Somewhat surprising there has not been more interest in Conor.  I'd be happy with him staying for another year for continuity purposes, and he somewhat earned that. But do not want to see him leave on a free like Rudi or Andreas.

Good player, but not in our best 11.

If I were him I’d be off to Athleti. Hes probably already at the biggest club he’s likely to play for but going to Madrid might help him improve his game.

To be fair Conor is a great fit for Simeone.

Still I don't understand why we are selling one if our best players. If it is for next PSR cycle I get it but otherwise it is weird.

I don't think its just him. Chilwell, Sterling and Cucurella have all had reports suggesting we would sell if the right price came.

Ownership don't want an overly expensive bench with players earning £150kpw +

Most likely he stays now with everything happening with Enzo. Doubt the club will sell him with Enzo's future at the club no in doubt and even if Enzo stays I doubt he'll be playing the first couple of months of the season.

Or alternatively you could argue it makes it even more likely he is sold, as we will need to cover the financial hit of a fire sale of Enzo Fernandez, if selling Enzo is the action the club decide on.

All this is probably better news for the likes of Lavia, Andrey Santos, Ugochukwu and Veiga, all of whom can play in the DM position that Enzo was probably ear marked for alongside Caicedo.

Zero chance this happens. Enzo is an idiot but most sportspeople are not the sharpest. Didn’t Spurs have an issue with comments Bentacur made about Son a month ago, Granacho was also in hot water last year. It isn’t ideal but it will be dealt with internally.

Agreed will be dealt within the club ,won't sell him losses would be huge it'll all be forgotten shortly . Media will make a huge issue of course

but tomorrows chip paper.

And they are signing overly expensive average unproven players by the bucketloads. There will be a time when some of these average players turn out to be decent and demand a raise. Then will we sell them and start the cycle all over again ?

Can't imagine Palmer and Gusto settling for the wage they're currently on.

Thing is though; is there actually a market for him? I can’t see him starting for any of the traditional top 6; Spurs looked like the most likely destination and his reservations aside, they have signed Archie Gray and he won’t even start ahead of Maddison, Matar Sarr, Bissouma & Bentacur.
Personally think he has a role, not as a starter but I think that is a key factor on whether he renews his contract or not. Still find it shocking we never bundled him with £10m for Douglas Luiz who Villa sold for a paltry £41m & would have clearly upgraded our midfield and better than KDH. Won’t be surprised if he ends up at Newcastle before the window closes as a replacement for Guimaraes who might be City bound.

Isn't really that the whole purpose of the contract incentives? If you perform well, IE Champions League, you get a pay bump?

The point is not a raise but by how much will the board accept. If the player performs well and wants a higher salary (say in excess of 200kpw). Will the board sanction a sale for a big sum because firstly they will get a healthy profit on the sale and secondly save a whole lot on salary or pay the man what he wants.

These players didn't sign 2-3 year contracts here. They signed almost decade long contracts, so they and their agents would've have done their due diligence. I can't imagine them agreeing to such a long term deal if there wasn't a significant pay bump once they achieve Champions League football. The only player that is even being looked at for an improved deal I reckon is Palmer and that is largely down to the unexpected emergence from him last season. He will probably now earn as much as Caicedo and Enzo.

If Palmer repeats his performances of last season but we do fail to get CL football still he could ask for around 250kpw and if we deny then he could be lured by a rival. My question is are we willing to pay a top salary for an elite player ? Can't believe the likes of Tosin and Guiu are getting more than Palmer.

This is the question that everyone want to know.

Right now our transfer strategy is closer to brighton than a team who try to compete for title.

Brighton lost mccalister and Caicedo. They could keep them if they want, just match Chelsea/Pool salary or more but that will break their salary/transfer policy.

I'd say our transfer policy is closer to Real Madrid if anything. We just don't have the lure or stability to see any sort of immediate success.

Not really, RM strategy is standard big team strategy. You sign young player, you pair them with mature player.

This is standard procedure. You can keep strong culture in your dressing room, you can get those kids to learn from the veteran, you continue competing at the top and even if those kids turnout to be a dud, it doesn't matter.

That is not Chelsea strategy. As Todd said, chelsea strategy is about keeping the carrying cost aka wages low while maintaining or increasing the value of the player. This sounds more Brighton than RM.

Maturity doesn't equal quality though. Clearlake can go out and bring in more mature players but that won't really impact the club unless they are of a high quality. The mature players Real Madrid are signing are elite (Rudiger/Alaba/Mbappe) that they alone can afford given their global revenue. It also offsets their ridiculous wages by getting them as free transfers, which goes with my point that Real Madrid have the lure and stability we don't. At its very core, I think Clearlake and Brighton's strategy really isn't that dissimilar to the model Real Madrid have who all have a priority of signing the elite young talent across the globe that can provide a long term impact.

Talent doesn't develop in a vacuum though. You don't just buy players with "potential" and then they magically get better with time. They need mentoring from senior players too.
