Andre Schurrle

I think it is depression. Robin Van Persie is know to be on anti-depressant and he is a super star. Some of the biggest stars deal with it. I deal with PTSD, I just dont let it get to me to put me in depression. Its a part of my life now and I accept who I am, what I do and all my flaws. Thats the only way to deal with mental illness really.

Slightly worrying:

“I don’t want to say what the medical name for the illness was but the symptoms are hard to get over. While they may have gone away, it took a toll on my body and it takes lot of time to get back to match fitness."

Hopefully it was actually flu or something similar rather than a mental issue because as has been highlighted in recent years depression and the like are extremely serious.

Either way wishing Andre well and I'm glad to see him back in the side.

Sounds like glandular fever. It can take a long time to recover from it and symptoms can make people bed-ridden for a while.

The thing is, if it was glandular fever, they would have to quarantine him from the team for at least the first couple of months. You just dont want to risk it spreading, also, exercise can be very dangerous due to potential damage to the spleen. When I had it our doctor refused to let me play or practice for over a month and I had to stay away from the team until I was no longer contagious.

This sounds like something we joked about in med-school when trying to give a diagnosis, "if you hear hoofbeats, think of horses not zebras"

So man flu sounds like a good bet :laugh2:

That's what I'm thinking too.  Knew a girl that had it in school and she was out for months.

Speaking of girls...who's the one in your avatar?  I like her style

ah, thanks for the clarification.

Her name is Verena Stangl and she's a German model!

Words on the injury/virus from the man himself.

"A persistent virus and influenza as well as muscular problems put me out of action for some time.

It certainly was a mistake that I tried to exercise again and again during this period of illness. It was only after I forced my body to take a break and had fully recovered, when I finally started with my running sessions whose intensity I increased continuously. Durability and mileage are prerequisites for a good game. Furthermore I added units in the weight room for the build-up of strength. I had to deal with an extensive training-programme, which was the reason why I reluctantly had to cancel the international matches against Gibraltar and Spain."

Comes on for Willian, instantly makes a clear cut goal scoring opportunity for Costa which Willian couldn't do in his last 5-6 games.

This lad has to play rather than that overpaid workhorse.

I understand the criticism for willian, but maybe he is tired. He consistently makes up so much ground during a game that it wouldn't surprise me at all. I mean these guys are human after all, which many people seem to forget when criticising them; the human body can only take so much.

I dont understand the criticism of Willian. Ok he doesnt score loads of goals but he does work for the team. In our current squad there isnt anyone better to replace him imo. Schurrle isnt good enough and Salah hasnt been given enough time to show what he can do.

Schurrle in his last 3 games have scored 2 and created more than Willian in his whole last 10 games this season or maybe more. Ok he isn't good enuf to start.

Schurrle wastes so many chances its crazy. He doesnt play with his head up looking for the better ball. Its just head down and kick the ball towards goal. Im sure if Willian did that then he would get some goals but Willian is a smarter player and looks for the better ball. In my opinion anyway.

Deserves to the start the game against West Ham in my opinion, he's looking like he's found some form following his spell out of the team and is looking lively every time he is getting on the pitch either scoring or creating decent chances.

The only thing I have seen Willian look for in the last games is a back pass. Both him and Shurrle lack vision, but Shurrles movement and positioning off the ball is far superior in the final third. When we play Mikel like we did yesterday, I would have used Oscar, Ramires or Shurrle instead of Willian for balance, because Willian offers very little compared to those three on counterattacks.

Willian doesn't play the better ball though, his assist numbers are hardly record breaking. Schurrle came on and within 5 minutes laid it on a plate for Costa when IMO, he could have quote justifiably hit it with his left foot.

Willian did that last night and didn't get close to scoring.

In fact last season they both averaged the same number of shots per game (1.8 and 1.9) except Schurrle got double the number of goals of Willian (8 against 4).

People make excuses for Willian because he's never scored goals, so if a player is sh*t in attack then you have to exaggerate his defensive/workrate/creative abilities.

Truth is he's not a creative player. People assume because he's a Brazilian attacking midfielder that he must be touched by the shiny hard creative dick of Kaka or Ronaldinho or Rivaldo. He's a second-rate Denilson on his best day in that regard (ok Denilson was more of a wide player but you get the point).
