Selling Kepa in this window makes perfect sense and is in line with the boards strategy of selling players with 2 years left on their contract. We don't have time, our season starts tomorrow. What's the plan, to sacrifice the first month? Those points could mean everything by the end of the season. Who are we even going to sign now? It's not like a new 1st choice goalkeeper has been the priority in this window, so it will be rushed and not well thought out.

I'm pretty certain Sanchez was going to be our number 1 within a few weeks. He wasn't signed to be a back up.

With a 50% reduction in wages and earning what a keeper at that level should be earning. Reckon we'll get a stop gap in the meantime and analyze the situation next summer. We wanted to sell Kepa and sign a proven world class keeper 2. We failed to find a buyer 3. We pivoted to signing a keeper that could be better than Kepa and will review next year. Sanchez is cheap, known to our team. 4. Courtois did his ACL and Madrid came calling. Getting Kepa off our books is critical to all of this. I imagine we might look for a relatively cheap number 2, put faith in Sanchez and then revisit next summer.
August 12, 20232 yr I can't believe there's people in here that have watched Kepa for 6 years and still think he's better than Sanchez. He has been an astronomical flop for us, the fact that we've managed to get him off our books is miraculous.

Everyone will know we are desperate and bump up the prices for any GK we look at by about 500% There's a simple solution to that. There's a 3x UCL winning keeper avaliable for a short term deal, get him and reaccess next summer. Worst case he will prove to be past it and Sanchez will prove not to be good enough for a team with the aim to eventually win the title (which we already know is the case with Kepa anyway) and in the meantime our recruitment team have 10 months to find a perfect long term fit going forward. If he is better than Kepa we are fine. Kepa's biggest problem in Prem is his lack of height. Otherwise he is a good keeper. If he wasn't Real and Bayern would look elsewhere.

Otherwise he is a good keeper. If he wasn't Real and Bayern would look elsewhere. Sanchez's distribution is 'good enough'. I am more concerned on how Sanchez commands his box. Claiming 6% of the crosses he faced in the 2022-23 Premier League. Kepa claimed just 3.5% of his, and his desire to remain rooted to his line contributed to Chelsea’s struggles defending set pieces. At different stages of his Brighton career he also impressed as a sweeper-keeper and as a shot-stopper from both short and long range. https://theathletic.com/4764801/2023/08/11/sanchez-kepa-chelsea-goalkeepers/ It seems like if Sanchez is back to his best than Kepa will look even worse.
August 12, 20232 yr who will play in goal tomorrow? bit weird to sell your number 1 1 day before the first game of the season?
August 12, 20232 yr This is the happiest transfer for me. So glad Kepa is about to be loaned out. One of the worst signings at Chelsea

August 12, 20232 yr I think Rob Sanchez will calm you down a bit. But the bloke has not played a game - not even a friendly - for six months.

Madrid wanted the loan without the option to buy but Chelsea and Kepa are insisting on the option to buy to be included. It is also to be decided whether they’ll pay an extra fee to Chelsea additional to paying Kepa’s wages.
