He is 3rd choice though, he lost his place to Steele, spat his dummy out about it and hasnt played much since.

At that time if steele had gotten Injured he would have played, no way on earth they would have thrown some unplayed kid in with European qualification on the line.

Surely they must have overpaid to secure Caicedo slightly cheaper. I don’t see a massive upgrade. I think I would have been happy with Kepa as our defence is pretty solid.

Cech a world class GK took Mendy under his wings and made him a CL winner.

Cech a world class goalkeeper, one of the best that we have had for years, and not a ball playing keeper. Mendy similar to Cech in that respect. Sanchez can definitely be a success here

Well yeah he was 2nd choice at that point, so if steele had gotten injured, I sure they would tried to repair the relationship with Sanchez and put him back in the team.

It's a moot point though because Steele stayed fit, kept his place, and they signed Van Bruggen to be number 1.

Sanchez is surplus to requirements for them clearly. Yet we are paying a fee as if he is their number 1 keeper.

Hopefully theres more to it, otherwise we shouldve hired whoever negotiate the sales at Brighton and we wouldve made another £50m on the players we have flogged this summer!

I'm a bit confused, is this lad coming in as a # 2 to keep Kepa on his toes or is he the replacement # 1 ?

I recall he did alright for Brighton and see his been capped twice by Spain, seems like a good back up or if Kepa reverts to type an able stand in ?

Now we have 2 keepers who aren’t at the necessary level.

This is backwards stuff considering we’ve been having a relatively good summer of transfers, can only assume this is to sweeten relations with Brighton for Caicedo.

As mentioned previously we had Kepa being jelly wrists, Cech went and got us a tall keeper for £20m ish, he kept 3 PL clean sheets in a row and went on to become a CL winner. In the right structure and style of play Sanchez can absolutely cement himself as the main keeper until Pochettino is ready to trade up higher.

Let’s hope for a similar scenario then.

Just hope the contract length and wages are manageable, already reported that Brighton have a sell-on fee in future, which doesn’t bode well.

I must admit I did think that this was part of a cunning plan to get us Caicedo, so today's comments from Brighton leave me a little uneasy especially with the sell on clause.

Trying to convince myself that this is still a decent enough deal in its own right, but if we don't get Caicedo, I must admit I wouldn't pi$$ on Tony Bloom if he was on fire.

Not a bad GK and a possible upgrade over Kepa, is he the number 1 GK that will take us back into CL and possibly title challenge? Not convinced. He lost his starting spot towards the end, and Brighton didn't suffer much. They got a replacement, so we paid good money for their third choice, which is a lot. Would any clubs in England or Europe pay that much for him? I haven't seen or heard it.

Sounds like we went to the dealership to buy a Rolls Royce and got sold an old fiat van with an over priced extended warranty.  Even though we’d previously been to this dealership and paid over the odds for what we thought was a nice little Jeep Defender. Which turned out to have a bad timing belt, no reverse gear, and a head full of rust.

If it was as recently as last January we tried to get him we'd have been likely quoted around £50m.

Similar to United with Mount, we're paying for what they are at their best not what went on in the recent months.

Nearly all our purchases this transfer season are looking good at this point. I'll not be too negative on Sanchez until there is reason to be. There are plenty of football players that fall out with their manager and go on to have great careers. We picked up Makele from Real that way and have lost Robben, De Bruyne, Salah to our cost.

Looking at Arsenal's bid for Raya, its a very comparable price.

A little bit of context for the "he's Brighton's 3rd choice keeper" narrative from the Brighton forum.

Steele did get injured, and after two months of quiet benchwarming Sanchez was picked and played two of the biggest games in our history, our first win at Stamford Bridge followed by the Cup semi final at Wembley. He excelled in both, a chance to re-establish himself you might say, but was dropped back to the bench immediately after. Then Steeke shipped five against Everton and was. looking anything but a PL shot stopper, but RDZ told Sanchez he wasn't getting back in the team, at which point he got upset and the rest is history.

That is the suckered punch right there though. Raya is measurably better than Sanchez and is being quoted for similar money.

The fact that we didn't even try for Raya makes me think that there is more to this Sanchez transfer behind the scenes.

You've just compared Robert Sanchez to Makelele, Robben, De Bruyne and Salah?

I love your optimism... But wow!

Thanks for that. It is not the level but that they were out of favour, left and went on to to do (much) better at a club where they were appreciated.  I think you know that but I'm never quite sure how seriously to take comments.

Oh well.

Let's hope Ben Roberts knows what he is doing ...

I wonder what we have agreed to pay him ? He was on £25K a week at Brighton, so I expect we've quadrupled that for no good reason 🙂

Well we are the champs of being punked in the market so I'd say you're pretty much spot on.

Happy to eat my words, but I think the 3 recent signings will prove to be a massive waste of money.

Wasn't the entire point of our new strategy that we were supposed to stop paying obscene amounts for backups? I thought the whole idea was that we would prepared to pay big for players that would actually strengthen us and then use the academy/hidden gems for back ups.

£100 million on the latest three is insane. Very 2017 esque.

honestly, only question is why... why this keeper?

Then I have other why questions. Why are we sniffing around Brighton like its a f*cking rose smelling sphincter? Why are we as a club no different to a punter who keeps getting turned down by the prostitute. Why do the club keep going back to an abusive partner??? There is so much wrong with our links to Brighton is unhealthy. Can we just move on and forget about them as a club?

Well ... I think you are very generous of said dealership. In fact dealership is the wrong word I fear ... highway robbery more like.

I seem to remember you being just as dismissive about Jackson.

Maybe we can wait until they've played on the pitch. Not to mention, not long back you said signing older heads were a risk free strategy so why are you complaining about a couple of such coming in?

Its not similar money, Arsenal have a had low ball bid rejected and hes likely to go for between £35 and 40m.
