Favourite Abramovich Era victory over Arsenal?

Featured Replies

With the recent 6-0 demolition of Arsenal this past weekend it got me thinking how dominant we have been over the Gooners in the Abramovich years, a record of P28 W15 D7 L6 (I think). Prior to that in the Premier League years we had a mere 3 wins over Arsenal. A 2-1 win in 1995 in the league, a 3-1 league cup semi-final victory (the best of that era over Arsenal as we took on a full team) and a 5-0 demolition of Arsenal's kids the following year in the same competition. Other than that best we could get were draws but mostly defeats and it wasn't until that magical night at Highbury back in 2004 that our luck changed. So I ask everyone which one was your favourite?

2004 Champions League quarter final 2nd leg - Arsenal 1 Chelsea 2

The night we beat "the invincibles", after a first leg draw that we really should have won we were written off by pundits and media alike, one could certainly not blame them for thinking so after a poor record against Arsenal including two defeats already that season and this game was at Highbury. A ground we hadn't won at at the time since 1989 (I believe) , Reyes gave Arsenal the lead before Frank Lampard levelled, the tie was at a stalemate until Wayne Bridge got on the end of Gudjohnsens wonderful pass and struck home beautifully to give us the victory that we deserved.

2005 Community Shield - Chelsea 2 Arsenal 1

This was the tie when Didier Drogba opened his account against the Gunners with two superb goals, showing pure strength and determination. Drogba terrorised the Gunners defence and for not been subbed might have gotten more. Fabregas pulled one back for the Gunners but it was far too late.

2005/06 Premier League Chelsea 1 Arsenal 0

A moment of luck went for us in a forgettable game, Frank Lampard's instinctive quick freekick and Drogba's poor control off his shin actually went the right way for us as it rolled in past Lehman. One can argue had Drogba took the proper control he would have scored anyway but the finish was a hilarious moment for us Chelsea fans and a bitter one for Arsenal fans.

2005/06 Premier League Chelsea 2 Arsenal 0

Our last game at Highbury and one to remember, we put behind all the dark memories of not winning there in the league by winning convincingly 2-0 against an Arsenal team in decline. Arjen Robben and Joe Cole both scored superb goals that day and their midfield was schooled by Frank Lampard.

2007 League Cup Final Chelsea 2 Arsenal 1

A fantastic final played by Arsenal's young team against the experience of Chelsea. Arsenal's youngsters put in a spirited performance and took the lead through Theo Walcott. Chelsea struck back through Didier Drogba but the game will most likely be remembered for the shocking knockout suffered by the fully commited John Terry and the melee on the pitch between the two teams which saw Mikel, Toure and Adbeyor all sent off. Thankfully Chelsea won the game when Didier Drogba hit one of the best headers of his career to make it 2-1.

2007-2008 Premier League Chelsea 2 Arsenal 1

One of the best football matches I've ever watched and my personal favourite. Arsenal took the lead through Bacary Sagna and we just couldn't seem to score. Avram Grant was meeted with chants of "you don't know what you doing" when he subbed Michael Ballack and brought on Nicolas Anelka and Belletti. But it turned out to be a great move as the two combined to set up Drogba's two match winning goals. This was probably Drogba's best performance against Arsenal in his career in my opinion, he terrorised them all day long and was unlucky to only end the match with two goals.

2009 FA Cup Semi Final Chelsea 2 Arsenal 1

Arsenal took the lead through Theo Walcott before Florent Malouda equalised, of course that man again Didier Drogba terrorised Arsenal and struck via a dumb decision from Arsenal goalkeeper Fabianksi.

2008-09 Premier League Arsenal 1 Chelsea 4

This was dubbed the battle of the two Champions League semi finalists and Chelsea did not disappoint in responding to our contreversial mid week loss to Barcelona. Probably the finest performance by the team under Guus Hiddink's reign, Chelsea were rampant and so was Anelka striking twice in the match, Alex and a Kolo Toure own goal created by some great work from ex Arsenal left back Ashley Cole. Bentdner replied for Arsenal but by then it was too late and the damage was done.

2009-10 Premier League Arsenal 0 Chelsea 3

Another great performance by us at the emirates, one in which we completely nullifed Arsenal. All the pre match talk was could new Arsenal CB Thomas Vermalaen handle Didier Drogba. By the end of the first half we got our answer as Drogba had scored and made a nuisance of himself for Vermalean's own goal. Ashley Cole was instrumental in both those goals as Didier Drogba killed the game off late on with a super freekick.

2009-10 Premier League Chelsea 2 Arsenal 0

All the pre-match talk was about Didier Drogba and his record against the Gunners. Arsenal clearly fearful of Drogba were unable to handle him again and he killed them off early in the first half with a destructive double.

2010-11 Premier League Chelsea 2 Arsenal 0

Drogba was once again a nuisance scoring his final goal against the Gunners, this was one of his smartest goals ever backheeling it into the net at a tight angle. Alex killed off Arsenal late on with a piledriver of a freekick. Ramires also put in a MOTM performance.

2012-2013 Premier League Arsenal 1 Chelsea 2

This was the game where Graeme Souness compared us to Barcelona, we really were that good. The Barcelona comparisons came from our midfield trio Mata, Oscar and Hazard's performance, Fernando Torres opened the scoring with a Drogba type goal before Gervinho equalised. Juan Mata's freekick evaded everyone and went into Arsenal's net. It was a game where we out Arsenaled Arsenal.

2012-2013 Premier League Chelsea 2 Arsenal 1

A big win under interim manager Rafa Benitez, Juan Mata scored early on and Frank Lamoard doubled that lead with a penalty after Arsenal Goalkeeper Szcezny took down Ramires. Theo Walcott replied for the visitors to give us a nervy finish.

2013 League Cup Chelsea 2 Arsenal 0

Both sides made changes and Chelsea showed the squad depth we had, a quick thinking Apzilicuetta gave us the lead after Arsenal defense yet again became a shambles. Juan Mata settled the match with a superb strike.

2013-2014 Premier League

The most recent match between the two sides abd in Arsenal's case the worst. Chelsea were rampant right from the word go, Arsenal could not match our ferocious pace. Goals from Eto'o, Schurrle, Hazard (Penalty)' Oscar (x2) and Salah (with his debut goal) gave us the win. This game was not without controversy either, in a bizarre monent Kieran Gibbs was sent off from a handball by Oxlaide-Chamberlsin. Shicking from the ref but going down to ten men cannot fool anyone that Chelsea were by far the superior side.

So that's it, I'm pretty sure I got them all and hopefully my knowledge is correct. I reckon most will most likely go for the 6-0 but some must feel differently and have some wonderful memories from other occasions.

Got to be the Champions league win hasn't it, it was the beginning of the end for Arsenal's domination over us, the beginning of our most successful spell in the clubs history and the start of Arsenal's decline.

for me it was April 6, 2004 in the UCL @ highbury the library. le arse totally looked down at us then. It was the beginning of the end for those bums. It was the shot over the bow to let them know what was going to be going down in the future. However this Saturday's win was pretty fun w/ the Chelsea giving arsene a nice gift for his 1000th match  Yes, we want wenger to stay

Really? I'm sure if you looked on youtube you could fine some highlights or just the goals

Yeah found some earlier, seems vaguely famiiliar. To be honest I have a terrible memory for football matches. I can probably tell you more scores from the 02/03 season before Roman, than I could even for this current season.

Ha ha I get that mate, sometimes I'll see a player and someone will go didn't he play for Chelsea? And I often can't actually remember ha ha

So many to choose from...

Probably beating them in the CL as wins over Arsenal were a rarity back then, I still remember nearly hitting the roof when Bridge scored, and Claudio's reaction. The cup final was nice too, and the 3-0 and 4-1 thumpings at the Emirates.

CL when bridge scored.  I don't think any of us expected anything, plus Arsenal had the edge over us for so long in the LEague adn Cup competitions that it was such a huge weight of the shoulders for us, and a real statement of us taking over from them.

Fantastic night, and why - despite all of the JT nonsense - I can't ever hate Wayne Bridge (Claudio's reaction alone was worth it!)

Ranieri was awesome.

CL quarter final. In a pub in Paris with all the French people shouting for Arsenal and found out later that those shouting for Chelsea were MU supporters! Also the one where there was a great pic of Almunia splattered across the goal after a close range Drogba score.

A tossup between the Champions League win (which broke their hex over us) and the 2-1 under Robbie D when we played them off the park at the Emirates, we were absolutely fantastic that day.

Watched the CL game in the pub with my brother-in-law who is an Arsenal fan. Gave him loads of  stick. Spoke to my sister the next day and she told me that he was in a foul mood when he got home. She was killing herself with laughter.

A slight aside with games against Arsenal. Not a win but a 1-1 draw in December 2006. Essien's great strike from about 30 yards out. The way it curled into the net. Was in the MHU and had a great view.

Ranieri was awesome.

I never warmed to him ya know, probably because he replaced the great Viali who was my fave manager. Also he proved he wasn't up to a top job in the end with some truly head scratching decisions.

There have been some top draws against them too. That Essien goal was amazing and we really should have won that game, I remember we dominated them that day.

There was also that great game at Highbury that was 2-2 neutrels must have really enjoyed that. Remember going mad when JT scored the best header of all time and mad in a different way when Henry took that quick freekick that shouldn't have been allowed.

Not sure if this is my favourite victory but sure is one of my favourite Chelsea over Arsenal moments

"Good-bye premiership, good-bye self-respect..." - Pretty much sums up Arsenal's last decade.

My favourite is the cl game closely followed by the 3-1 cup win in Luca Viallis firs game as manager.
