some very obvious strengths and even more obvious weaknesses, he's the definition of a capable but forgettable squad player: occasional brilliance, occasional catastrophe, and a persistent failure to capture the hearts and minds of the fanbase. In short, he's not the sort of player you expect a mega-rich team to make a mega-rich bid for. And yet, here we are. No, dear reader, it's not a fever dream. According to various media outlets in Italy and the UK, Chelsea have made a €25 million bid for Marcos #*&%ing Alonso. In fairness, Chelsea don't really have any leftbacks on the roster--Cesar Azpilicueta can fill in there, but that's pretty much it--and this late in the window, one has to make a big offer to pry a decent player away from a club. Alonso is also familiar with the Premier League after excelling for Bolton, and he is very handsome, but paying €25 million for him seems like a Bebe-level exercise in absurdity. Oh, and while we're speaking of absurdity, here's another fun little nugget: Fiorentina may not let him go. That's right, a player who's routinely exposed in defense and can look helpless going forward apparently isn't worth approximately 0.9 Miralem Pjanices. Sure, it'd be tough to find a quality replacement this late in the window, and unproven veteran Hrvoje Milic is the only other leftback on the roster, but holding out for €30 million (the number Corvino's reportedly angling for) takes a heap of chutzpah. Sure, he looks this good in a highlight video, but, c'mon, it's Marcos. For the record, Alonso has made 85 appearances for Fiorentina, notching 5 goals, 7 assists, 17 yellow cards, and a red card. 4 of those goals and 3 of those assists came last season, which was his finest in purple. As a hardworking, functional player who's a genuine threat at set pieces, you can see why Chelsea might want him and why the Viola would want to keep him. But when you look at the numbers being thrown around, this becomes less of a transfer rumor and more of a Samuel Beckett gag. http://www.violanation.com/fiorentina-transfer-rumors-news-reports/2016/8/29/12685468/chelsea-want-to-pay-a-lot-of-money-for-marcos-alonso Edited August 30, 20169 yr by footballoholic
August 30, 20169 yr Must admit I dont know that much about him... reading on wiki Anyone know anything else about the outcome of that crash? Personal life[edit] Alonso's grandfather, Marcos Alonso Imaz, played eight years with Real Madrid's first team. His father, Marcos Alonso Peña, played several seasons in Spain's top flight, most notably for Atlético Madrid and FC Barcelona, and both represented Spain at senior level.[15] On 2 May 2011, Alonso was arrested following his involvement in a car accident in Madrid. He was the driver of a car that collided with a wall, killing one of the passengers, a 20-year-old woman.[16] He is alleged to have been over the legal alcohol limit for driving.[17]
August 30, 20169 yr I know the comments aren't promising but he could be their Mikel for all we know. Might turn out to be a good player and he still has room to improve at his age.

It's bad enough, we've got our own Mikel, we don't need other teams dumping their Mikels on us, there's only so much a CFC fan can take.
August 30, 20169 yr To be fair, we could do with a player who has Mikel's loyalty, not someone who has to be talked in to staying each season.
