apparently Isco has decided to leave Real Madrid, and wants to play in the PL rather then Serie A, looks like he is heading to Tottenham!

Should have gone after him a couple of years ago....we are overloaded now....shame is the Spuds get him.

Deadline day prediction.

1 - Official confirmation of Alonso signing holding his shirt.

2 - Brozovic maybe

3 - CB on loan, Sakho or Mangala.

Could easily end with just number 1.  Big mistake

Legitimate question, what do you want the club to do? Their top two targets at CB was A) Unavailable and B) Injured. After that we tried a few bids for some backup options, but none were available. Cant see the point og bringing in a middle of the road player for a large fee that we need to move on from in a year

The club had all summer to figure out what to do. If their first choice targets were unavailable then they should have started working on alternatives long ago. Instead they chose to chase the same player until the last moment and now they're bidding for everyone and their mother with offers that stink of desperation all across Europe. They did exactly the same last year and ended up with nothing. There are smart people who learn from their mistakes, and there are wise people who don't make these mistakes, to begin with. And then there's the CFC board.

What players?

You need to be more specific with your questions.

Who should they have bought? Their top targets werent available, they have put in some requests for players that are in te tier below, but nothing serious it seems. The board cant create a top class CB out of thin air

Would be satisfied with:

1) any half-decent full back (Alonso likely) - Tick

2) a centre back not named Luiz - (looking desperate)

3) A forward (looking unlikely, unless James counts as one)

What I expect will happen:

1) Full back (Alonso)

2) Centre back - last minute scramble will see sub-par addition whether on loan or permanently.

3) Brozovic (meh), and/or

4) James on permanent deal.

They were chasing Koulibaly all summer, it's Stones saga all over again. Now they're bidding for Romagnoli, De Vrij, Marquinhos etc with almost no time left in the window and expect the clubs to sell their key players without having a chance to replace them. Leaving it all until it's too late - this is what's wrong with this approach.

Not really, the Marquinhos thing is just recycled from last year nothing to it. Romagnoli and De Vrij was just due dilligence to see if someone could get in. You still havent answered my question. Who should they have brought in when their top 2 targets werent available anymore?

They should have brought in whoever they determined was their second or third choice. I don't know who that was, only Conte and the board do. I'm fairly confident that any manager given the state of our backline would stress out the importance of buying new defenders.

So let's say Conte wants Koulibaly but he's not available. They should inform the manager that it's not going to happen and ask him if they should pursue their backup targets or it's 'Koulibaly or nothing' for him. I'm sure hed have preferred to have landed his second choices rather than stay put.

I'd be lowering those expectations if I was you

I think they'll go all out for James.

Not all that hyped over that potential signing anyway, nor the Brozovic one, tbh.

A proper forward, and a good, mobile centre back is what I really want.

Isn't that exactly what's happened?

I think you're overestimating the club's control here. Just because we're batting our eyelashes it doesn't make it any easier to sign backups, especially when said players and clubs are well aware they are backup options.

Im not sure he would have. From the target that are available, considering we have Christensen already on the books, Im glad we havent signed anyone just because. Thats what got us players like Salah and Cuadrado.

Hey guys, first time poster, long time reader. I really don't know why we aren't going after Daniele Rugani from Juve. He is behind Bonnuci, Chielini, Barzagli and Benatia atm. Good, solid young CB

My point is that it's a question of timing. If we bid enough money and leave the selling club enough time to find a suitable replacement, then at least we have a chance that they'll seriously consider it. Desperate attempts to snatch a key defender from any club in the last few days of the transfer window are almost guaranteed to end in failure.

True, but in my opinion it's equally likely (without information to suggest otherwise) that this is the fastest the club were possibly able to move. People are just assuming that the club have sat on their hands based on little information and the board are just a convenient scapegoat.

The pool of players who are both A) competent and B) willing to come to us is small because of our circumstances this season. I'm not sure if people are fully appreciative of this reality.

If there's one thing I can be critical of, perhaps it was the club underestimated this reality themselves. We really should have been rivalling Barca and Liverpool for the likes of Samuel Umtiti and Joel Matip who are very promising/solid backup defenders respectively, however the club appears to have aimed higher and missed.

I see your point there Sydney and it's a valid one. Only we had the same problem last summer and our circumstances were very different, us being the champions of England and still in the CL.

Take this with a massive chunk of salt, but my colleague is a Spaniard from Madrid and his familiy is friends with Florentino.

James will stay
Isco will be loaned but possibly to Malaga, not Tottenham
They have a signing they will announce today, a Uruguayan Striker, so unless we have a Figo 2.0 on the card that would be Cavani?

I'll go back to never speculating if none of that happens, but that's what he said.

Why do you think it's small?  It won't be small if the board was willing to stump up the cash for it.  The fact that the club has had to resort to last minute desperate moves show that it isn't as small as you think.
