Andre Schurrle for 15m

Chelsea told to stump up £15m if they want to land Leverkusen forward Schurrle

According to the Daily Telegraph a number of moves have been put on hold while the future of the manager is yet to be decided with Roberto Di Matteo in caretaker charge.

But the signing of Marko Marin from Werder Bremen, announced last weekend, for £6.5m had not previously been discussed by the club’s hierarchy and has endured a difficult season.

Tottenham Hotspur had a deal put in place to sign him this summer before Chelsea got there first.

Schurrle, 21, like Marin, 23, is young and a full international who hopes to be in the Germany squad at Euro 2012 although they could be in competition for a place.

Schurrle fits the profile of the kind of player Chelsea are trying to recruit.

Schurrle joined Bayern Leverkusen only last summer and featured against Chelsea during the club’s Champions League campaign this season.

He is over 6ft tall and can play as a striker or a wide attacker. Chelsea have made initial inquiries about his availability but have not made an offer.

Leverkusen signed him from Mainz for about £6.5million and it appears the Bundesliga club would like to more than double their money if he is sold to Chelsea.

They are discussing several potential deals, some of which might be dependent on whether they are in the Champions League next season.

Plans are in place to sign Porto forward Hulk – with the Portuguese club wanting to sell and prepared to waive his £80million release clause in favour of a deal worth about £32.5million – and his fellow Brazilian Lucas Moura, a 19-year-old midfielder who plays for Sao Paulo. Both players were targets for former manager Andre Villas-Boas, as was Schurrle.

Might be a bit much but clubs always seem to pull Chelsea for an extra few million quid. Certainly striker is going to be a position that will need to be backed up this summer. If we put all our eggs into one basket with Torres that could spell trouble if he doesn't provide consistency.

Looks like more like a 10-12mill player to me. Getting a player from German league is always risk and he isn't even one of the best players in the league. Lower transfer sum, lower expectations means better chance to succeed, see Marin.

However he is young German international and looks to have pace and the German trademark shot technique. And we always can use a guy who can put in penalties. That is in his dna.

Can't see it happening and I think we are not going build a team without a manager. Marin's signing came out of the blue.

RDM born in Switzerland and speaks fluent German, maybe he has a contract already? Or what about Joachim Low? Maybe he steps in after Euros 2012. Oh boy, conspiracy theories, love it.

As for Schurrle, where does he stand when you compare him to Podolski? What I fear is that he's better than Kalou, Malouda and Sturridge (duh), but not good enough to strengthen our team enough so that we can compete on four different fronts next season. However, he's in the right age-group and plays in the right position (inside forward or striker). We really need another Gudjohnsen who can play "everywhere".

I hope we sign him so we can say after he has scored "Schurrley we have won it now".....

shurrle looks like hecould be an interesting signing, there is a player from germany that i would like to sign, Julian Draxler from schalke, adittedly not see much of him, and seen him star in the germn cup final last season, from what ive heard his reputation has only increased since then. only 18 i think and an attacking midfielder, not sure what price he would be available, maybe germn-blue or spiller could could give me a more accurate assessment?

He looks decent in those clips, but I haven't really seen much else of him.

Why do the people who make these compilations always add a totally sh*te audio track?

Come on BB, not a Flo-Rida fan ha? A lot of those shots he seemed to miss aswell, and one took a huge deflection, surely he's scored better goals, and it looked like they were all before his Leverkuson days? Still I think he's a decent player with a bright future.

Haven't seen him play, so can't offer much in the way of opinion, but that youtube compilation didn't exactly leave me too excited..

Same boat. I know nothing about him, don't remember him when he played against us which doesn't bode well. Tbh, that video was very average, deflected goals and replaying the same stuff over and over. Doesn't fill me with confidence at all and the fact that I haven't heard of him doesn't help. For £15 seems like it wouldn't be worth it.

Read that Schurrle was preferred over Podolski in the National Team when Schurrle was at Mainz, but since Neverkusen and Schurrle has had a mediocre season Podolski is back in the first XI. He is however bankers in the squad for the Euros.

If he indeed is in the Euro's and he actually will feature it makes him pretty good player. German national team is very very good. They will win the World Cup soon if they have luck. Such a great lineup of young players.

I still stick to 10-12mill pricetag. He would be a risk buy IMO.

Only query I have is hes Germany and Bayern don't want him, usually any decent young player ends up their and only 15m it would be in their budget. Like others I've never seen him player on knowledge of him was on FM and he was quality as a winger ;)

I hope we sign him so we can say after he has scored "Schurrley we have won it now".....

And for anyone who remembers the Fifth Dimension:

'Schurrie down to a stoned-soul picnic'

Why are we looking at a Striker who has a lower goals/game ratio so far in his career than Kalou?

Potential?

Seems to me we're filling up our squad with "potential" players, hoping some of them make it. (Lukaku, Piazon, Romeu, Davilla, ). I dunno, seems a risky and expensive strategy.

He is a winger but can play as a striker. Initially he was Löws first choice as left wing, but since Neverkusen has had such a crappy season and Podolski has been dominant for Köln, Podolski is probably the first choice.

This Schurrle is extremely fast. I'm talking Ramires-fast with great dribbling skills and a typical German shot. After seeing some matches with him (I was unsure in the start of this thread) I would have him for 15 million, easy.

I quite like this transfer policy. Instead of buying the hyped players (like Hazard etc) we are looking for the next big thing, like Liverpool did with Torres in 07. And I mean, what can go wrong? If he flops we will probably get 10-12 million for him after 1-2-3 years. The risk is low and the possible gain is enormous.

I have a feeling, and this feeling is very good about this guy.

Exactly. Well put Ozz.

Yes, he was Löw's first choice but Podolski has been on a tear so it's hard for Joachim to leave him out. Schurrle will get playing time though. He adds more pace than Podolski.

He's another "runner". Kid has a motor and can run for days. Comparing him to Ramires as far as that goes is also accurate. Put him on the wing in Blue and expect to see him flourish.

For 15 million, I would definitely take a flyer on this kid.

We need squad balance and options more than we need superstars and Schurrle ticks all the boxes. For just over 20m, we'd be getting two young players capable of covering at forward, attacking midfield or on the wings, with very different characteristics. Marin is the kind of player you want when teams are sitting back with two banks of four. Schurrle is the kind of player you need when you're 1-0 up in a tight game, and his sheer speed stops teams from pressing high up.

I don't really care if he's a future super-star or not, but considering we paid nearly the same sum for a 27-year old Malouda without the speed who ended up giving us decent service, I'm thinking this would be a great target and one we can hopefully seal before the inevitable happens at the Euros and he becomes a 30m-rated player.
