Geovany Quenda

Featured Replies

Geovany Quenda (17) in has made 44 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring twice and providing eight assists. That's more than Cristiano Ronaldo, Figo, and Nani in their first full seasons at Sporting.

Find it weird some fans are moaning about a 17yr old kind not scoring enough or being tall enough.

These stats are completely irrelevant. Lukaku had stats better than Messi at the age of 20 if I remember correctly and look how he turned out.

On it's own, this signing doesn't bother me, what bothers me is that this is the only type of signing we are interested in. We need a goalkeeper, experienced CB, a winger that will deliver now, not 5 years time, and a 20+ goals a season striker. Spending another £60m on two young players just makes it incredibly difficult to sign players we desperately need.

We'll be stupid to sell off one of our only goal scorers and put our hope into a 17 year old that hasn't played a minute on this continent.

Sounds exactly like the kind of thing we would do TBH.

This is what annoys me.

I honestly think get those 4 positions sorted with proven quality and we'd possibly have a team to challenge for trophies.

Ignoring just one of those 4 important positions can cost you, but not taking any of them seriously is absolutely stupid.

Going to go against the grain and say I'm super excited about this kid.

I really like his dribbling style, it is very similar to Cole Palmer but with more power and pace. Quenda is so good at beating players with a single touch that attacks the space behind, which is crucial for dealing with packed defences. I don't think you can really teach that, some players are just so good at understanding how to attack space.

I think these players are historically more successful than players like Pulisic who try to beat players with close control but end up getting kicked off the park at EPL level.

The other really exciting thing is his work rate, he has some engine on him and could seriously be a RB/WB too. His highlights vs Arsenal are a good example of that.

Think both he and Essugo are good signings in isolation.

Sporting Lisbon fan on the players we’ve signed

Quenda - Amorim threw him in at the start of this season and he was a revelation. Very raw but he was electric down the wing and made a great impact. Off the boil slightly as the season has gone on but that’s to be expected with a 17 year old in his first professional season. I think we will end up bemoaning how much you’ve got him for, but having him come back to us next year makes sense all round.

Essugo - Slightly trickier one. Broke all kinds of records in Portugal for being our youngest debutant, youngest Portuguese player in the champions league etc at 16 years old. I think we all hoped he’d make an immediate impact and replace Palhinha when he left for Fulham but it just never happened. By all accounts he’s done okay at Las Palmas and he will have a decent career, I just highly doubt whether that’s at Chelsea

Basically, it's more gambling on young and raw players. Impossible to predict how good or bad they will end up being, but one things for sure, it's just more waiting. We wait on Mudryk, it fails, we wait on Madueke, it fails, we wait on Quenda....watch this space I guess.

All planning for a future that waits for nobody. Arsenal, Liverpool, City, Newcastle, Villa, they won't sit still and wait for our youngsters to get good. They will do it now, and they will also build for the future at the same time.

I'm always sceptical about these stats. With that amount of chances created, and playing alongside a striker like Gyokeres, you would expect more assists. So what kinds of chances are these exactly? I remember a stat came out for England the other day and it said Rashford created the most chances in the game, but all of his crosses and cut backs were either behind the striker or hit too long which gave them no chance to score.

It's different to Palmer for example. He was creating really good chances, but everybody (mainly Jackson) kept messing up the finish.

His G+A seems like more of the same level of "productivity" that we already get from Sancho and Neto ... and probably worse when you factor in that he is playing for the best team in Portugal, that scores the most goals, and doesn't have Maresca coaching all the life of the attack.

He is 17!

Probably why Sporting have been allowed to keep him for another year. For 17 years old in his first season playing senior football he's doing pretty well and the bits I've seen he looks class, but hopefully his goal contributions improve next season. Plus, with any luck Maresca will be managing a Serie B team by the time he arrives in 2026.

End of the day one of Palmer, Estevao and Quenda needs to learn to play LW

Both Quenda and Estevao have been pretty good there and it might be great for their development. Raphinha and Barcola come to mind as two recent examples of "cut-inside" wingers that took their game to the next level by playing on the opposite side and becoming genuine two-way players.

Quenda's 'best' position is a bit more of a mystery, because he genuinely has the power and physical potential to be a world-class fullback. He gets a lot of praise for his dribbling but it's his ability to pick a through-ball that is probably most eye-catching. If he could adjust to playing on the left, he would solve a lot of the defensive problems that Cucurella/Enzo cause when getting forward.

That's nice that he's learning English, but there are almost as many native Portuguese speakers (5 - Neto, Pedro, Santos, Estevao, Essugo) as English speakers (8 - James, Colwill, Acheampong, Delap, Gittens, Chalobah, Tosin...and technically, Cole Palmer)

Neto will be sold so one less next season hopefully

Probably have a season exactly like Estevao, fairly anonymous, flashes of brilliance and spending most of the time aclimatising to the British weather and physicality of the league. We've just had our pants pulled down and rogered by another club with this one.

Signed another nothing player.

A bit rich coming from an Australian.
