Come May 2024, Potter will have had 20 months in the job, 3 transfer windows, and whole new team with his name all over it.

Over those next 18 months it's going to be "painful" as he said after the 4-1 drubbing.

The only reason to sack him in those 18 months would be if we end up in the bottom half dozen struggling to stay up.

Now the big question.

Where do we need to be in May 2024 for us to continue project Potter ?

Anything below 8th next May will surely be the end of him.

Don't expect us to be in the top 4 this season, if we're only a few points off and seeing some progression it's not the end of the world. Then Potter and the newly formed recruitment team have a big summer, I'd hope after a period of bedding in we'd be aiming to get top 4, even if it's only just. This would all need to go hand in hand with a dramatic improvement in our playing style, the whole sell to the fans on changing the culture, seemed to me at least to point towards the historic negative style we've played for some time. If we just miss out on the top 4 but have a squad gelling together with an easy on the eye style, I think he carries on.

I'm all for Potter, however if results carry on dwindling, with no apparent improvement or vision for how he wants us to play i can see them sacking him before the end of the season, especially if we're to spend 50-100m in January, which you have to presume we will.

A season without CL might not even be the worst thing for the club. Less fixture congestion and proper time on the training pitch to learn Potter's ideas. Come back to it the year after and dominate.

His ideas appear to be sh*t though.

I voted competing for top 4 but that may as well just be finishing top 6 depending on the other teams performances throughout 2023-24.  However we must show some fight to be amongst the top teams and not just be content finishing in any Europa place.

He (or any other manager tbh) will need a whole new spine to the team to complement Reece (if he stops being injured every season as well), so I believe this january and next summer will be crucial, not counting too much on january 24 as if we still need someone there it's most likely we're still failing.

Worked pretty well at Brighton. I remember their fans boo'ing him after a tough run of fixtures, they stuck with him now he built them a squad and style that sit above us in the league.

Stop being sensible and start knee jerking pal, its how its done now....

When PL football returns we have the following:

Bournemouth (H)

Notts Forest (A)

Man City (H)

Crystal Palace (H)

Liverpool (A)

Fulham (H)

For me we should be getting minimum of 13/14 points from these fixtures.

Probably top 8 and get sacked

the job is too big for him

Not a dig at you personally but this is the laziest take in football ever. How are people ever to move up in their manager career if every time they're met with 'the jobs too big for him', with zero proof of that being true.

The same could have been said for Pep when he took over Barca, Klopp for Dortmund, Arteta for Arsenal. Worked out pretty well for them lot. Potter has as much chance as being the next world dominating manager as he does a job being too big for him.

Jose at Porto.

Fergie at Man Utd.

Context matters rather than the position we finish imo. Arsenal played well in the second half of last season but didn’t get to CL we on the other hand were sh*t and scraped by getting into the top 4. Arsenal continued to build on that this season and we continued to get worse from last season.
If there is an improvement in our football  even if we don’t get to Europe, Potter deserves to go on.

One could argue getting into a position even a strong finish won't be enough for top 6 is a sackable offense in itself.

Hopefully that theory wont get put to the test.
