August 30, 20169 yr Author based on the fact that fiorentina fans doesn't rate him and currently laughing at us for spending that much money on him you can defend him all you want, i'm fixed with my low expectation of him, like i said before if he can prove me wrong then good, but as of right now i'm expecting him to be nothing more than a squad player Edited August 30, 20169 yr by havelschayes

August 30, 20169 yr I know it was a long time ago he played for Sunderland but my Sunderland supporting mate said he'd be a great signing for us and thinks he'll thrive at a big team.

August 30, 20169 yr Is there any chance fans will wait until hes played at least a dozen games before deciding its a terrible signing etc?

August 30, 20169 yr Seems like a perfect addition to a 3-5-2 formation for next year. Conte seems very happy to have his fullbacks attacking and linning down the oppositions wingers deep. This signing has Contes fingerprints all over it

If we signed a player for £12m a year ago it is likely people would have assumed the player was OK but not great. £23m is last year's £12m @barak81@dkw @bjd I disagree with this quite strongly. if you are a £30m player agents will know what the going rate for your wage should be. yes, the new TV deal has inflated the market quite a bit, but I think more than ever we should err on caution- this club has a history under abramovich of buying players and handing out huge wages, which consequently commits us to (to them for) the length of their contract. sheva, veron, crespo, torres, cuadrado etc etc are players who, for one reason or another, didn't work out and then we were saddled with their wages and unable to sell them. so we were hit 3 times; not getting the level of performance we paid for, being saddled with a percentage of their wage when they were out on loan, being unable to recoup money through a transfer because the buyer couldn't match the wages paid. I don't believe that wages haven't inflated in line with transfer fees so we need to be extremely careful. elsewhere in the market we have seen that you can still sign high quality players for around what we're rumoured to be bidding for alonso. I don't want us to overspend on players who are seen as a 'punt'. p.s. like most of the people on here I've not seen much of alonso. I can ignore all of those testimonies from posters on that fiorentina message board because, frankly, who knows how good a judge those people are? if they are as hysterical as some people on here then they should be ignored. so I'm a bit queasy with siding with some of those hysterical people on this one. but as I say, I do think that IF this is a last minute gamble then it is fair for people to be concerned right? we shouldn't have to be enthused just because it is a new signing... obviously certain people are willing him to be a bad signing to fit their agenda, but hand on heart I'm not doing that. taken in totality though, how late we were linked / bid for him, his lack of international experience, a fairly unremarkable club CV, the suggestion that he's not the quickest (true also of forum darling ricardo rodriguez, mind), the absolute lack of any expert witness suggesting this is even a decent deal for us... I don't see how anyone, unless they've seen him often, can say they feel positive about this transfer. we need one or two defenders, true, but they can't be literally anyone surely? obviously the idiots will be waiting with baited breath for the first mistake to come so they can call him awful, but even in the real world I don't see why I should feel any confidence in this transfer. I suspect we're getting an average (relative to our ambition) player and we're paying much more than we should for the privilege. what we need, IMO, is someone who can put bran out of the side AND do it on the strength of more than being 25 years old and still being able to run. I'm not even completely sure he'll do more than sit on the bench. can anyone reassure me that isn't the case? Edited August 30, 20169 yr by g3.7
August 30, 20169 yr Why i like the deal - it's simple, It feels like it's conte's target (I guess we will find out if he actually plays) in the few games i have seen so far it seems that conte is trying to increase the number of bodys we get in the box on the attack (thank g-d) and also increase the number crosses coming in to the box - I have no evidence through stats to back that up, just the way it feels. This signing seems to tick the box of getting the ball in to the box more. Also he seems to be an athaletic hard working defender who is going to get up and down. Additionally If it means Azpi moving out to the right and Ivan taking a step back in to a more squad focused role then it shows awareness on the part of conte, something lack from both Jose and Guss last season with regards to the big rightback blind spot
August 30, 20169 yr I really like players who work on themselves and become from being ""kinda-talented" to "big players". I really hope he will work his ass off and show that he is capable of reaching new heights with our club. PS: There are a lot of such things in other sports as well - such as hockey or American "football"

August 30, 20169 yr @barak81 well you're definitely right about the style- it appears to be all patterns and 'set pieces' in open play designed to get in behind on the flanks. already you can see how wide matic and oscar are and how rarely they pass to one another (or directly to the striker). so a left footed fullback on the left would help- azpilicueta is definitely getting forwards more for example. I read 'pep confidential' earlier this year (about guardiola's first season at bayern, which I recommend) and he was obsessed with creating a style that ended with the wingers either crossing or shooting and it looks like conte wants to do something similar. but my reservation isn't the type of player alonso is. it's whether he's good enough. so far the only pluses I'm sure he offers is a left foot, versatility and he's played in england before.
August 31, 20169 yr Just followed Chelsea on Twitter, it's safe to say he is a Chelsea player now! Very happy with this!
August 31, 20169 yr @g3.7 the truth is we don't know if he's good enough, most on this forum don't. There are hysterical reactions based on little to nothing , he could be the new del Nono or the new petrescu that's kind of what's exciting. As I pointed out earlier, if we had brought kante for 5 million before last season people on here would have had a very similar reaction . he could be a steaming pile of sh*t but I'll reserves judgement till I see him regularly. but the point remains it seems to be a signing with a plan behind it and that in its self is a step forward from last years debacle

August 31, 20169 yr Confirmed by some sources. So two deadline-day deals. Two defenders. Well...on the team sheet at least
August 31, 20169 yr http://en.violachannel.tv/breaking-detail/items/alonso-completes-chelsea-switch.html The confirmation on Fiorentina webpage.
August 31, 20169 yr All I have to say is that Conte probably watched every single Fiorentina match last season leading up to Italy team selection for Euro. If Conte wants him he's probably a quality player who fits what he wants.
