The Shed End Player of the Season 2013/14 - MOTM Analysis

Featured Replies

That time of year has come again - it is time to pick our player of the season and in true democratic style, the Shed End has spoken. For those who are new, throughout the season we vote on our MOTM in every game, and following in Loz's tradition I have been tallying up the overall scores in an Excel spreadsheet. It is time to find out whether we as a forum are well-schooled in the nuances of football or whether we are still as clueless as that time Torres won.

Now you are all on the edge of your seats I will build the tension yet further (as if that were possible):

Total number of games: 57
Total number of votes cast: 2806
Average number of votes per game: 49
Game with highest number of votes cast: City (A PL): 107
Game with lowest number of votes cast: Palace (A PL): 19

We have three measuring sticks this year: total number of MOTM awards, total number of votes, and a points system in which the player finishing 1st receives 3 points, the player in 2nd receives 2 points and the 3rd place receives 1 point. However, there is a clear winner in all three categories:

Eden Hazard is The Shed End's 2013/14 Player of the Season.

So via most MOTM awards:

1) Hazard (8 awards)

2) Oscar (6 awards)

3) Azpilicueta (5 awards)

3) Willian (5 awards)

3) Schurrle (5 awards)

Via total votes:

1) Hazard (469 votes)

2) Torres (247 votes)

3) Oscar (222 votes)

4) Willian (201 votes)

5) Azpilicueta (180 votes)

Via 'points':

1) Hazard (43 points)

2) Willian (35 points)

3) Oscar (31 points)

4) Azpilicueta (26 points)

5) Cahill (23 points)

Other stats (feel free to stop reading at any point):

Premier League:

Hazard was comfortably our best player again with 7 awards. He is followed by Oscar and Schurrle with 4 each and then by Terry and Eto'o with 3 each.

Champions League:

Azpilicueta is way ahead with 3 awards; Torres, Schurrle, Cech, Luiz, Ramires, Oscar, Mikel and Willian all follow with 1 each. Hazard interestingly has none!

FA Cup/League Cup:

Only 6 games played overall between both cups. In the FA Cup Oscar, Hazard and Cahill were awarded 1 each. In the League Cup Willian received 2 awards, followed by Torres with 1.

Against the top 7:

A fairly interesting spread here. Terry, Torres and Eto'o each received 2 MOTM awards, followed by Eto'o, Cahill, Mikel, Hazard, Matic, Schurrle and Kalas with 1 each. This would have been the top 6 but I figured Man Utd was a bigger fixture than Everton regardless of league position.

It seems like the people have quite clearly spoken - Hazard is comfortably our most popular player this season, regardless of method of measurement. A couple of years ago I remember Torres winning; I thought the points method might help to level the playing field and give us a 'get-out clause' should the results be embarrassing.

Here is the full table if anyone is interested:

Torres got the 2nd most votes this season?  ::clap2::  ::clap2::

Believe it or not, he was in fact winning the votes category until Hazard rallied around Christmas time.

Sympathy vote, when he plays well Chelsea fans (myself included) are quick congratulate him.

Same for Mikel, that FA Cup match against Derby he was sublime and it leaves you wanting more performances of that standard.

Someone like JT who was excellent throughout the season will often lose out on MOTM votes to attacking players if we win.

Surprised to see Mikel get the same or more awards than Terry, Cahill, Eto'o, Cech, Ramires, Matic, Luiz etc etc.

Well for my money he has been better than Ramires and Luiz this season, but he won the away game against Everton (which we lost), the game against Fulham (in which he scored). I suppose his 'finest hour' (so to speak) was the MOTM award for the first leg against Atletico.

Thanks for doing that mate. Still in shock that Torres got so many votes. Ludicrous really.

Thought Matic would have gotten more, he was our best player by streets after he signed, but he didn't play CL.

Out of interest Plokkers in what match did Bertrand get his point?

Not surprised he won against Fulham, that was brilliant - "he scores when he wants".

You do not appreciate what you got and till it is gone.

Not surprised due to his performances - surprised because from what I've read on here no one seems to rate him.

A lot of Torres' votes are generally sarcastic ones though.

Do you think we need a Sarcastic Player of the Year? Or a So Not Our Player of the Year? I do like the acronym of SNOPY.

Great thread ploks, willian being so high up was a bit surprising considering the crap he gets on here.

Nicely done Ploks...good to see the voting over the season giving us something to think about in the close season.

I was there!  I saw it! One of the few occasions in my life that I've hugged and high-fived total strangers!

Good effort for doing the donkey work to calculate the results, interesting stuff.

Could you imagine if Torres had won it (again)..... that really would have been embarrassing...
