Our New Stadium

Featured Replies

I'm very intrigued by the badge thing. Could we really be about to change it back to the first badge I ever knew as a Chelsea fan? I quite like the current badge - certainly compared to Batesy's disected lion - but compared to what I think of as our original badge it really doesn't stand up. Looking at the crest now, even in unfamiliar 'slate and bronze', it truly is a thing of beauty. Pure class. This is important of course because if the badge is going to be used to decorate the new stadium (as per the image below) , it needs to be the right one...

I'm the same as you mate, its certainly got me thinking, hoping more like that our original badge will be re-introduced, i'd even accept it if it was just around the stadium & we kept our now badge for the brand & merchandising.

I like the badge we've got now as its obviously modelled on our original badge, i just wish it wasnt so cartoon like, i'm not keen on the staff the lion is holding as it looks like a lollipop because there's no gap at the top like in the original badge.

I don't know how true it is but I think I remember one of the arguments when Bates changed the old badge was that 'heraldic' images like the original lion couldn't be copyrighted and thus merchandising couldn't be protected etc. Don't know if that was BS or not?

That was the case, he had the hump because unoffical stall holders outside were selling merchandise with our original badges & the club was losing money on them.

The club now have also put a copyright on our badge & even our name, you'll see badges with things like "The Chels" on for example, it sticks in my throat a bit i must admit, the only badges i still look for are our 1953/86 & 1970s badges to buy.

This design would have suited the ikd Chelsea with it's cold, physical, gladiatorial style of play. Ruthless, efficient, brutal, uncaring.

This new Chelsea with it's dainty, tippy tappy none sense just doesn't go together with the menacing new design.

Aaaanywaay... Many years yet before it comes to fruition, though, if at all.

Was told at yesterday's game that the next CPO AGM is to be held on Friday, 29 January 2016. One of the guys I go to the football with had phoned up one of the CPO Board to ask when the AGM will take place. No doubt the redevelopment of the ground will be the main topic of discussion at the AGM.

I hope not. If you look at these 'before and after' images from the planning application I'd say that most of the neighbours are getting a view that is improved. The new building looks lower and more subtle- less of an eyesore. Plus there will be improved access to the tube station and no old buildings (apart from the stadium) are being demolished. I don't think there's anything to stir up any controversy with our plans.

A plus for us is the negative quote for the spuds stadium  "We object to the new proposed development because [it is] overbearing, out of scale and out of character with a redbrick Heritage High Road.

"The shiny glass and concrete stadium facility is now 10 storeys high and further forward than previously proposed."

Rubbish, its class & our badge now actually also has red...

De gustibus non est disputandum... The two badges are designs from different times which clearly shows. Neither of them is better or worse, all they are is different so it's just a matter of taste.

I don't think anyone will complain. It is certainly a better fit for the local area than the current stadium.

Someone always complains. This is Britain we're talking about. But I think it will be a relatively small minority. The club have done their job well.

Arsenal fans in disguise ;)

Having read through parts of the planning application it is obvious that they have done literally everything they could to enrich the local culture. They have inclined the roof structure as far as they could so that as much sunlight as possible is preserved and they have studied the bricks of all major buildings around to see what combination is best for the stadium so it blends in.

There is no other football club/sports club with this kind of approach. I can't see how someone could complain for a valid reason.

I think it's excellent, the brick gives it a proper 'London' feel. It looks similar to railway arches or victorian bridge engineering. It will blend in nicely with the surrounding area but still have a modern feel to it. Big thumbs up from me.

Im a bricklayer so love all the brickwork. Will defo try and get a start on that job and be involved in building it

There will be lots of complaints, that's inevitable.

Some will no doubt hate the design, regarding it as an eyesore. Thankfully in this sense it's pretty hidden from most viewpoints. The site becomes bigger, due to the walkways built over the railway lines, and along the East Stand this pushes the stadium closer towards the cemetery and residential streets.

Then we have Oswald Stoll. The walkway proposed from the station looks over the building. So many more spectators increases noise for the veterans. Their views are also impacted by the proposal.

The MH will be higher and that will impact views from behind that stand, where it is all residential. Then we have the impact on businesses. We move away for 3 years, say, and their income is affected. The club say they will make more money once we return but will they? Underneath the walkway from the Fulham Road there will be cafes and so forth, intent on taking some of that revenue, and the Millennium Hotel, the music venue and health spa are going, resulting in a loss of visitors. The club can't argue that the walkway from the station will decrease the number of spectators on the street and then argue there will be increased revenue for local businesses, that seems a bit contrary to me.

Having said that, I understand that a stadium of this standard, and the improved hospitality facilities, are likely to increase visitors on a daily basis, which should please local businesses.

Then we have the noise of a demolition and rebuild of this scale and how that will impact residents. I know the club are addressing traffic and parking issues but that will be another bone, and so on and so on. There will be tons of objections. This is generally a quiet residential area normally, as opposed to your typical stadium location, so it's a very delicate issue. 20000 more spectators won't be welcome, although the club appear to have done everything to address the issues and appease all the neighbourhood concerns.

Personally, because the building is so iconic, I would welcome it as a resident. I can see the efforts the club have made to factor in local concerns and I regard it as an outstanding bit of architecture that will enhance the area. Most clubs go for more modern designs. Look at Spurs for example and their proposals. A shiny, new sparkling stadium, spacious and state-of-the-art facilities. The trouble with these stadiums, as we see with Arsenal's, is that they become dated pretty quickly. Spurs' is just an updated version of Arsenal's, by the same architects. It's like a new version of the iPhone or the Playstration, sooner or later a new improved version comes along. Chelsea's design however is timeless and owes nothing to modern trends. It will be just as impressive in 100 years as it will be in 10. I'm proud of everybody concerned with this project. We couldn't have hoped for better.

I'm in love with it, I don't mind saying. I don't understand those who don't like it, though I respect their views.

Considering the restraints the club have had to work with, regarding height, space, egress, considering the local council and neighbouring homes and conservation areas, considering the fact there are properties on the site that don't belong to them, considering the fact the area doesn't require regeneration, etc etc, a truly astounding project has been proposed against all odds. We also have to bear in mind planning consent won't mean we can go ahead and build, as a whole lot more permissions will have to be obtained, as we are dealing with a lot more people than just the council.

Edit: All we can do is cross our fingers and support the club as much as possible. Proposals don't come much more impressive than this.

Hahaha... Carshalton Blue, I still maintain it is a veritable monstrosity, but to each his own! :)

Agree that the current one lacks a little originality. The thing is, I'd take a little uniformity over originality when it comes in that most unsightly form, much like below:

Back on topic though, the stadium design is starting to grow on me, having seen some of the pics again.

The top down view, as someone mentioned, does it quite a bit of injustice, which in itself is a mute point, really... So yeah...
