Gavi from Barcelona

Buy Gavi and bring in Enrique... would work. I just can't see us getting a Barca boy... maybe if they are in a situation they have to sell....

I reckon he could be moving in the summer but there will be lots of competition for his services; Pep & Klopp are fans. La Liga have told them to reduce their wages by €200m in the summer and also reduce revenue, so presently Gavi is back earning a youngster’s wages, and they also can’t offer him an improved contract till they do so.

The crazy club is also trying to resign Messi in the summer, so might be forced to sell him & De Jong to free up cap space.

Could someone enlighten me on what qualities he has that we need please ?

On paper, he just looks like another small midfielder who doesn't contribute much by way of goals or assists ... ?

Scouting report on FBRef doesn't exactly look great ... I mean it's OK. but nothing leaps out ... nor does the "similar player" list that the algorithms compare him to exactly scream "top quality list of players" ... RLC and Gallagher are both in it for starters !

Doesn't matter. Todd loves expensive midfielders/wingers. He qualifies in that category.

Yeah you'd imagine we'd need Enrique for our name to even be in the hat.

Although that said I didn't think we had a snowball in hells chance of getting Enzo who what do I know 🤣

I don’t see why we would need him? I think we have plenty of young players, what we need badly is experience.

It really would be lovely if we can bring in experienced leaders. Imagine a player like Benzema, he would do wonders for this young squad.

He'll be a free, won't he?

Very intelligent player and at his age its quite spectacular. Retains the ball well, can work under a press, is an absolute engine, and can be an influence in every phase of the build up.

I mean if we sell Gallagher for 40m and bring in Gavi for free, we'll look like bloody geniuses.

Wasn’t that what we went for in the summer when we signed Aubameyang, Koulibaly & Sterling? None of those players have looked liked leaders, and you could argue most of them aren’t motivating anymore & just happy picking up a pay check. You look at that Arsenal squad, and you argue experience is overrated. Aubameyang even said Arteta prefers young players who won’t question him. Middle of the table is also not the right position to be buying experience, it could end up being a disaster.

Seriously? "At the young age of 18, Gavi has become the youngest player to score a goal in the history of Spain at the World Cup"

Great that he is playing and scoring (5th goal in the 7-0 vs Costa Rica) in the World Cup, tempered though by the observation that on other threads on here some people are saying no to Enrique on the basis of lack of performance in the World Cup, and yet now we want to sign the Spain players who produced that lack of performance ? Posters have been saying Dave is washed up and past it for the last 2 seasons, and yet he was also in the Spain team in Qatar. Is that their level right now ?

What qualities does he have that our current spate of midfielders don't have ? Is he going to get in the side ahead of Fernandez and Kante if we stick to 5 at the back ? If  we play 4-3-3 then none of them are great at DM, all of them are relatively short (Fernandez tallest at 5'10"), and none of them have much in the way of numbers for goals and assists,, albeit I think Fernandez might have potential if played further forwards.

Gavi plays ahead of Busquets (and alongside Pedri) for both Barcelona and Spain in a 4-3-3. Given what we have already, surely you'd think the Busquets type of player is what we actually need ? A DM, with some physical presence ... ? And if we are signing a more advanced midfielder, then surely the better fit is one that scores and assists more heavily than Gavi ? Are we merely interested because he is potentially free rather than what we actually need for a balanced midfield ?

Comparing Gavi to Gallagher is an actual footballing insult.

I doubt there is anything too much into it. He's a golden boy and Barca's prized asset along with Pedri. They'll find some loophole to register him and extend his deal.

I'm sure it is, but that is what his performance stats throw up as a valid comparison on FBref, based on his 3000 odd minutes on the pitch in the last year. His levels are well down in relation to the same site's view of Enzo as well.

I get that he is young and has huge potential, and has already played a season and a half in Barcelona 1st team and at a World Cup. But we just signed Fernandez for the same reasons ... and also have Santos, Chukwuemeka and Casadei to supposedly develop for our starting midfield, plus Kante and Kovacic for experience, and then our own academy lads in Mount, Gallagher and possibly also Hall for midfield as well. And that is before we sign the DM that both Enrique and Nagelsmann have identified as key.

I agree on your doubts. I'd be very surprised if he actually wants to leave Barcelona, and this is probably just his agent focussing the minds of the Barcelona board.

From what I have seen of him, he's like another Herrera but with more energy. He's always fouling players, jumping all over them. He never stops arguing with them, he's always whinging, always getting into fights and has the most punchable face in football right now. He will pull out a nice run and pass now and again, but it's not something he will do for 90 minutes of a football match.

His temperament reminds me of Rooney's when he was younger. He's aggressive, but it's not the good kind of aggressive. I would expect him to pick up a lot of cards if he was in a Chelsea shirt. There are tons of compiliation videos showing how much he fouls players.

Interesting ... you've usually got a pretty good handle on things Scott ... would you take him if he was available and wanted to come ?

From your reply, he sounds more suited to a team that likes to kick people rather then a team trying to emulate Manchester City's finer points of football ?

Well, he would certainly put 100% into every game, which is more than can be said for most of our lot. I do think he has talent, but at the same time I think he is a bit overrated and never should have won the best young player of 2022, I thought there were a lot of young players that were better than him in 2022. I am convinced that he only won it because he plays for Barcelona.

I don't watch all of Barcelona's games, and maybe I missed the ones where he was brilliant, but I haven't seen a single game yet where he's looked like more than a workhorse with the odd decent run, pass and dribble. Maybe as time goes on all of his positives will get better, but it would be a big risk, especially seeing as we have already taken a lot of risks on these potential players that still haven't shown anything for us yet. Also, anytime he seems to come up against teams that have a bit of something about them, he gets bullied.

I remember watching him against United in the Europa League and it just seemed like the standard Gavi performance. Lots of running, a few nice passes, but mostly fighting, giving away stupid fouls, diving into tackles at the wrong times, misplacing passes and easy frustrated. Just a serious lack of discipline to his footballing ability and his temperament.

He looks like the Spanish version of Anthony Gordon in that video !

Sounds too good to be true. At Gavi's age, Boehly could offer him a 15 year deal 😅

It might make sense if Enrique is a done deal just not public yet why on earth we would go near Barca for a deal beats me.
