RIP Peter Bonetti

Saw him play against us many times down the years. If memory serves, Tommy Docherty wanted to play Alex Stepney and Peter Bonetti in alternate games, like England did once with Shilton and Clemence. Matt made a bid and Stepney joined us.

The Cat was a great nickname for him, he was quick off his line, agile, and got his hands to shots that he had no right to. I remember Denis Law shaking his head in frustration after seeing Bonetti claw a sure goal out of the top corner. I think he was unfairly blamed by the press for the loss to West Germany in Leon whilst Alf Ramsey avoided criticism. oh well. water under the bridge and I'm sad to learn of his death as all true football fans should be. RIP.

Thank you for your generous comments mate.

A sad farewell to a true Chelsea legend, a great player and a great man. The Cat was between the sticks when I first went to the Bridge, and I'm fairly sure that I would have been there for his final appearance several years later.

Look closely and you'll see him in the following image, for what was one of the scandalously few times he was selected for England. The same can be said for Ossie, who is in the back row in the right of the motor.

One of my first childhood heroes. Too many memories of great saves to single out a particular one, however, saves against West ham in a 5-5 belter at the bridge in 1966 and against Sheff Wed in the FA cup the following season spring to mind. A legend in the true sense of the word and a thorough gentleman on and off the pitch. rest well Peter and thank you for your service, love and loyalty to Chelsea FC and football in general. R.I.P Sir Peter.

Best keeper I ever saw and a lovely man. Had the pleasure of chatting to him, Paddy Mulligan and Ossie in 2005 when I picked up a centenary shirt and got it signed. The Cat was the inspiration in me becoming a keeper, I even bought his green gloves! The man was Chelsea through and through, he will be missed.

On 27 January 1971 a Rangers/Celtic team played a Scotland 11 to raise money to assist the survivors and families of victims of the Ibrox disaster on 2 January. The Rangers/Celtic team had three guest players one of whom was Peter. Charlie Cooke played for the Scotland 11. Some great players on both sides. Must have been a very emotional game to play in. Does anyone know if Peter was invited to play or did he offer his services?

Bloody hell, that 5-5 draw.   Bonetti made one save where he almost looked like he was bent in half as he clawed the ball out from under the crossbar.

An old West ham fan I know still talks about that game and Bonetti's performance that day...

Never saw him play, as a little to young, but as a young child through the 70's and early 80's and being born into a Chelsea family that team of late 60s early 70s was always talked about, remember Chelsea were sh*t in my young childhood, so that team was so revered, and the cat was iconic, when a young lad like most I wanted to be a centre forward, but one Christmas got yellow Bonetti gloves with the B on the back, and that changed everything and I took up Goalkeeping.

Remember late 70's out shopping with my mum and Dad in Worthing and as they looked in a shop window a couple next to them started talking, my mum and dad looked a bit Star struck it was Peter Bonetti, he use to live down in Worthing, my parents couldn't stop talking about it.

Peter Bonetti was imo the first goalkeeping Super star.

What's annoying is the press still mentioning the game against Germany in the world cup while paying their respects to Peter's passing.  Totally uncalled for in my mind.

That clown Lineker  had to mention " the crab" after Ray Wilkins passed away, anyone who saw Ray playing for us as a youngster will know he had a great range of passing and vision, as well as a thunderbolt of a shot.

No class, even in death they can't help themselves.

Agree. From what I've read of the game against West Germany Ramsey made some substitutions which some reporters found baffling. As you say, totally uncalled for to mention the game in 1970. Far more important to remember that only Chopper has made more appearances for the club and Peter held the record for clean shirts for many years.

It wouldn't have been an issue if Ramsey had played Ossie instead of Astle England would have been out of sight.

Another thing that angers me about Peter Bonetti's career people always mention that game in Mexico. Yet Peter Shilton let a goal through his legs in qualifying game 73 against Poland, got out jumped by a midget in 86 was miles off his line against Germany in 90 and Mickey Droy in hobnails would have got nearer those penalties then he did.

Astle didn't play in the game against West Germany. We started with Hurst and Lee up top. It was a game we should have won, the substitution of Charlton was a game changer though he was suffering as were other with the match being played at midday to suit European viewing time. The main game changer was the Germans bringing on Grabowski who tore us apart on the wing. I think its fair to say Pete didn't have his finest game,he probably should have done better with the first goal and after that we should have defended better as a team. Losing Banks was a blow but ultimately the heat and conditions did for us more.

I think its better for us as Chelsea fans to remember Pete as the great keeper that he was and a major part in the emergence of a great young team. He played on injured in the final and we as fans witnessed many fine saves by him. Sadly a lot of those are now in the memory as there just wasn't the same video coverage that there is today. He quite rightly will go down in Chelsea folklore as a legend of the club.

The Guardian's obituary - written by Brian Glanville - devotes the first FIVE paragraphs to that Mexico QF. Unf**kingbelievable.

Yes your right sorry about that. Although Astle started one game and came on as a sub for another which was criminal with Ossie on the bench. You're right about Bonetti but I thought the main turning point was Bobby Charlton coming off which freed Beckenbauer who'd been man marking him.

I've just read it on line mate. Absolutely outrageous to give so much prominence in  his obituary to that one incident.

as someone up there said, we remember him as the great, brave Chelsea keeper he was, that's all that matters.

That's how I remember it. Grabowski did make a difference but with Beckenbauer pinned back in his own half, England should and could have coped. I remember my old man saying Ramsey was saving Bobby for the semi-final and maybe that's what happened but that defeat should not be placed squarely on the shoulders of Bonetti. After that game, it was another 12 years before England played in another WC finals. Ramsey, I think, didn't trust 'flair' players which was why lads like Osgood, Bowles, Marsh, Worthington, and Hudson were not capped as often as they should have been. In fact, as I recall, Ramsey didn't cap Hudson at ll.
