October 1, 201411 yr When he signed I remember calling him the German Ramires. Mainly pace and energy (makes intelligent runs as well) but will be let down by his technical ability. When surrounded by Hazard, Oscar, Fabregas and Matic he struggles to play the quick 5 yard passes, and doesn't have great vision. Willian may not be ruthlessly efficient just yet but he fits seamlessly into our current midfield. Edited October 1, 201411 yr by venom2011
October 2, 201411 yr His biggest asset is goal scoring, when he's not he looks a bit ordinary because he doesn't create much. By far, Willian will start this weekend. However if Schurrle manages to break the drought, he may just get on a roll and convert a draw into a win, a close game into a hrashing.
October 2, 201411 yr He absolutely destroyed Arsenal last year so he's a decent option to start, but I think Willian probably deserves it based on the performance against Villa. The thing is that I love the positions Schurrle gets into. He had a bad couple of matches against Bolton and Lisbon but he continued to pop up in the right spots and that's a great sign - it's when players stop creating chances for themselves that you have to worry. His attitude is exemplary and he's going to be important for us this season so a couple of bad matches is nothing to worry about.
October 4, 201411 yr I like the lad. But i still see him as a "super sub" But his best performances have all come from starting.
October 4, 201411 yr Do you think Jose has lost a little bit of trust in him given he didn't track his men for the City and Swansea goals?
October 4, 201411 yr Do you think Jose has lost a little bit of trust in him given he didn't track his men for the City and Swansea goals? He still started him against Sporting.
October 4, 201411 yr I mostly like him because he adds something different. It's good to have that wide variety in your players, most of our players look for the pass rather than the shot where Andres instincts are to get a goal, he has really good movement to.
October 4, 201411 yr There is no doubt the guy has got talent and I think he will get better!but at the moment I think he is trying a bit too hard to impress knowing fine well he is fighting it out with Willian for that same spot in the first eleven.would still like to see willian given a fair crack at the number 10 roll especially when Jose quoted him and Oscar to be the players for that position in the whole 'mata saga'
October 5, 201411 yr He had a good start to the season but has faded in the last few games. Awful against Bolton. Worse against Sporting. Dreadful today.
October 5, 201411 yr Against Bolton I would say he was unlucky, keeps pulled of a couple of great saves to deny him that night. I thought his movement was good today but the final ball was poor. I do think Willian will start our next match though.
October 5, 201411 yr Probably wise that Willian starts our next match and even Salah could be given a chance. Schurrle will be back though.
October 5, 201411 yr Unlucky for Schurrle that Joachim Low was at the ground today. Good news for us though - will probably have a rest during the international break.
October 5, 201411 yr I don't think he did all that bad. He wasn't at his best at going forward, but him and Ivanovic completely nullified the Arsenal left flank. He seemed to be tracking every single runner and ball, I think it's no surprise that Sanchez was so inefficient by how we were deployed on the right. Hopefully he gets his scoring touch back and maybe the break will do him good.
October 5, 201411 yr I like him...can blow hot and cold and at the moment seems a bit low on confidence...but you know he can pop up with a goal at any minute and he offers us something different to the others
October 6, 201411 yr He had a good start to the season but has faded in the last few games. Awful against Bolton. Worse against Sporting. Dreadful today. I thought his overall play against Bolton was fine, he just lacked a finishing touch. Against Sporting he was pretty poor and was rightfully subbed around the 55 minute mark. Against Arsenal though i thought he had an ok game. He did exactly what was asked of him but again just lacked the composure in the final 3rd. His movement is great though and he is still getting the chances, i feel it's only a matter of time before Schurrle starts hitting the net again.
October 6, 201411 yr I think he lacks composure full-stop, Scott. Whenever he gets the ball in space and a defender backing off him, he just doesn't really know what to do with it. A great example is when he recieved the ball on the left wing channel and ran at Callum Chambers (who should've received a second yellow for the resulting challenge); it's hard to argue he intended to beat him that way, he seemingly stumbled the ball past him! Schurrle is at his best when he's not thinking too much about things, when he's playing one-touch or making those 3rd-man runs behind defenders. As soon as you give him time on the ball however he just seems to panic. Jogi Loew certainly gets the best out of him but he doesn't necessarily have to play Schurrle against 10-man deep defenses. October 6, 201411 yr Becoming a frustrating player for me, he doesn't have the ability of the other AM's on the ball but his movement and willingness to gamble on runs has always been impressive. However yesterday he was constantly taking up the same positions as costa, intact I feel he inhibited costa some what yesterday. Willian may not have the goal threat that Andre carrys but overall I think the team will do better with Willian
October 6, 201411 yr Certains games people are going to want Willian to play and certain games your going to want Schurrle to play and i feel it will always be like this. Its a shame we cant take Schurrle best attributes and Willians best attributes and mold it into one player. I don't really know what the discussion is about on Schurrle, yes he is inconsistent we know this and i feel he will always be this way because he's not massively talented on the ball. But one thing he will be consistent on is that he will always score us goals because his finishing and movement is too good not too. There are loads of fast skilful technical attacking mids out there but there aren't many like Schurrle, i can only think of Thomas Muller which shows Schurrle valuable asset and attributes. October 6, 201411 yr Willian trumps Schurrle in every department barring his attacking movement. Willian is quicker, much better technically and tactically. When we signed Schurrle I called him the German Ramires and nothing has changed my mind. In tight, high-paced games, with little space to exploit he becomes absolutely mediocre because his technique lets him down, and he can't keep up with Hazard, Oscar and Fabregas. Great squad player to have but he needs to step it up quite a bit to stake a permanent claim.
October 7, 201411 yr I agree with the people who've said that he's overthinking things and trying to do too much. He came into the season with too much pressure on himself from the WC success. I didn't like the signing initially, but his eagerness and passion is endearing to me (bit like Luiz). Willian will probably be first choice for the next month or so, but we'll need both in order to win the league.
