Similarly if he makes great saves and we win 1-0 then he's saved us two points vs if it was otherwise a draw and three vs if we'd lost. You can't just give him zero credit because "any keeper would have saved it" ... if you go down that road then the same applies to all the goal scores and assisters. e.g. "Noni's hat trick didn't count because Neto would have scored those chances as well" etc etc We allow a sh*t ton of shots on goal compared to the other clubs that are contending for Top 4, and we have still only conceded 14 goals (including all the mistake ones), mainly because the bloke in goal has saved most of them. People go on about all these other keepers than are "better" and they are all conceding more goals than us. I've seen it said that Petrovic is having a good season on loan and he has a save percentage in the mid 60s ... I'll take Sanchez in the high 70s vs that all day long ... What about errors leading to goals? He's up there in all of Europe.

I believe he's had two man of the match awards even on here so far this season, basically because he made a difference to the result with his performance (Bournemouth and Forest). Is he Cech or Courtois level ? Absolutely not ... but that doesn't preclude that he's the best of our bunch right now, and therefore in the team on merit. Like all our players, he'll probably perform better if he gets some unconditional support.

Momentum matters in football, in a large number of games he makes more bad choices than good ones and that helps the opposition gain traction or confidence as seen V Leicester and a number of games this season. Our defence can be erratic becuase of it. He is a modern keeper and across the league, in most weekends a keeper or defender has an absolute howler. While he's with us, I hope he's a lucky keeper.
November 25, 20241 yr Can't believe i'm seeing people still defend him. At least two mistakes a game that keepers in our U15's wouldn't make.

All I ever want from any player is his positives outweigh the negatives, currently with Sanchez that simply isnt true, he is a liability in every game, and he has obviously lost the trust of his defenders.

Seeing people justify his mistakes by saying they don't matter because it didn't cost us points is one of the most idiotic reasoning i've seen on here in quite some time.
November 26, 20241 yr It's called riding your luck. Some of us know it's only a matter of time before it does cost us points. Half full, half empty I suppose.

He's at the same situation as "improved" Kepa, despite some brilliant moments goals just kept going in and every 50/50 chance seemed to fall to the attacker.

He might be the first but is not the latter. And I'm not convinced he's better then Jorgensen

November 27, 20241 yr Benttinelli is 32 and started one FA Cup match against Chesterfield for Chelsea in his career. I'm pretty sure he's not the one. Though your point about Sanchez not being better is valid. Edited November 27, 20241 yr by Scott
December 1, 20241 yr Our third week in a row in the top THREE with Robert "we'll never make Top 4 with him in goal" Sanchez. Solid performance today after Jorgensen applied a bit of pressure on Thursday night.

Scares the sh*t out of me but pretty faultless all day today

December 1, 20241 yr He seemed to go long more than usual, and that's a good thing. Think Jorgensen's midweek performance may have been noticed by Sanchez.

Excepet he was trained in Broighton's youh accadmy and has been in England since the age of 15 so I don't really think that can be an excuse. Also did your see Martinez grab that cross out of the air (he hurt his back but still) Ederson and Alison, niether of who are giants seem to be pretty decent at it. Strangely I actually thought it was one his strong ponts last year but this season seems to elect to punch much more

Strangely I actually thought it was one his strong ponts last year but this season seems to elect to punch much more There is generally a European style of goalkeeping introduced into the academy network in this country about 20-25 years ago. Punching the ball unless the success percentage is very high is the preferred method as it clears the ball from the zone rather than risk dropping the ball or getting caught in traffic. Similarly there was also a split I approach for corners. Whilst large aggressive keepers coming for corners has been much of our culture, the European style was more based ofpn smaller keepers not coming into heavy traffic and having good reactions for the second balls. When DDG first came to England he was getting panned for not having presence at corners. I am not saying what is right or wrong, but I can understand if Sanchez has been coached to punch as his first instinct. And for Martinez maybe the South American approach is different.
December 1, 20241 yr I wonder if Jorgensen gets the saints game? Will Maresca apply that rotation to a league game or just to players who cannot play more than a game a week like Lavia?
December 1, 20241 yr Didn’t have much to do all game but kept his focus and a really good save for the one on one with Watkins after he nicked the ball off Fofana.

Marcus was arguably the worst keeper in the Championship the last time he played a full season. Serves a good purpose as a 3rd choice keeper as that's the one role character matters more than ability, but if we god for bid have to play him for a significant amount of time (ala Hilario in 2006) it could be a massive season derailer.

"If we don't get top 4 then he'll be the reason why" But I'm soo happy with his performance today. Only 1 iffy bit but some great saves. If he continues like this then I'll even retract that we need a gk in the transfer window. Jorgensen is coming along nicely too going by his last game. Improvements all round.

I think if it's 20 - 25 yeats old and its in the academy network we should no longer be refering to it as a european style of goalkeeping. Maybe it's the coaching thing from this year because im convinced that last year he was plucking everything out of the air. It just takes so much preshure of the defence to have a keeper who's going to pick up anything around the 6 years box. Any way, its not actually the reason i think we need to upgrade.. I just don't consider him to be good enough
December 2, 20241 yr After an exhaustive search I am delighted to announce that I have found our successor for Sánchez: Ortega defended his manager’s reaction, while criticising the city of Liverpool. “Someone told me before that this area is probably not the best part in the UK,” the City keeper said.
