August 14, 20232 yr Quite surprised how quickly this has come about. No loan fee apparently ... Assuming Lukaku and Ziyech leave soon as well, this would leave Chilwell as the only player left in the squad that Roman paid a fee for ! Quite incredible transformation of almost the entire playing staff ... certainly unprecedented at any big club I would think ?
August 14, 20232 yr Author This makes no sense from a Chelsea perspective. Now we have to sign ANOTHER keeper. And then we still might get Kepa back in the summer if RM don't want him, and we'll be stuck with 3.
August 14, 20232 yr Surely there has to be a loan fee otherwise wtf is the point. Real madrid wont want him once their number one is back so its not leading to a permanent transfer.
August 14, 20232 yr We had both Bayern and Real bidding for the guy and we end up getting zero loan fee and zero obligation to buy, for our first choice keeper. Christ almighty. Sheer incompetence.
August 14, 20232 yr Even if there is no loan fee, Real Madrid will be paying his wages of course. Probably a fair bit of money saved there if you get a cheap goalie for free. Pochettino might think he's not someone you want part of the group and then you might want to get rid of that player, even if its a financially poor deal. Personally, if a player refused to be subbed off in a game, I'd never play him again. Can't have players with that attitude if you want to build a good team or a dynasty.
August 14, 20232 yr Really weird transfer this is if there's no loan fee and no replacement lined up.

August 14, 20232 yr Perhaps they consider Bergstrom is ready to be #2 ? Or even #1 if Sanchez continues like he started LOL

August 14, 20232 yr I don't see anything about a loan fee (not mentioned) in the Madrid sport newspapers (As, Marca) but As mentions that there's no option to buy. In any case, we're removing a hefty salary from the books for this season.

Would have been nice to offset that at least partially with some sort of loan fee.

August 14, 20232 yr And by the way, why exactly did we sell Mendy? How is Sanchez considered a better GK than him? I am confused.

Sanchez has resale value, would be happier fighting for number 1 spot, and wanted to be here. I don't think I could easily say whether Sanchez or Mendy is the better keeper. Both seem about par to me
August 14, 20232 yr I reckon with the haste that this was pushed through there was a money stumbling block for the Caicedo deal and that removal of £10m of wages fixed it, hence why we have moved as quickly as this.

Both seem about par to me When you look at the amount of howlers Sanchez produced last season Mendy`s suddenly look much less problematic. In fact Sanchez seems to struggle in the same areas Mendy struggled in. Passing the ball, decision making when leaving his line resulting in penalties or easy goals, random lapses in concentration. August 14, 20232 yr No loan fee is a bit strange but good to get his huge wages off the bill for a season, I’d bring in someone like Keylor Navas for a season until we can find a more permanent alternative.
