Diego Costa to Chelsea

Featured Replies

I love him and all, but he needs to keep calm. He wasn't the only player who was provoked by Everton players but he was the only one who let them rile him up and decided to act like a d*ck. Just watch other teams use his temper and reputation against him. Refs won't be kind to him.

You mean calm like Howard, that should work. :face_palm:

Howard isn't a Chelsea player and he doesn't have Costa's dirty reputation. Cesc was provoked more than Costa: Mirallas stamped on his arm, clearly wanting to provoke him, and Cesc dealt with the situation in a firm but composed manner. Costa really needs to keep his temper in check and think long-term.

Diego finding out about Everton's offside trap

I've been looking at this for about 5 minutes and I still can't look away, it keeps drawing me back in.

If anything he riled them up and was calm as anything, howard got booked and should have been sent off. His booking was very harsh.

This is what I wrote in the other Costa thread, the one that looks as if it's about to disappear into the backwaters of the Shed End:

IF Costa can maintain anything like his early goalscoring form,  then that £32 million price tag is going to loolk like a bit of a bargain. When I say "if", I'm not doubting Costa's ability or his goalscoring touch, just adding a touch of sod's law type caution.

There are so many things that can go wrong, from injury to suspension to loss of form. Naturally I'm hoping that Costa will be fit and available and in a rich vein of form throughout the season, but by the same token, I'm not going to get carried away on the basis of the first three games of the season.

I'd add that there's a very real danger of Costa being targeted, both by referees because of his rep, and by opponents, because of another aspect of his rep. We've seen signs of this already, on both counts.

Generally speaking I've got a lot of time for Martinez, but in the aftermath of yesterday's match, he's been saying that "Costa needs to learn respect. " Sorry, but in this particular instance, Martinez needs to shut the f**k up, mind his own business and take a look at some of his own players. Who was it, for instance, who was going out of his way to provoke and niggle Costa throughout the game? And then we have Tim Howard. If there was ever a case of a player who needs to "learn respect" and to control himself after conceding a goal, then it was Tim Howard.

I'm not going to go down the "if that was a Chelsea player" route, because that's not what I'm getting at here. But I'd be very surprised if the situation had been reversed - if it was Diego Costa who'd grabbed Tim Howard by the throat - if Diego Costa hadn't been given a straight red.

What this does mean, is not so much that Costa needs to learn respect (f**k 'em all), as he needs to be aware of the lengths that opposition players will go to wind him up, and of the possibility that referees will act based on his reputation rather than his actions.

It's a good job we've got Mourinho running the show. Jose'll sort him.

I agree he needs to be made aware of that if he isn't already. Surely he isn't that nieve though?Genuine question here, was he not targeted a lot in the Spanish league last term?

I think Costa's temperament is a double edge sword to some degree, I like that he has passion and gets worked up, it could also work to our advantage.

Whatever happens I just hope that Costa uses his edge sparingly and where the situation suits.

Let's see, we paid 32 million for him, he has few if any weaknesses (maybe his headers could be better, but that's just nitpicking) and has put high-quality opposition to the sword. I know it's only 3 games in, but what's not to like?

im actually surprised at the lack of publicity Howard being a nutter is getting. Ive not seen/heard it once today and ive been watching sky sports since the liverpool game

I thought Costa done ok with his reactions yesterday. I don't think he overreacted to the niggling he was getting. Of course you have to have some reaction, can't let them think they can walk over you. He didn't raise his hands or put his head in anyone. His non reaction to that whirling dervish Howard coming at him was perfect,in fact I heard on the radio today from a former pro, can't remember who, phrasing Costa how he dealt with Howard.

Coleman deserved the little touch that Costa give him after the own goal and really don't think he was that bothered and probably realised he deserved it, it was only Howard who went off on one.

I think it is good that Costa is getting all this publicity and that refs will see that he is behaving himself, that he has been wrongly booked twice and that he does not the deserve the reputation that has preceded him.

Fantastic start from Diego, how refreshing it is to see a proper no.9 leading the line again. I was very skeptical about his chances of success when we signed him but I think it's fair to say I've changed my tune. However, as has been pointed out, he's only played 4 games for us so far; Mutu look like a worldbeater after a handful of games too. So long as Diego can keep fit, work hard and channel his aggression properly then he could have a huge season for us.

One thing I do have to say is that Mutu and Costa are different types of players; Mutu was more of a second striker with a pretty good goal-scoring record, whereas Costa is a proper centre-forward. Even in Serie A, Mutu never reached 20 goals in a season. Also, Mutu had JFH and Crespo to contend with, both of whom were purer goalscorers. Plus Costa isn't a cokehead...as far as we know anyway.

What is with all the fuss over Costa's 'antics' at Everton I keep seeing from other fans. Saying he's a hothead and has no humility, even though Coleman did his best to wind him up with niggly fouls the entire game and Diego didn't even react. Thought it was a ridiculous yellow he received. He took it extremely well for someone notorious for getting angry at these kinds of things... if someone does that to Suarez the little rat bites them!

And as for taunting Coleman after the OG, I have to say that makes me love the man even more. Doesn't retaliate to Coleman's pathetic antics and then rubs it in when the idiot puts it in his own net. Nothing wrong with that at all.

He's absolutely fantastic. A menace all around the pitch with an eye for goal. He's powerful, fairly quick, a natural finisher and gives absolutely everything to the cause. He's a Mourinho player if there has ever been one. We have the perfect mix this season and I can't see us not winning the title.

Loving that the bookies have slashed his prices for the top scorer so quickly!

Yep fair point. Just have to remember our track record with strikers isn't the best and to not get carried away. But the initial signs are extremely encouraging.

Now we need to create a proper chant for Diego.

Costa trained in MMA whilst growing up and can legitimately handle himself also. I reckon he will be as far from a cokehead as possible.

Where did you hear that, and any links ?
