Jose's big on giving him responsibility, forcing him to be the man. Di Maria, Sneijder, Cole and Ozil improved from being sideshow acts to proper playmakers under him and I have little doubt Hazard will be the same if he keeps up his improvement.

 

That passage of play at 2:31 is what we need to be recreating as much as possible every moment of the game. I have yet to see any fullback in this league dispossess Hazard in that situation and with a proper striker it's almost a guaranteed goal every game.

Ribery is nowhere near the Messi/Ronaldo status. Don't understand the love-in for him.

I said status I didn't say I personally rated him that high.

Chelsea can't let this player go. The more I see him play the more I think he will be the best in the world in 3-4 years time.

Visualizing Eden Hazard

 

Greetings! My name is Ted Knutson and I write about stats over at StatsBomb and occasionally on the Mirror Online. I created a new radar graph for Eden Hazard’s season so far earlier today, and ChelseaStats asked if I would say a few words about it.

 

I built these to help visualize player stats as something more than mere numbers or a collection of bar charts. Basically, I wanted to see if I could make player stats a touch less boring.

 

 

This is Hazard’s 2013-14 EPL season laid out on the Attacking Midfielder/Forward radar template. Shooting stats are across the top, passing stats across the bottom, and the left side has some “context” or “other” stats like dribbling, defensive output, etc. The boundaries here are peaks of player performance across the big 5 European leagues in the last 4.5 seasons. All of these stats are based on Opta information, and all of them have been normalized for time played (which is what “per 90” means).

 

So last year Messi had nearly 1.5 non-penalty goals, Ronaldo had 8 shots per 90 minutes, Marco Sau (who?) put 70% of his shots on target, etc. Technically, a couple of guys (notably Ribery and Draxler) have actually had more than 4 successful dribbles per 90, but that skewed the dribbles column so much that I cut it back.

 

Anyway…

 

What you see with Hazard this year is a lot of good stuff. His dribbling is obviously insane, and a non-penalty goal rate of .36 is good, but not insane for an attacking midfielder. Key Passes are also outstanding, and his assists would likely be a bit higher if he had better performing forwards in front of him.

 

The only real weaknesses in Hazard so far this year are his throughballs (which are the most likely type of pass to result in a goal, but may again be a product of who plays in front of him), and the dispossessions (which is the result of being a focal point of the attack and of dribbling a lot).

 

Here is Juan Mata’s 2012-13 season for comparison.

 

 

The two are actually very similar in shooting and passing stats, with Mata edging the key passes, but Hazard proving a better player at getting shots on target. The big difference between the two is that Hazard is a dribbling wizard, while Mata barely dribbles at all.

Yes, because his "potential" allows him to far exceed achievements like a quintuple and winning European Footballer of the Year.

 

It's amazing how some people think Hazard can become as good as Messi. Hazard is 23 now; Messi at age 23 was just getting ready to pick up his second World Footballer of the Year award when he picked up 47 goals and 14 assists in 53 matches. "Becoming as good" as Messi is out of the question by a great margin.

 

Hazard is brilliant but he is not the best footballer born in the 1990s.

In my honest opinion, I think Eden is an all round better player, also take into account he's performing in the toughest league in Europe week in week out.

I'd agree that Neymar has even more potential than Hazard, however like Hazard he tends to shirk the responsibility that his talent affords him. Over the last, Hazard has really stepped up the plate.

If Hazard wants to become the best, he'll have to step up in the CL.

I'd be surprised if Hazard doesn't win a Champions League in his career, but really who gives a f**k about the German Quintuple, pretty meaningless when 1 team just buys all their rivals best players ever year.

Hazard was pretty quiet when playing for Belgium against England the summer he signed for us if i remember correctly,doesn't really mean much.I think Neymar is quality and will show it at the world cup,still prefer Hazard though.

I think he's improved a lot since then though, but yeah the world cup will hopefully provide some tantalizing match ups with the likes of Messi/Ronaldo/Ribery/Neymar/Hazard/Robben/Reus all representing different nations.

Lots of Messi comparisons starting now. Maybe it's just me but having seen videos of Garrincha play, Hazard seems the modern day version of him.
