Djordje Petrovic signs for Chelsea

Featured Replies

I really like him, I do get similar Mendy vibes where im not sure if he's just riding a wave at the moment or not but he seems solid enough.

Main points of concern for me are decision making when coming to collect a cross or act as a sweeper. And then also purely based on the eye test, I feel like he tends to palm saves back into quite dangerous areas.

Making the saves at all is an improvement on some recent keepers so happy to trust that he'll continue to grow into the role.

I posted somewhere that he was the best keeper in the MLS last year, and that for the price we got him for was peanuts according to some MLS enthusiasts. He really is just a standard, calm headed goal keeper. I think he is looking far better just because we, and the entire league, have been so used to ball playing bozo moment goal keepers. Petrovic keeps it simple.

Should be our starter for the foreseeable future.

Not sure which site that is from, but is it possible to do a compare of each against, say, Allison Becker ?

Interested to see how they look against the best keeper in the PL ...

Djorde doing well so far, and his save percentage (73.9%) is now the 5th best in the PL, but the small sample comment is very valid as that stat improved dramatically just with a few saves against Fulham !

Hard to take an American keeper seriously until he's bald anyway. I was pleasantly surprised at how high a percentile he apparently ranks at for sweeping, which is certainly not something which stood out to the (or my) naked eye.

This is versus Alisson (from https://mclachapp.streamlit.app/Player_Comparison):

Thanks for that PloKoon13 🙂

He already compares very well to the keeper who is generally acknowledged as the best in the league then ...

Go Đorđe !

Using the site recommended by @PloKoon13, Dorde stacks up very well against Sanchez.  Pretty much equal or better in every measurement.  Interested to see how Dorde handles tougher opposition, but very encouraging early signs.

I never felt like Villa were ever going to score past him tonight. What a signing he has been.

The meltdown when Sanchez starts over him will be fun

But I'm starting to think even Poch won't drop him

That mistakes in possession seems far too generous for Sanchez.

Suspicious even…

"[Sanchez's return] is a good thing for the team. You will see [the selection between him and Petrovic]. It's very good to be back. It's better to have all the players available."

Sanchez back this weekend, no idea if he's going back in the team or not.

You'd feel very disheartened if you were Petrovic should he be dropped for Sanchez. He's out performed him in virtually every way since he's come in.

Except that he hasn't .... :-)

Save %, goals conceded per game, and that other metric that describes how many they keep out (or not) vs xG are all in favour of Sanchez right now. Djorde has a better clean sheets percentage, and the team performance is better in terms of results, which one would hope might count for something ! Question is how much that is due to Petrovic being in goal instead of Sanchez. Given that we are conceding more goals per game with Djorde, you'd probably have to think that is more a function of the attack starting to be more clinical ?

Surprising I know ... as Djorde is certainly a less stressful "watch" for the average fan ...

Neither of these guys are in the Top 10 in the PL though based on the expected/90 (the more positive the better, and they are both negative, Petrovic more so than Sanchez.

I guess we are better than Arsenal, so that's something LOL. Also rubbing shoulders with Ederson at City !

The player view : Sanchez 15th and Petrovic 19th

If they use data to assess performance, then it will not be a surprise if Sanchez comes back in ...

Either way, it is a tough call for Pochettino to make as it could all blow up in his face very easily if he makes a change !

It's horses for courses really.

Petrovic won't make the mistakes Sanchez does mainly because he doesn't take the risks, but when the risks pay off with Sanchez they really pay off, case in point how many times we broke City's press at Stamford Bridge.

Basically long story short, both will do until we find our Ederson/Alisson.

It's interesting how bad Ederson is as an actual goalkeeper LOL. I guess that's what happens when you pick a deep lying playmaker in goal :-)

To be fair we are talking about minuscule differences in favor of Sanchez. One also needs to ask just how many of Sanchez's saves came directly from his bozo moments.

Also Opta/Squwaka is reporting different metrics that are in favor of Petrovic

I thought FBref data was based on Opta as well ... so I guess that's stats for you LOL

I think Squawka use a pretty strange set of data points for their GK compare tbh. Most of the green for Petrovic are all related to him facing more shots, and why would it be "better" to face 6 shots rather than 5 ? Or 1.9 from outside the box vs 1.2 ? Why is 1.9 "better" ? You could argue that it means the GK is worse because the opposition think they are more likely to score from distance against him so take more shots LOL.

I agree it is all fine lines, but when people are losing their sh*t at the thought of Sanchez coming straight back in, well for me that's a complete over-reaction. And I am no fan of Sanchez btw. On record in his thread as saying I thought he was a strange signing, as he's not really any improvement on Kepa. I wanted Martinez myself !

And how many of them are even out there? I haven't seen one that doesn't come with the same problems as all of the other so called good ball playing goalkeepers. Raya and Onana were supposed to be great, but both of them have issues.

I don't see why we must go this route anyway, it's not the only way to progress. It's not like Real Madrid have done too bad for themselves with Courtois in goal. He's not what I would call a ball playing goalkeeper.

I meant more bonafide world class keeper as opposed to ball playing perse.

Until one falls into our lap Sanchez and Petrovic offer enough between them.

Having a greater save % whilst facing more shots is imperative in overall analysis. Save % by itself provides no context.

But to play devil's advocate, how many saves has Petrovic made that have come from crosses Sanchez would have likely claimed? Or from the ball coming back at us from him hoofing it? (Sanchez's admittedly shocking errors distract from the fact he's generally pretty good in breaking lines and starting attacks).

This is where we have to rely on the eye test, and the overall opinion is that Petrovic and the backline look more assured between the sticks. Sanchez also isn’t the greatest at collecting crosses (Jesus punch and the Wimbledon pen come straight to mind.)

For every City performance, there is an Arsenal cock up.

Other than the inconvenient little fact that we are conceding more goals per game ...  but hey as long as it looks good to the eye ! :-)

I prefer it over the Sanchez routine bozo moments that’s for sure.
