Leicester are in the Championship because, amongst other things: (a) their manager, who had run out of ideas and enthusiasm, stayed far too long; and (b) the squad badly needed a refresh but the owners couldn't afford it because Covid wiped a small fortune off their airport duty free empire.

Leader of that backline that collapsed. Amazing for Denmark as well. You can debate all you can but he was extremely important to them. De Gea for MU massively brilliant shot stopper but appalling as a distributor. Had also mistakes in him.

Even Mendy in the worst form of his career was 2 points better than Ederson. Ederson is measured by his distribution and intelligence. He only needs to stop shots here and there. Look at how Pep plays him. I bet Pep has zero intention to replace him or look anywhere else. He is perfect for them. Would be perfect for us as well.

I tried to revolutionise golf by counting only every second shot.
August 2, 20232 yr I think that the phrase ball playing goalkeeper is often misused to be honest. I think Ederson is one of, if not the only, truly ball player keepers in our league. He plays as the old libero style of playing, clipping, pinging or fizzing the ball from his feet pretty much as will. Of course it helps having a solid, disciplined defensive unit to allow the time and space to execute these passes, but that said Ederson can still perform under pressure. Sanchez was overlooked by de Zerbi for Steele because Steele fitted his model. Its not that Sanchez is not capable of spraying passes around from his feet, but he is less comfortable when put under pressure than Steele. De Zerbi’s style is to play chicken, entice the player to press, create triangles and then pass around the opposition until the lose interest. Steele will, and does, get caught in possession or the “out” player gets caught. But he is still more comfortable with this style that Sanchez is. Whilst we play out from the back we don’t entice the opposition into our area 8 yards from goal very often. Saying Kepa is comfortable with the ball at his feet, I am not too sure to be honest. There are keepers that can receive the ball under pressure and can pass it on or deal with the press reasonably comfortably. Alisson for example. Even those players that can deal with those situations can still have a wobble as is often seen. For me Kepa is okay providing he is not under pressure when receiving the ball and he can do that little drag back thing with his right foot before clipping to the wings. Any side on pressure and it is a bigger clip to the centre circle with is a 50/50 zone. With Mendy, I think that we created a solid defensive box around him, so he often didn’t have to deal with that press. This left him doing what he was pretty good at, with his height and presence, which was commanding on crosses and some decent shot stopping, especially when his confidence was up. His overall kicking wasn’t bad during this period mainly because it was largely limited unpressurised clips (similar to Kepa) or sidewinders out of his hands. His calamities mainly appear to come when the ball was put back into a pressurised press from the opposition and he could untangle his legs quick enough. Onana at Man Utd is a ball playing keeper of sorts, not necessarily the best sort either. With Ederson he almost looks bored, he is comfortable just laying the ball off to Walker with a simple touch or Dias, or dinking it into Stones and let them get on with it. Onana, I think is a different animal. I just get the feeling that he wants everyone to see how good he is with the ball and that can lead to erratic behaviour and mistakes. Let’s hope. I’d like an elite keeper because I think it is a difference maker (take 10 points off of any league champion and see where they finish) but I have a lad who is a semi-pro keeper so I am naturally biased. If it is Sanchez, I think he can be a success and can be comfortable with the ball at his feet, providing we have a structure and discipline that suits his style of play.

He is amazing with the ball and highly intelligent. They stopped chasing keepers after they signed him. They had some sh*tty ones before like the one we scored 3 against at their place when we won the title. Hazard, Willian and Costa scored. Willians goal is 100% on that goalie. City probably face the least shots in the league and when teams get to places where they get to shoot they usually are very good spots. This probably explains his poor percentage on shot stopping.
August 3, 20232 yr Just been signed for £25 million. Brightons 3rd choice GK for £25 million. Will just keep my mouth shut about that one i think.

I think it is fair to say that it is a way of giving the Lizard and Brighton some money and therefore sweetening the Caicedo deal.

It needs to result in Caicedo arriving here for no more than 85mill now, otherwise we have very much overpaid for a player Bighton have been trying to sell since the back end of last season.
August 3, 20232 yr Tony Bloom must absolutely love doing business with Toddy , trousers down again ffs

August 3, 20232 yr £5m of add ons for when Caicedo becomes a Chelsea player LOL Edited August 3, 20232 yr by Sexyfootball
August 3, 20232 yr All our kiddie keepers will go on loan, I suppose. Hopefully one of them will have the required level in about 2 years. About time we find our top class goalie in the academy!

Sanchez is young enough to be #1 for 10 years, plus he's had our "head of goalkeeping" fighting his corner, who is thus heavily invested in Sanchez being successful.
August 3, 20232 yr How good is this guy (better than Kepa?), and any ideas as to why he fell our of favour at Brighton?

August 3, 20232 yr Oh well. Let's hope Ben Roberts knows what he is doing ... I wonder what we have agreed to pay him ? He was on £25K a week at Brighton, so I expect we've quadrupled that for no good reason 🙂
August 3, 20232 yr I am surpised a bit by the vitriol to be honest. We have bombed off Mendy who basically fell apart. None of the back ups are ready, in fact the one that everyone has been raving about, Slonina, looked more out of his depth than either Cumming or Bergstrom. Loans for these would be good for them. £20m up front for competition for Kepa (and i think he is better than Kepa, but that's just opinion) is a good while Pochettino doesn't feel an elite keeper is a priority with the money available. It completes the goalkeepeing position, for less money than we are paying for kids that we are then sendng on loan and if it sweetens teh pot to get Caicedo for Pochettino, all is good. I am not sure what there is to be critical of at the moment. Whilst i would have prefered an elite level keeper, if Sanchez turns out to be as bad as or worse than Mendy then we can worry, until then, surely we have moved forward.

August 3, 20232 yr Sanchez is surely our GK coach's choice. So the person that coaches our keepers know this dude very well. This is very good for the move to be successful. If he manages to make Sanchez number 1 I think we have made a great move. Kepa for me is number one for at least next season.
