I don't understand how a manager can make such poor judgement. It goes beyond his mistakes but the effect he has on the team. 

When players have full confidence in their goalie, they are able to play without the pressure of what's he gonna do now and thus put in better performances. Less nerves for the defenders which translates to better support for the midfield and better team play generally.

It's why everyone was shocked when he said Sanchez was his number 1 immediately he came in. He's not even good at what you want your goalkeeper to do and yet you give him the number 1 glove without even trying to allow the guy that kept him on the bench last season play or go for an all out replacement.

Maresca gets a massive F here for me.

Jackson - @abister1loves him.

I know it’s early days, but I expected more from Jorgensen given that he was scouted and identified. I expected him to challenge Sanchez more.

At some point, you perhaps have to question the set up of the goal keeping department and coaching. Ben Roberts and Hilario specifically ... albeit you can't necessarily make a silk purse out of a sows ear !

Maybe I'll give you Cech but even that is questionable as whilst he had potential to be good he wasn't yet a superstar goalie. 

Thibaut same, even less reputation than Cech, yet to play an international game, dominated his area because of his height but he wasn't particularly mind blowing. Atleti developed him for us. Was a shame that happened as he felt more affiliation with Spain than Chelsea hence why he left eventually. Although players generally don't turn down and opportunity to go Madrid, was the way he forced the move that left a sour taste in our mouths. 

I agree with the post per getting a quality goalie once and for all. The two most important positions for us now are GK and CB. If only City didn't get ahead of us for Gvardiol. He'd have been our best defender right now.

So by ruthless I mean a clear upgrade oportunity was identified and initiated, cudicini was a clear fan favioret but the club brought in cech and on day one Jose put him in, the same could be said by the fact we droped Cech for Thibaut 10 years later, same manager... It could be argued that Chech was still the best keeper in the league but the bet was made to regardless of feelings or nostaligia. 

 

Alost, I think Chech was pretty well knowen, on the continent at least,  he had broken a number of domestic records and was a fully eshtablished keeper playing for then one of the best countries in europe and althought we'd already had him, he him self had an excellent euro's  (the dutch game a stand out)

Emenalo joined in 2007 so wasn't invovled in Chech signing.

Cost us 3 points yesterday. 

I continue to keep half an eye on how Marcin Bulka is doing at Nice, and in terms of the traditional GK metrics he's doing really well, though of course he'd probably be considered not good enough with his feet for us.

I remember him playing well pre season for us when he was very young. Should just have kept him instead of spunking £70m on Kepa. Absolutely lunacy.

The bigger issue is how do we offload Kepa, Sanchez, Jorgensen, Petrovic, Bettinelli, Slonina, and Bergstrom, in order to make space to go get a top keeper, and hope that Penders makes the grade along with one of Beach, Sharman-Lowe, Merrick or Curd

Bettinelli has the 3rd choice on lock. 

Kepa I don't see being a big issue selling given he will be in his final year. Doing somewhat well at Bournemouth. 

Slonina, Bergstrom, and Penders will be loaned out again. 

Off the 3 of Petrovic, Sanchez, and Jorgensen there were reports one of them would be used in a deal for Diogo Costa (Jorgensen). Sanchez I'd honestly sell (£14.5m remaining book balance) and keep Petrovic as the #2. Maybe send Penders to Strasbourg to replace.

He was in his final year this summer, we then extended him because no one would buy him

I wouldn't be surprised if he's not number 1 at Bournemouth by the end of the year...he's currently injured and his replacement is doing very well!

Wasn't he waiting for Real Madrid to come knocking again? His extension included a £5m release clause so for an experienced GK that is a pretty great deal tbf. 

Top goalkeepers earn you points over the course of a season, we have one that costs us points of the course of a season.

That’s where we are at now.

 

A top goalkeeper - challenge for Champions League spots or better 

A poor goalkeeper - we have to score goals just to equalise after a goalkeeper mistake.

 

Like I said before, I’m just hoping that while publicly the board don’t want to hang him out to dry, privately they know he’s a liability and they plan to do something about it ASAP.

I'd agree. We've signed numerous keepers over the last couple of years. While 1 or 2 may have been for the long term, there is nobody that looks good enough right now to improve our goalkeeping situation.

Bizarre player. Could legitimately argue that we would have both won and lost without him.

Both MOTM and walking disaster. Still like him more than Kepa.

To be fair, not one expert on spanish football I know of could comprehend why we targeted Jørgensen. The conspiratory and silly side of myself thinks its Ben Roberts pushing for Jørgensen just to make his golden boy Sanchez look good. I've said it before - Ben Roberts has never forgiven us for '97 and this is his payback

Petrovic is less crazy than Sanchez for sure but maresca want his gk to be very comfortable on the ball. I am not sure Petrovic is that kind of gk.

Sanchez isn't that kind of gk either. He looks scared and in panic everytime the ball is at his feet.
