Would you want less foreign stars at chelsea to help England team

Featured Replies

The debate is bound to increase after another World Cup failure about lack of English players in top flight...just wondering if chelsea fans would sacrifice some foreign players for the potential good of the England team...I have a feeling the answer is no, particularly after how our English contingent have been treated over the years (lamps, Cole and Jt)

Nope.

If they're good enough to challenge for titles with Chelsea they'll be good enough to win a a World Cup.

The last thing England needs is for the top teams to lower their standards.

What I wouldn't want us to do is buy players just because they English.

However what I wouldn't mind seeing is us not signing a foreign player until the age of 18/19/20. Would be great to have an academy of English talent. And I, like many others have called for, would like our youth products to be given more first team opportunities. Kalas' performance at Anfield and Omeuro's at this World Cup (yes I know they are foreign) should serve as encouragement of giving our youth products a chance.

Mourinho's system is of such that any player can break in with the correct work ethic and mindset, so I don't think giving young English players a chance will seriously alter our performance.

Even if it would, I wouldn't mind so much. There's something enjoyable about seeing players succeed who grew up with the club.

The whole "too many foreign players" argument is so cheap and easy used by people to hide the fact English players are not good enough because of grass root failings. i wonder what those who blame England’s disappointments on foreigners think of England’s failure to qualify for a major between 1970-1982 and 1994?

I think its important to have a good mix of british players wether it helps the national team or not.

I think there defiantly should be a much tighter control on home grown players in squads these days.

For me a minimum of 4 british players should be in the match day squad for every premier league team. To ensure that clubs keep their british core and youngsters get a chance to make a name for themselves instead of just making up the numbers for home grown rules.

Though it doesnt help that british players are going for astronomical fees. Lallana is getting touted for the same price as fabregas. Because of this top clubs shop abroad for talent. Whereas someone like Ross Barkley shows some glimpses of brilliance will go for 30million + his real value at his age.

I agree with this 100%.

When England fail and people blame the foreign players this is the exact thing i say to them and everytime it leaves them speechless.

They blame the foreigners now but who did they blame before then ?

I'd like to see some of the Premier League's massive profits invested into better training for youth coaches and better facilities and equipment for grassroots teams.

A big fat NO for me.

There is no way i would want Chelsea to be weaker to make the England team stronger.

After the way the FA have treated JT they can go f**k themselves... harrrummmphhh !

My personal opinion is that England's problems are a lot deeper than the number of foreign players and the Premier League.

I think that it's a grass roots problem, the way we play and the attributes we encourage in England (get stuck in, get rid of it etc etc).

The hyping of English youth players... Just look at Luke Shaw, he's had two season where he has played competently and now suddenly he's going to become one of the World's most expensive full backs.

Basically I don't think a small rule range is going to suddenly make England better at international level.

Exactly. In the past top flight English teams have had players from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. We've had plenty of Scottish players over the years for example. Players from those four countries aren't English and therefore are foreign. Can't recall too many complaints - if any - about players from other parts of the U.K. and the ROI keeping English players out of club teams. In 1986, Liverpool won the FA Cup without one Englishman in the team. Steve McMahon was a sub but didn't get on the pitch.

As much as I like seeing English players play for Chelsea I dont really care about international football. I just cant get excited for England games like I do with Chelsea.

People I follow on Twitter (Ricky and Gem) stay up to watch the late games but I really cant be arsed.

Roll on pre season thats what I say!

Not because of England but because of Chelsea. I think a core of English players is a good core for an English club.

Agreed.

I think we lose our identity if we don't replace Lamps, Terry and Cole with English players.

Not me.

I agree that a core of English players  could be beneficial to the club - always assuming we could find enough English players who are actually good enough for the team, and if this English core should also of benefit to the national side, then so be it. But no way should the club adopt a policy of favouring English players because of their nationality.

Club before country every time.

No. I feel the problem with the England set up lies with the FA not doing enough to encourage youth development.

As stated above, I really liked us having an English core, as it was nice to have some homegrown top class talent. However the way our players have been treated by the media etc has left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Not really but then I'm not English.

Every top club has foreign stars riddled in their ranks, sure we could do with more Englishmen but let's face it they are crazily overpriced (see Shaw and Rooney at 18).

Would you rather pay £10-15 million on a proven palyer abroad or take the chance on a young prospect in England that will cost more?

I really like World Cup football. I will always support England when they're on, even if it is more often than not in vain.

But it will never come close to watching us in the Champions League (think Demba Ba putting PSG out, Jose sprinting down the touchline, goosbumps) .

However, I would like to see more English players in our team- not to help England- but just because we are an English club after all and it would be nice to see at least 3 or 4 English players to remind us of that. Now Cole is leaving, Lamps has left, JT is only going to last another 2 years max, Bertrand will be sold...we will only have Cahill left.

As a Chelsea fan first and foremost, I couldnt give a damn whether we have English national team players in the squad. I think the extra undeserved pressure and attention paid to them is unwarranted and frankly ridiculous I cannot stand arse wipes who think Lampard is crap but stand by Stevie Me as some sort of legendary figure we cant live without. I cannot stand this BS their English, we must pull them down until they live down to our expectiations, ala Rooney. (Rooney is not sh*t, but he's not the Messiah, hes still the best player England have at the moment)

Im enjoying as much watching Chelsea players in other national teams, as I ever have watching England, and 2012 was my favourite international tournament since my first in 1996.

I love the fact that JT has retired, which BTW coincided with an upturn in his Chelsea performances, could it be that the extra rest prolong his career? If Lampard had done that 2 years ago, would he be leaving Chelsea now, maybe not because hes not injured often, unlike Terry was, but its food for thought,

That being said, I would like to see a blanket international transfer ban on all players Under 21, unless their parents move for non footballing reasons. Maybe it would drop the level of the U20s compeitions in England, but its not like Kakuta and Davilla have exactly shone.

I really dont give a rats ass about the England national team. The media discuss this after every tournament its boring. Start producing more technically gifted players would be a start.

Yeah, G. Lineker was talking about all the great youth prospects in the English team and Hansen (Love him or hate him) was having none of it, saying something like "I don't see one player there that will become world class".

That's why I can't buy the foreign players argument, if you're good enough, you'll play.

Not English so I don't know but what do people really expect? England should just produce a Ronaldo or Messi out the blue?

England's "best" player/poster boy is Rooney and the media talk him up as if he's up there but he's been consistently sh*t for England, and not much better for Utd lately, same with Gerrard really. It's a ballsy move but I just wonder if they two had at least been dropped for a game, would the team play better?

This is what I think needs to be done aswell. Could make it like the US college system where a player signs for a school and is committed to them for x number of years.

It could be done that from 16-20 a player can't move club. This will surely help lower league clubs as talent are forced to stay.

We overhype our youngsters aswell like Barkley Sterling and Shaw for example. Lineker once said Sterling was a special talent i was like really? i dont see it. He is a good young player who relies alot on his speed, i dont see anything in him that i didn't see in Aaron Lennon when he was 19.

Exactly, and I'm not having a go at the players, infact I almost feel for them because I was 19/20 and being called the next big thing, I'd admittedly put in more half-arsed performances and let my rep do the talking.

Not saying that will happen to that extreme but I can't help wonder if some of the young players believe the bollocks.
